FARRELL We, the Class of 1962, respectfully dedicate our yearbook to Mr. John L. Farrell and Mr. Raymond J. Farrell, Tolman’s devoted chemistry teachers. Those students who were fortunate enough to have studied under the direction of the Messrs. Farrells realize the time and effort these teachers have unselfishly given, assisting in laboratory experiments after school hours. Their untiring patience and helpfulness in the classroom have greatly benefited us in this scientific world, and we wish them a very successful and rewarding future. 3 THE PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE Dear Class, You have now completed twelve years of formal education. These years have been spent primarily and essentially in developing your mind, your soul, and your body. Now you go forth from us at Tolman High to start carving your niche in this world. As you go, I urge you not to stop the development of' these three above mentioned. It is going to mean work — it is going to mean sacrifice; but without work and sacrifice you are not going to be the man or woman you had hoped to be. You are not going to be the leader in whatever field you may choose to enter. For some time now I have been talking to you about the qualities of leadership. I told you that the only person who can start you on the road to leadership is yourself. No one else can do this for you. At Delphi, in Greece, stands a 2,500 year old temple to Apollo. Inscribed in the marble of that temple are two words that hold a deep meaning for every potential leader of today. Those two words are Know Thyself. This requires that you look deeply into yourself to discover your hidden assets and liabilities, and that you develop those qualities of true leadership which are essential for any person who wants to exert an influence for good. You have to be prepared to live up to parental, religious, and social obligations when there is a strong temptation to neglect or evade them. I don’t have to tell you that these are very uncertain and dangerous days in which we are living. The newspaper and magazine headlines, television and radio commentators all try to impress us with the uncertainty of what the future holds. Spaceships, moon rockets, astronauts, launching pads, countdowns, atomic power, fall-out shelters, megaton bombs — all these are brand-new words in our common vocabulary in just the past few years and each calls for a new type of leadership. That leadership is in the hands of youth. In your hands, you have to take the initiative and discover for yourself just what role you are going to play on the stage of life in this new scientific age. Once you have a deep sense of the need for each individual to take the lead in his own work, club, school or in the social and civic life of the community, and the important contribution that one person, such as yourself can make, you will be most likely to move yourself and to stimulate others to do the same. The leadership of the world starts with you as much as it does with anyone. I know that in the Class of 1962 of Tolman High we have many potential future leaders. We, of the administration and the faculty, have the highest regard and esteem for all the members of the class. You have earned that high regard by your untiring efforts and co-operation. As you leave us now my parting words are good luck, good health, and God be with you. Sincerely, JAMES P. McGEOUGH Principal 4 MR. JAMES P. McGEOUGH Principal MR. CORNELIUS F. To attain membership in this society, students must compile an average grade of 85% or better in their three years of high school. The outstanding purpose of the Honor Society is to encourage the development of high scholarship, strong spirit of service, helpful leadership, and worthy character in the students of Rhode Island high schools. At the May Honors Day Assembly, these students were presented pins and certificates in recognition of their high scholastic achievement. Gayle Landers and Jay Kerzner were selected to partake in a full-year program at Providence College. In her English class, Gayle studied the style and mood of some modern American authors. Jay specialized in advanced mathematics. The seminars at the University of Rhode Island were divided into two half-year sessions. Courses were offered D. A. R. AWARDS Christine A. Mills and Joseph G. Glynn were chosen by their fellow classmates and faculty to be the recipients of the 25th annual presentation of the medal of the Paw- tucket Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. Christine has been an active member in Tolman activi- ties. In addition to being Junior Class treasurer and secre- tary of the Senior Class, Christine has been a Student Council member for three years. She participated in cheerleading. Dramatics Society, German Club, secretary of the Chemistry Club, president of the Delta Tri-H-Y, and Sports Editor of the Redjacket. A Student Council member for three years, president of his Sophomore Class, high-ranking scholar, Joseph Glynn is one of the best-liked seniors at