THE REDJACKET Published in 1964 by THE SENIOR CLASS of TOLMAN HIGH SCHOOL Pawtucket, Rhode Island The tragic event of Friday last will live in the hearts of Americans as an act of infamy parallelled only by the similar fate of another great President nearly a century ago. While he lived John Fitzgerald Kennedy was truly a man of the people. His medicare for the aged showed his care for America’s senior citizens; his civil rights bill demonstrated his conviction that all men are equal; his earnest desire for world peace manifested his steadfast concern for all mankind. As long as men have intelligence to distinguish between right and wrong, good and bad, President Kennedy will be remembered as a martyr of peace and a symbol of freedom. His short but fruitful life may be summed up in a phrase — service to his country. Surely then, we young citizens have a right to lament and grieve the passing of a great leader and a great man. But would Mr. Kennedy want it this way if he lived today, or would he rather wish that we rededicate ourselves to the task before us? I believe that he would choose the latter. Therefore, let us, today’s youth and tomorrow’s leaders, prepare ourselves to the very best of our abilities for the world ahead. Let us dedicate ourselves to the principles which he firmly believed in and sacrificed so much for. Finally, let us earnestly strive to lead this country to new heights, to greater achievements, and above all to a world of peace — as he would have it. 2 By Robert Condap May 29, 1917 — November 22, 1963 . . Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country ...” 3 IN MEMORIAM JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY 35th President of the United States TABLE OF CONTENTS Page Senior Class Officers 9 Senior Graduates 10- 71 Superlatives 74- 79 Jr. Prom - Class of ’64 80- 87 Splash Party 88- 89 Honor Awards 92- 98 Faculty 99 - 121 Activities 125 - 134 Sports 135 - 161 Underclassmen 162 - 169 Senior Candids 170- 178 Advertising 179 - 200 4 DEDICATION MR. EDWARD B. McCONNON As senior guidance counselor and basketball coach of Tolman High School, Mr. Edward B. McConnon has attained great admiration and respect from the entire student body. He has always found time to listen to our problems and offer us advice and assistance. As we bid adieu to our high school years, we also bid a sad farewell to a man whose wisdom is surpassed only by his kindness. To Mr. Edward B. McConnon, we, the Class of 1964, respectfully and appreciatively dedicate our yearbook; and we hope that in future years, he will remember us fondly, as we will always remember him. 5 MR. JAMES P. McGEOUGH Principal The Class of 1964 extends a sincere thank you to a man who deserves our appreciation and gratitude, our principal, Mr. James P. McGeough. During our stay at Tolman, he has unselfishly given of his time, setting before us responsibilities to ourselves and to the school, lecturing us when needed, and giving credit where credit was due. We shall always remember this gentleman, who, despite his exacting task, performed his duty in an amiable and conscientious manner. A D M I N I S T R A T I 6 We, the Class of 1964, feel that many of our achievements are the result of the kind aid so generously given by Mr. Cornelius F. McKeough. Because he expressed deep concern for our failures and encouraged interest in our successes, we are grateful to him. Chairman of the committee was Karen Maziarz and faculty advisor was Mr. Ray- mond J. Bedard. Officers: Josephine Brisson, Secretary; Thomas Labonte. Treasurer; Karen Maziarz, Chairman. SENIOR RECEPTION COMMITTEE Our Sr. Reception Committee. The Senior Reception was held on May 1, 1964, at the King Philip Ballroom in Wrentham, Massachusetts. Much careful planning was necessary to make this big event the success that it was. In December, class president Thomas Hashway organized a Senior Reception Com- mittee, and its members selected Mr. Demetropoulis as advisor. JUNIOR PROM On a cool spring evening, the juniors of Tol- man donned their evening apparel to attend the long awaited Junior Prom at the King Phillip Ballroom. The Junior Prom Committee arranged to have the Jesse Stuart Orchestra provide enter- tainment for the gala occasion. The crowning of the queen, Ruth Polednik, with the presentation of her court, Geraldine Provost, Lynn Pannone, Gail Campbell, and Nancy Walsh, was the culmination of a splendid evening. Hey, it's a wig! 84 The loviest of the lovely. Ten cents a dance. Boy, what a wild party. Please, Ed, I’d rather do it myself. Ladies’ choice. Look at those legs! Gladiators locked in combat. SPLASH PARTY In compensation to the members of the Junior class who dined at- the Holiday Inn after the Junior Prom, a splash party was given free of charge by the management of the Inn. Food, music of a combo, and a day of great pleasure and excitement were provided on three different occasions in order to permit everyone to enjoy an unforgetable day. This was the first time all year that swimming and sun bathing were undertaken by most of the Inn’s guests. Weary and tired, all left the Inn at sundown retaining the memories of a day not to be forgotten. 