The tragic event of Friday last will live in the hearts of Americans as an act of infamy parallelled only by the similar fate of another great President nearly a century ago. While he lived John Fitzgerald Kennedy was truly a man of the people. His medicare for the aged showed his care for America’s senior citizens; his civil rights bill demonstrated his conviction that all men are equal; his earnest desire for world peace manifested his steadfast concern for all mankind. As long as men have intelligence to distinguish between right and wrong, good and bad, President Kennedy will be remembered as a martyr of peace and a symbol of freedom. His short but fruitful life may be summed up in a phrase — service to his country. Surely then, we young citizens have a right to lament and grieve the passing of a great leader and a great man. But would Mr. Kennedy want it this way if he lived today, or would he rather wish that we rededicate ourselves to the task before us? I believe that he would choose the latter. Therefore, let us, today’s youth and tomorrow’s leaders, prepare ourselves to the very best of our abilities for the world ahead. Let us dedicate ourselves to the principles which he firmly believed in and sacrificed so much for. Finally, let us earnestly strive to lead this country to new heights, to greater achievements, and above all to a world of peace — as he would have it. 2 By Robert Condap