Tolman. Always a leader, Joseph has been active in dance committees, French Workshop, Redjacket, and is president of the Chemistry Club. Christine and Joseph truly deserve this high honor bestowed on them. The Class of '62 offers congratulations and hopes of happiness and success to both of them. Christine Mills, Joseph Glynn Row 1 (left to right) — K. Cloutier, G. Landers, B. Buckbee, B. ACTIVITIES THE DRAMATICS SOCIETY This year the Tolman Dramatics Society, under the guidance of Mr. James E. Gilligan acquired many new and active members. These members along with our veterans of the past made this group one of the largest in many years. At the first meeting of the Society, early in the fall, officers were elected. They were: Jay Kerzner, presi- dent; Barbara Baffrey, vice-president; Barbara Meals, secretary; and Judith Stonely, treasurer. At this same meeting of Juniors and Seniors it was decided to hold our annual Booster Day, from which we gained funds to begin the work on our first play. The play selected to open the season was Once in Every Family,” a comedy in three acts which was hailed as one of the all time greats in comedy at Tolman. The frustration of Ronald Burnham, the domineerance of Barbara Baffrey, the stateliness of Patricia Staffos, and the all around comedy of Raymond Watts, William Wells, Daniel Budz and Barbara Meals delighted the large audience which attended. The fine performances of Patricia Cole, a most talented sophomore; Mary Zuba; Sheila Woodworth; Holly Johnson; and the remainder of the cast also added tremendously to the experience of the seniors. The second program by the Society was an origi- nal musical presented by talented members of the student body. It consisted of several acts which were set into a script written by Gayle Landers, chairman; the officers; and a small group of Dramatics members. As usual, the musical brought in a fine audience, mak- ing this effort a huge success. The Senior play, consisting mainly of Senior mem- bers of the Dramatics Society also ended in success, supported largely by sentimental upperclassmen and past graduates. As a last meeting for the graduating members and others of the organization, the annual picnic was held, bringing to a close a most wonderful and enjoyable year in the Dramatics Society of Tolman High School. 92 Watch the expert”. Students backed warily from the laboratory table as a white cloud rose to the ceiling. While chemicals splattered over the floor, instructors Messrs. Raymond J. Farrell and John L. Farrell glanced at each other with sympa- thetic eyes. Another meeting of the Chemistry Club had begun. The two patient Farrells had many similar ex- periences to endure. Fifty-six members met either on Monday or Friday afternoons 2:30 to 5:00 P.M. each week to perform experiments supplementing classwork, or advanced work requiring a written paper such as Heating Metallic Oxides or Equivalent Weights of Metals. At occasional business meetings the club organized its formal affairs. Officers elected were: Joseph Glynn, president; Marsha Soar, vice-president; Christine Mills, secretary; Virginia Green, treasurer. To raise funds for pins for each member and other expenses, a transistor radio was raffled off in a school-wide drive. Through the school year, the Chemistry Club has aided members to complete additional experiments and to help non-members in class. The members are greatful for this opportunity to extend their knowl- edge. To the members next year, we can only say, Be careful with the test tubes! STUDENT COUNCIL In 1959, the Student Council was led by Miss McBurney, who is now at West High School. The Student Council constitution was developed that year, and future money-making ideas were planned. In I960, Mr. Melucci whipped the group into great shape. School standards were set for Student Council members, and the attendance at meetings rose sharply. Among its many projects were a raffle, a dance, and the purchasing of pins for Student Coun- cil members. Near the end of the year, the organiza- tion also bought a set of books for the school library. The R. I. State Student Council Convention was held at Tolman in I960, and our two candidates for state office, Joseph Glynn and Alan B. Matook, nar- rowly lost in their political attempts. The convention was a great success though, and refreshments were served to the delegates from all of the high schools represented. This year, Miss Mary Goodwin was appointed as our Student Council advisor. At the first meeting, the officers elected were as follows: President, Alan B. Matook; Vice-President, Adrian Knott; Secretary, Christine Cudak; Treasurer, Mary-Jane Bedard. Again, as in past years, the Student Council was responsible for the impressive Christmas tree in the middle of the first floor corridor. After mid-year exams, plans were immediately begun for the annual Twirp Hop that was held in April. This hop was enthusiastically received by everyone, especially the boys, who were treated like kings. Following the April assembly, which honored the new members of the Rhode Island Honor Society, a tea was sponsored by the Student Council in the school cafeteria for the new members and their parents. 