88 Boys will be boys. The cokes are on the house. 89 Jack Coppolino Photography Ed. NANCY FINEGAN THANKSGIVING DAY PROCLAMATION AWARD WINNER Last fall, Tolman's Thanksgiving Day proclama- tion contest was won by Carol Duffell. Winning this gave her the opportunity to participate in the statewide contest. Although she did not become a finalist, Carol certainly deserves credit for her fine work. An honor student, Carol finds time to participate in several extracurricular activities. This list includes: chemistry club, the newspaper and yearbook staffs, and student council. Elected secretary of the junior class last year, she is popular among her classmates. The friendly disposition and great ambition of Carol will certainly spark her to greater achievements in the years to come. CAROL DUFFELL D. A. R. AWARDS Karen Maziarz and Robert Condap were singled out by their classmates and teachers to receive the good citizenship award presented annually by the Flintlock and Powder Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, for outstanding citizenship, leadership, service, and scholastic achievement. Both of these students truly deserved this honor which was bestowed upon them not only because of their numerous scholastic and extra-curricular accom- plishments but also because of their pleasing person- alities and their dependability. 93 KAREN MAZIARZ and ROBERT CONDAP RHODE ISLAND HONOR SOCIETY Row 1 (I. to r.)—Constance Creclman, Donna Gazebien, Jeanne arufel, Norma Duquette, Patricia c ole, Jacqueline Dubeau, Elaine Alberti, Karen Cloutier, Nancy Blanchette. COLLEGE SEMINARS Six days of school a week may seem superfluous to some; however, to a special group of Tolman students it means devoting Saturdays to intellectual pursuits. These students traveled to Providence College and the University of Rhode Island to attend the College Seminars. The courses ranged from engineering to oceanography. It is impossible to delve deeply into the material which was offered, but the knowledge gained from this endeavor will prove to be of great value in later life. 15th ANNUAL EMPLOYMENT of the HANDICAPPED CONTEST The winner of this contest for the year 1963 was Phyllis Kaczynski. Phyllis's sin- cerity, quiet ways, and diligence are appreci- ated by all who know her. We wish her con- tinued success in all her future endeavors. Phyllis Kaczynski BETTY CROCKER AWARD VOICE OF DEMOCRACY AWARD The Voice of Democracy contest winner this year was Ina Sack. Winning essay contests is nothing new for Ina whose essays, selected be- cause of their novel and forthright approach, have made her finalist for two consecutive years. Ina, who was voted Best Scholar” by her classmates this year, is certain to enjoy many future successes. Ina Sack Karen Maziarz is this year's winner of the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow contest. She received this award when she achieved the highest score in a written test. On Class Day Karen was presented a pin to acknowledge her accomplishment. As president of the Dramatics Society, secre- tary of the Chemistry Club, an editor of the Hi- Light and the Redjacket, and an all A” student, she has been an active member of the Tolman student body. Good luck to our Homemaker of Tomorrow. Karen Maziarz MERIT SCHOLARSHIP AWARD Karen Maziarz, Thomas Germani, Carol Duffell, and Dorothy Brown have received Merit Letters from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. These students took the Merit Boards last May and the score received placed them among the top 2% of the nation. They are now eligible for consideration of special scholarships by colleges and private organi- zations. One factor that determines the selection of a National Merit Scholar is the ability of the student to show creative promise, whether in artistic, literary, scientific, or other fields. