0 L L! mwafiv SWL gg IZ' gi Bwddzj Bvj Zzldlfuz. EERE The Star-Spangled Banner Oh, say, can you see, by the dazc'n's early light, hffhai so proudly we hailed at the t-zUilight's last gleaming? PV hose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say, does that star-spangled banner yet 'wave O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave? On the shore dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep, hlfhere the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes. hlfhat is that whieh the breeze o'er the towering sappy, ds it fitfully blows, half-conceals, half-discloses? Nou' it catehes the gleam, of the 1norning's hrst beam, In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream. 'Tis the star-spangled banner, oh, long may it zvave 0'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave. Oh, thus, be it ever when freemen shall stand Between their loved homes and zcild zUar's desolation, Blest with vicfry and peace, may the H eav'n-rescued land , Praise the power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer tee must, when our cause it is just, flnd this be our motto: In God is our trust! And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave 0'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave. Smith In appreciation of his genial personality . . . his leadership . . . his sportsmanship . . . and faithfulness . . . the Senior Class of 1943 fondly dedicates this annual. Foreword O Say Can You See . . . the theme of this annual reflects the patriotic spirit of the students of William Fleming High School. The appropriateness of the theme is evi- denced in the everyday activities of the various clubs whose purposes are centered around cooperation in the war effort. Memories of Graduation Night hlfhen the last hours 1'11111e to an ending, 1171111 'walled 11011111 that glorious aisle, There 1711111e a feeling zvitlzin 111e That l l.'Ollll17I0l C071!f!?Ill1l'ifll !lSlI1llL'. llily thoaghlx flashed back to lhe first year Hfhen amhifion, loomed big and bright. As 1 zealhed down the aisle to the rostrum- hlfas my goal now entirely in sight? I stood there Zhinhing so deeply. Then the speaker read out my name. As I walked back with my diploma I thought, Pye are still far from fame. A curlain seemed drawn from the future And a vision of our Task was revealed. ZONIE KAYLOR This year's senior class is outstanding in that it is a mixture of students caught in between the four and five-year system and students from other schools. In fact, there are very few seniors who have been here all the four years. Consequently, this is the first year that we have worked together as an organized class, although last year the so-called junior class sponsored a carnival and gave the traditional junior-senior prom. This year the seniors were very active in publishing the annual, presenting the senior play and preparing for commencement exercises. Then the day most yearned for approached and we found ourselves somehow not quite so eager to take the big step into life. Yet, out we go to face the world which offers such a challenge. And another senior class joins the march to the future. Only twice have our girls played away from home, both times against William Byrd in Vinton. Throughout the entire season the girls have shown ability to cooperate and good sportsmanship. Both of these qualities are excellent training for life. Eunice Doyle, an excellent guard, is the only senior on the team and the only player we expect to lose this year. Eunice has probably been the most consistent player on the team this year-always alert, always playing a good, clean game, and always a good sport. High scorer for the year, with 85 points, was Lucille Boone, who always plays a good game. Helen Hickman, a newcomer this year, has proved herself an excellent player, and will very prob- ably prove an even more useful team member next year. She was second high scorer, with 53 points. Aileen Secrist has also been a strong member of the team. These three forwards have all worked hard and deserve much credit. Two guards, Anna May Gay and Betty Jean Reynolds, have also played excellent ball. 1467 And the Rockets' Red Glare A S. C. A. Hmm Bltucn . . .... Presidmzt JOAN Goooe . . . ...... What better experience could one get in high school than the experience gained through working on the school newspaper? A reporter on a big high school weekly definitely must have the same traits as a foreign cor- respondent- f1 Nose for Names. Through writing for a school newspaper, the reporter-to-be can also develop his own personal writing technique, which is the most forceful quality of a writer. The Colonel this year has put out an issue every week with the exception of mid-term exam week and rationing week.