95 FRENCH WORKSHOP Row 1 (left to right) — R. Its purpose is to improve the students’ scholarly attitude and habits of study, and to increase their knowledge of French. These endeavors are in the direction of honest, personal effort, for the high purpose of acquiring a greater sense of order because, I’ordre est la pre- miere loi de l’univers.” We strive to learn that a profound respect for the eternal principles of justice, human dignity, and kindness in human relations is the first and foremost requisite of a truly educated” per- son. Wallace again served as faculty advisor and super- vised staff members in producing a fine paper. This year’s staff included Pamela Chevalier and Marilyn Glassman, co-editors; Carolyn Wrona, Dianne Griffin, Diane Giguere and Robert Cochrane, assis- tants to the editors; and a full staff of reporters, fea- ture writers, and two very able photographers, Philip Golembicki and Barbara Buckbee. The first issue of the Hi-Light was published in December and featured the 1962 slate of senior class superlatives. The second issue, published in March, introduces several new features. Among these were, You Know Them By,” and The Sports Lite. Two other issues were produced before the school ended in June. The staff of the Hi-Light wishes to thank everyone who assisted in helping them through another success- ful year, and they eagerly hope everyone enjoyed these MR. WILLIAM J. DER DEUTSCHE VEREIN RADIO CLUB The German Club, or Der Deutsche Verein as it is known by its members, is directed by Thomas Tierney. The student officers elected were: Arthur Davey, President; Alan Dzija, Vice-President; Alan MacQueen, Secretary. Getting underway at the beginning of the first meeting, the German Club undertook the responsi- bility of writing a constitution and a set of by-laws. A field trip to the Rhode Island School of Design, colored slides of Germany, recordings and group dis- cussions in German have enabled all members to glean a better understanding of German life. The William E. Tolman Amateur Radio Club was formed in 1960 and since that time its members have tried to put a radio station on the air. Although there is a shortage of equipment this year, the organi- zation was able to install an antenna and communi- cate with local hams. The club's call, K1QDI, is planned to be used a great deal in the near future, for although equipment is low, amateur spirit is high among the members. Expressions of sincere thanks must be given to Mr. Michael Kenny and Mr. Gregory Coughlin, who guided the club in all its efforts and did much to create the amateur spirit in its members. FRENCH CLUB LIBRARY CLUB La repetition est le secret de i'acquistion is an old French proverb often heard ringing through the corridors early every school morning. The sound originates from home room 106, where Mr. J. T. Mc- Quaid conducts his French Club between 8:00 and 8:20 a.m. Mr. McQuaid aids students interested in acquiring further knowledge of the French language by tutoring them in reading and pronunciation. In these before-school sessions, students learn French idioms which would otherwise be passed by for lack of time in regular classes. With the use of French records and a tape-recorder, Mr. McQuaid points out student faults and teaches steadfast rules. Mr. McQuaid should be commended for his un- tiring devotion to the teaching of students who have a desire for knowledge, and the superior achievements of his former pupils in advanced French courses. The Library Club, under the direction of Miss Irene D. Carlin, is a corps of students who give some of their free time each day to library activities. These include shelving books, arranging book displays, set- ting up projects with the librarian, helping in the filing of cards and pamphlets, and processing periodi- cals and new books for library use. Library pins are awarded on Class Day to juniors and seniors who have completed two years of club service. We wish to express our thanks to our librarian for all the help she has given us during our three years at Tolman. LIBRARY CLUB Row 1 (left to right) — P. Manney, E. Suggs, J. Gaines, P. Ridolfi, J. CHORUS BAND This year it was necessary for Mr. Ludwig to organize two choruses due to the increased enthusiasm — the Senior Chorus and the Sophomore Chorus. The Sophomore Chorus made its first appearance at the Thanksgiving Day Assembly, proving that they would be valuable additions to the next year’s Senior Chorus. The Senior Chorus, composed of juniors and seniors, made its first appearance at a concert given for the P.T.A. in December. The next performance was at the Christmas Assembly where they delighted both faculty and students with a rendition of Handel's Christmas Messiah. This year the combined choruses also strolled down Main Street singing Christmas Carols as well as tra- ditionally singing in front of Pawtucket City Hall. The