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation is a nonprofit organization which was established for the benefit of helping the gifted student. It is made up of various committees, each assigned to a different task. One committee eliminates those tests which have flaws and another looks into the background of the student. Although anyone may take these tests, only those few with outstanding ability will qualify. Tolman is certainly proud to have among them four such talented students. SCIENCE SEMINAR During the summer of 1963, Eric Marks was one of fourteen participants chosen to attend the National Science Foundation Summer Biological Institute at the University of Rhode Island. This program extended from July 1 through August 9. The graduates of the program were awarded certificates and letters of recommendation from the University of Rhode Island. Eric was required to attend two four-hour seminars a week and was assigned to the animal pathology lab- oratory and the bacteriology section. His program was divided between classes and individual research in tissue culture. He also was a participant in a research project conducted by the University dealing with New- castle disease and worked with four types of viruses — one of which is believed to be a source of cancer. Eric S. Marks JUNIOR QUOTARIANS The Junior Quotarians of Tolman Senior High School, Karen Maziarz and Patricia Cole, were afforded the opportunity to display their leadership abilities at the meeting scheduled by the Quota Club of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. For this invaluable experience and honor, the girls wish to express their sincere appreciation to the Quota Club. Karen Maziarz and Patricia Cole JUNIOR ROTARIANS This year's Junior Rotarians, Frank Geisel- man and Robert Condap, were feted at Rotary Club meetings, at which they met the outstanding businessmen of the city. The advice and counsel of the civic leaders were of great value and sincerely appreciated. The Junior Rotarians were made to feel at ease by the amiable and congenial atmosphere; and upon leaving the hall for the last time, hoped that someday they would again be welcomed at a Rotary Club dinner. Frank Geiselman and Robert Condap VC t, as seniors, wish to express a sincere Thank You to our devoted teachers who have made our three years at Tolman most enjoyable and rewarding. Miss Julienne Lesieur, English Mr. Edward B. McConnon, English ENGLISH In order to succeed in other subjects and in later life, it is necessary to have a basic concept of our native language. Therefore, the English Department is an important part of the school, for, without it, many students would lack the ability to read, write, and speak correctly. An English course consists of two primary areas of concentration, rhetoric and literature. A study of both facilitates communication greatly. Also, through their perusal of literature, many students imbibe information which aids in other subjects and are incited to read more. Our excellent English Department, which leads many on the road to success, certainly creates an atmosphere of security and pride within the walls of Tolman High School. Mr. John L. Next year Tolman High School will greatly miss the smiling, pleasant scholar who brought us a little bit of Italy.” DR. MARIO MANCUSO Mr. William Histen is presently a Ful- bright Exchange teacher in Modena, Italy. He is a graduate of Boston Latin School and Holy Cross where he starred both as an athlete and Latin scholar. He received All-Ameri- can mention in football while playing at the Cross” and was All-Massachusetts” while at Boston Latin. Bill is a teacher, scholar, and family man. His patent abilities are reflected by his selec- tion as a Fulbright Exchange teacher to Italy where he is presently learning Italian and Italian methods of teaching Latin. He has realized a life-long ambition to visit and explore the ruins of Roman cities where he expects to study the ancient lore in the original locale. His experience and learn- ing will give a new feeling, scope, and enrichment to the future Latin classes at Tolman. 