THE CLASS OF 1974 TOLMAN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND PRESENTS THE REDJACKET Volume XUV PROLOGUE In the fall of 1971 we entered Tolman as scared, but eager Sophomores. We were scared of the new people, but eager to acquaint ourselves. We were scared of the new environment, but eager to learn. We were scared of our future, but eager to conquer it. Now we have made our friends, we have grown to love our school, and have decided our futures. However, we are still scared and eager. Scared that we will not succeed, but eager to try our new way of life. They experienced a 3-4 record in the Class A Small Division and an overall 5-5 record. They were plagued by mental mistakes and bad breaks most of the sea- son. The team started impressively by defeating Pawtucket West. The following two weeks Tolman lost to Cranston West on a freak play and to Rogers on one bad break. Next the Tigers soundly whipped No. Kingstown for their second victory. This was followed by losses to Woonsocket, a heart- breaker to Cumberland, and to West Warwick. The Tigers then warmed up for Thanksgiving Day with two impressive victories over Coventry and Mt. Pleasant. Tolman’s second season” was a success for the tenth year in a row as they soundly defeated St. Raphael on Thanksgiving Day. All State Honors were extended to Pete Rankowitz as offensive end. Paul Kazarian was honored on the 2nd team as offensive guard. On the All Class A team, Pete Rankowitz and Paul Kazarian made first team and Andy Asermelly sec- ond team. All-Valley selections were Gary Alix, Bemie Smith, ndy Asermelly, Paul Kazarian and Pete Rankowitz. Kazarian! You’re going the wrong way 153 155 Look out! I’m coming through. CROSS-COUNTRY Our Cross-Country team completed its league season with 6 win — 2 loss record in the Central Division. This was good for 3rd place. Capt. elect Rich Katkowski won 7 out of 8 league races and attained 2nd Team All-State and 2nd Team All Class A. Fine performances were turned in by Capt. Joe Barata, Gary Rogala and Ken MacTavish in battling for the second spot on the team. Don Kelly was the 5th man and Bill Salhany and Bruce Murtha rounded out the team. BASKETBALL The 1973-74 Tolman basketball team had a highly successful cam- paign. They posted a 14-7 seasonal record and in league play had a 10-6 record which tied them for the final playoff position in the Metropoli- tan II Division. Tolman started the season with five victories — two of them being league games. They then lost their first game in the Blackstone Valley Christmas Tournament. They then lost three league games on the road before rebounding with a home victory. They lost three of their next four games with the victory being the only homecourt advantage of the four. The team now turned around an apparent dismal season into a suc- cessful season with seven victories in a row, tying them with Rogers for the final playoff position. In a special playoff game, Tolman defeated Rogers 85-75. This victory enabled Tolman to play Central in the first round of the playoffs. In Tolman’s fine season, the team was led by seniors Pete Rankowitz, Co-Captains Tom Michalczyk and Kenny Dickey. The juniors leading the team were Doug Clary, Joe Dragon, Mike Paine, Mike Rankowitz, and Ray Boisse. C’mon Teddy, sit still!” What’s new?” Bunking again?” 207 EPILOGUE It’s hard to believe that we’ve been here three years. Years during which we learned how to love, how to think, how to listen, and how to care. We also learned failure and success, happiness and misery. Now our lives enter another stage. We must continue to grow so we may love more and think more; and when we have mastered these arts, then we will be whole people capable of understanding. . . . Lois Josephs