Spring Concert held in May proved to be successful due to the dilligent preparation of the com- bined choruses. The band, under the direction of Mr. Ludwig, is comprised of approximately 30 members. This year, because of the increase in the size of the band, they had a larger and better selection of music. Because of the variety of music played, the band instilled in the student body a sense of school pride and spirit. The football season was brightened considerably by our band's rousing performances during the games. Also greatly appreciated by the student body were the spirited and highly professional concerts given by the band at assemblies throughout the year, notably those at the Christmas Assembly and the Spring Concert. The importance of the Tolman Band, under the vigorous leadership of Mr. Ludwig, has been growing steadily through the years. Good luck to next year's band. BAND D. Abbott, R. Barlick, G. Braymon, S. At Tolman, it is the cheerleaders who kindle this determination. By inflaming school spirit and enthusiasm into the midst of the spectators at a game, whether it be football or basketball, the cheerleaders guide our team to triumph. Like the players, cheerleaders put much effort into the preparation of each game. After school, they are often found in the gym practicing jumps and learning new cheers for the next game. The cheerleaders, aside from being dedicated to their cheering activities, maintain a high academic record. This is an accomplishment as studying time is not plentiful to these ten spirited girls. The graduating cheerleaders were proud to repre- sent Tolman High during the past two years and wish a coming year of cheering success to the junior cheer- leaders. We would like to thank Miss Furbish, who ex- pertly supervised our activities, and Mr. Nooney for his co-operation in helping to make buses available to us and to the student body. Along with these, the cheerleaders would like to thank all students, parents, and friends who instilled in our team a desire for victory. 104 Mary Jane Bedard Christine Mills Karen Cloutier Sharon Severin 105 Row 1 (left to right) — B. FOOTBALL TEAM Tolman's football team completed the season with a record of four wins and three losses. Although we had a promising team, we lost to Classical by a score of 7-0 and to Deering by a score of 26-21. Tolman's team, who had high hopes of defeating Saint Raphael Academy for the fourth consecutive year, suffered a disappointing loss by a score of 21-0. During the season the ten seniors on the squad rendered services worthy of high acclaim. Co-captain Adrian Knott did an excellent job at end. Our two halfbacks, co-captain Denny Lucier and Ed Addison, displayed considerable skill in carrying the ball. John Marquis and Craig Douglas did a fine job opening many of the holes for our ball carriers. Co-captain John Rigley, the big man on our team, was praised for stopping the advances of the opposition. Bruce Hallworth was a standout in our offensive line. Frank Reis, playing especially well as end, was responsible for some of our touchdowns. The position of fullback was efficiently fulfilled by Jim Rylands. A1 Boucher successfully executed his share of work against our op- position. We wish also to congratulate Rigley, Storin and Lucier for making the Blackstone All Valley Football Team. The work of A1 Palagi, Steve Storin, Tom Knott and Greg Montero was an asset to our team. Because of our outstanding coaches, Gig” and Rollie Pariseau, our team did the best job they could. We shall always admire the understanding of our coaches and the hard play of the Tolman Tiger Foot- ball Team of 1961. Warwick 13 Tolman 20 Mt. BASKETBALL TEAM The Tolman High School Basketball Team has completed another successful season, thereby qualify- ing them for the schoolboy basketball playoffs. This is the third consecutive year that our Tiger team has entered the playoffs by ranking third in the Suburban League. With five wins and two losses in the exhibition game record, our school team had high hopes of bet- tering this mark. After receiving our first loss from East Providence, Tolman easily subdued DeLaSalle Academy and Mt. St. Charles Academy. Our setback by Westerly was avenged by our decisive victories over our city rivals St. Raphael Academy and West High School. At the opening of the second round with a close loss to East Providence, we again posted impression- able victories of DeLaSalle and Mt. St. Charles Aca- demy. The game with Westerly was the best by far. During this upset, our team displayed the best per- formance of the season. We defeated the defending league champions by a 25-point margin. The Tigers then went on by defeating St. Raphael and West High, thus qualifying them in the league playoffs. Vic Ventura and A1 Nixon, co-captains, did a fine job setting the plays in -motion and keeping up the morale of the players. Vic was a consistent scorer from the outside. A1 did his share in working off the backboard. Frank Reis, the hustler and one of the fastest ball handlers on