102 MR. WILLIAM J. HISTEN Mr. Gerard M. Thomas McQuaid. Again this year, Mr. Tierney conducted classes in the study of the German language. Dr. B. W. Leoni and Messrs. J. Thomas McQuaid and Gerald Baribeault patiently guided the students in making French less confusing. Misses T. Christine McCaughey, Eunice T. Farrell, Chemistry JOURNALISM In the capable and experienced hands of Mrs. Lillian McCullough, journalism has flourished at Tolman; and a crop of skilled writers has emerged. Her pupils are instructed in the art of writing by aiding the newspaper copy staffs of the Hi- Light. Through Mrs. McCullough’s instruction, a flock of young writers undoubtedly more capable of deal- ing with the realm of journalism, will meet the high standards of writing today. Mrs. Lillian F. McCullough, Journalism HOME ECONOMICS Scavengers, cubes, pipes, and cut-outs are terms unfamiliar to most girls at Tolman High School; however, stay- stitching, dart, tuck, slip-stitch, and facing would be just as unfamiliar to the boys. In rooms 406 and 407 the girls of Tolman are shown how to become future homemakers of tomorrow. Clothing, social adjustment, home management, and home nursing prepare our girls of today for their position as women of tomorrow. Acting as mothers to each and every girl, Miss Mangan and Miss McCabe give each of them the knowl- edge that will play such a valuable part in later years. I'll never finish it on time. 18 Miss Dorothy L. Mangan, Clothing, Home Management, Home Nursing Please, we’re not done yet! Ah, finished at last. I hope it fits. Mr. Frederick J. Warburton, Mechanical Drawing MECHANICAL DRAWING T-square, erasing shield, architectural template, beam compass, and lettering guides are just a few of the terms that would confuse most of us, but not the boys of Mr. Warburton’s mechanical drawing class. To prepare themselves for drafting, blue-printing, contracting, and many other careers, the boys of Tolman High School have taken advantage of the three year course offered to them in mechanical drawing. DRIVER EDUCATION The driver education program at Tolman High School trains students in the essential rules of safety on the road, and prepares the student to receive his driving permit. Directed by Mr. Louis Najjar, safe driving is of vital importance today when so many accidents, that might have been prevented, occur. 120 Mr. Louis J. Najjar, Driver Education Don't be so newsy. It’s beautiful! What is it? Engrossed in her work. What a mess! ART The art students, under the supervision of Misses Dorothy Johnson and Irene Larson, are responsible for the creative displays exhibited on the fourth floor, on the bulletin boards throughout the school, and on the main floor for all visitors to admire. Miss Irene Larson, Commercial Art The Tolman Chorus. Our accompanists. ; CHORUS-BAND Any music, no matter how great, is only as good as the artists who interpret it. The Chorus is fortunately favored with the competent guidance of Mr. Edward E. Ludwig, under whose capable and skillful direction the organization has gained prestige. Musical enthusiasm was shown this year by the band in dis- playing an infectious spirit on the football field and in the stands. Mr. Ludwig’s rhythmic arrangements and fine leadership were greatly appreciated by all. ONE and a TWO and a . . . . 122 Oh, those mello tones! They sing like the angels they are. What page arc we on? And the band played on. Go, man, go! Yeah, yeah, yeah! Sing along with Mitch. Mr. Arthur J. Nooney, Physical Education Mr. Alexander F. Nahigian, Physical Education Mr. Anthony G. Pariseau, Athletic Director PHYSICAL EDUCATION Every high school student should participate in some type of athletic activity. Football, basketball, cross-country, tennis, track, badminton, and baseball, all offered at Tolman, provide ample opportunities for both enjoyment and the improvement of physical fitness. The Tolman Leaders assist gymnastic teachers in athletic activities by acting as scorekeepers, team captains, and time- keepers. All students should take advantage of the excellent physical education program at Tolman. OFFICE STAFF When aid is required by the new and insecure as well as the experi- enced and troubled student, the office staff at Tolman has always been known to lend a helping hand. With their help Tolman has functioned competently and efficiently. Mrs. Julia M. Graveline, Clerk And it was s-o-o-o good!!! Cafeteria staff: Alice Bisordi, Erna Mowry, Clarisse McCaughey, Mary Melia, Ada McCulloch, Isabella Rivers, Veronica Powers, Lillian Foley. CUSTODIANS and CAFETERIA STAFF Versatility is the extremely important trait which each of our cooks and custodians required this year. The duties of the custodians included many things such as general cleaning, yard work, repairs, laundry, setting up props for stage plays, and constituting the clean-up detail for every student function held at Tolman High School. The attractiveness of our building and surround- ings depend entirely upon the work of the custodians, while the cooks