the team, was fabulous on HO quick breaks and drives. Tall Don Suggs was the spark plug of the Tiger team. Suggs, a 6'6 sopho- more, held the team together by getting the majority of the rebounds and by becoming one of the leading scorers in the Suburban League. These four players saw the most action during the league games. The fifth spot was filled by Craig Douglas, Steven Storin, Doug Thomas, and Tom Smile. Other players that saw action during the season were Richard Kali- noski, A1 Palagi, Tony Moniz, Dave Fairweather, and Harold Stallwood. Once again Coach McConnon showed his tre- mendous ability as a leader as he shuffled his players to meet the occasion with great results. We wish Mr. McConnon the best of luck in the coming years. The final record stood at nine wins and nine losses. In one of the most thrilling games of the season, the Junior Varsity Tigers battled the St. Raphael squad right down to the wire, emerging as victors with a three-point margin. In the final game with West High, Pete Giard and Jim Squadrito showed tremen- dous ability; however, the Rangers” defeated our team by the score of 64 to 56. High scorers of the Junior Varsity team with over 100 points during the season were Jim Squad- rito, Pete Giard and G. Gieselman. Other important members of the squad who helped lead our team to victory were J. Coppolino, P. Millette, C. Carter, J. Quinn, W. Janowski, D. Howe, G. Alix, and B. Kosin- ski. We can be proud of the fine showing made this year by the Junior Varsity team and can expect much help from them next year. Our thanks go to Coach Frank Wright for the fine display of sportsmanship that the team showed throughout the year. SCORES Tolman 48 Mt. EASTERN DIVISION CHAMPIONS OF 1961 In 1961 coach Ted McConnon superbly directed the rough Tigers to the city and divisional champion- ships. The dazzling record of Tolman High’s baseball team stands as fourteen wins and no losses in league competition. These accomplishments performed by our team entitled them to enter the playoffs for the state cham- pionship. By defeating North Providence in the quar- ter-finals, the roaring Tigers opposed Deering of West Warwick in a two out of three series. After brilliantly winning the first game, the Tigers were subdued in the remaining two games. Last year's class of 1961 rendered the services of right handed pitcher Mike Smith, slugging first base- man Bob Johnson, shortstop Cliff Noiseux, Bob Laffey and George Quinlan. The class of 1962 played a vital role in the suc- cess of the Tolman team by contributing top players to the squad. They include pitcher Vic Ventura, catcher 114 Bruce Hallworth, third baseman Denny Lucier and the outfielders John Rigley and speedy Ed Addison. Members of the sophomore class who helped our team on the way to the top were Doug Thomas, Buster Mills, Tony Moniz and Walt Sloan. Tolman has reason to be proud of the baseball team of 1961 that won for us high honors throughout the state. The wonderful sportsmanship, the excep- tional ability and the complete cooperation of team and coach made this a mighty splendid team our class will always remember. The senior lettermen who displayed exceptional ability were Bruce Calvert, breaststroke; Richard Haworth, 200- yard freestyle; Alan Mather, 100-yard freestyle; and Jim Cragg, diver. Bruce Calvert, captain and spark plug of the team, holds numerous honors in the breaststroke through- out the state. With the help of juniors. Dean Royer, A1 Lawton and T. McDade, the squad has had a favorable season. Promising sophomores were Leo Cardosi, 100-yard butterfly and R. Whitclaw, backstroke. Thanks go out to Coach Roland J. This year there were four senior teams with eight to twelve girls on a team. The competition was keen and the Koozies” maintained a 5 win-1 loss record; the second place team had a 4 win- 2 loss average; and the third position team had a 3 win-3 loss slate. The senior champs had to play the first place junior team. This team, under the leadership of Linda Bowmer, defeated the seniors by a score of 13-6. The junior champions had to play the sophomore vic- tors to determine who would be the school champions. All girls who played basketball or acted as an official received ten points towards their school letter. Every Tuesday and Thursday after school sophomore junior and senior girls had a chance to show their athletic ability by participating in a fast moving volleyball game. The sophomore team, Flintstones” captained by Ruth Dube emerged as victors. The Gym Dandies , the junior title holders, were led by Maureen Czechandski. The Koo- zies” under the leadership of Pat Haniewich, were the senior champs. The dazzling playoffs began when the Flintstones” de- feated the Gym Dandies . The Flintstones then met and defeated the Koozies by a close score of 21-17. Officials in these games were all girls interested in earning ten points towards their school letter. 120 GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TEAM Row 1 (left to right) — J. Taratuta, P. Haniewich, F. La- reau.