were given the never-ceasing job of feeding the hungry student body. Our Student Council is a long-established and well- organized institution at Tolman High School. It is affiliated with the National Student Council and is a member of the Rhode Island State Confederation of Student Councils. The fact that the Rhode Island Convention of Student Councils has been held here twice offers proof that our group is recognized by other schools. Again this year, this conscientious organization, com- posed of outstanding members of the sophomore, junior, and senior classes, was active in promoting for the smoother running of the school. The Pep Squad continued to incite school spirit at games. The Christmas tree in the main corridor, an annual sight, was again decorated by the members of the Student Council. Another annual event, Twirp Day, was held in April. The club sponsored the Twirp Hop, to which the girls invited the boys and made arrangements for transportation. The group also ushered on Honors Day and furnished refreshments for the adults afterward. This organization, under the very capable supervision of Miss Mary Goodwin, tried to be of the utmost service to Tolman High this year as it does every year. 128 CHEMISTRY CLUB (Monday’s Group): Row 1 (1. to r.)—J. Among their tasks are: stamping, putting away books, showing students around, typing, and, whenever possible, helping the librarian, Miss Irene D. Carlin. When new books arrive, typing of the catalogue cards, pockets, and check-out cards, filing, and stamping of the books in preparation for circula- tion day must be accomplished. These are but a few of the many services for which we are thankful to the members of the Tolman Library Club. David. FRENCH CLUB The French Club of Tolman High, under the super- vision of Mr. J. Thomas McQuaid, has the following officers for its 1963-1964 season: George I.ozy, Presi- dent; Albert Casavant, Vice-President; Elaine Ganczar, Secretary; James Hall, Treasurer. The members of this energetic club assembled every morning at 8:00 in room 106. The students worked seriously at perfecting pronunciation with the help of records and tapes, thus learning to train their ears to the recognition of the spoken word. All benefited greatly from this activity. FRENCH CLUB, Row 1 (1. to r.) - Elaine Ganczar, Secretary; George Lozy, President; Albert Casavant, Vice-Presi- dent; James Hall, Treasurer. The team was neither the most outstanding nor the most powerful team in the league, but it showed an inclination for hustle and a determination to win. Although the Tigers played tremendous football in all of their games, they were frequently edged out of victory — many times in the closing minutes of the game by teams with far superior reserve strength. In this sport the emphasis is centered upon the individual competitor rather than upon a team. A competent team is necessary to win, but, unlike baseball, football, and hockey, the points are awarded individually. It is also an exacting sport, requiring stamina, good coordina- tion, and the ability to pace oneself. They didn't eat their Wheaties! 142 Me and my shadow. Tigers on the prowl. TRACK TEAM Although our track team did not secure the City Meet, it did apply excellent competitive spirit. The score of the meet was tied between St. Raphael and Tolman until the final event, the high jump. During the ensuing battle, the Saints gradually gained advantage of the Tigers and also captured the City Title. Consider- ing the vigorous competition which the league offered and the injuries suffered by a few ruunners, our team accounted for itself admirably. This year, under the leadership of their elected captain, Jim Ferguson, the team surpassed the achievements of the past. In addition. BASEBALL TEAM Last year’s baseball team was expected to be a strong contender for the state championship; however, several unfortunate circumstances prevented this. We began well by winning the first three games but then were practically forced out of contention by the loss of five straight. Our five later wins helped the team to finish in third place behind Barrington and Rogers. Two players were outstanding enough to secure places on the All-Blackstone Valley Team. They were Jack Coppolino, a dependable third baseman, who led the team with a .429 batting average, and Eddie DaCruz, a fine-fielding first baseman. Also, Jerry Alix sparkled in relief performances. The return of these boys and several others signifies that Tolman should be a definite title threat again this year.
