Warren Principal ,A 7!1fka f,Mf7f21fL Lf: 1-gl PosTscripT Green Age 41889 - 19393 In I939, BryanT Tinds iTselT looking backward and Torward. ln glancing backward over The TiTTy years since The Tounding of BryanT in l889, BryanT Tinds much inspiraTion and hope. ln TacT, The BryanT High School oT Today is an evoluTion oT The Two score and Ten years ThaT have passed. In The early days, The policy of The school aimed To TiT The school To The needs oT The communiTy. Accordingly, you will Tind in The presenT comprehensive high school a general course, an academic course. a commercial course, a mechanic arTs course and all kinds of adiusTmenT courses under one iurisdicTion. A pupil may be guided inTo one oT These Tields oT endeavor and TransTerred Trom one course To anoTher aT any Time during The Term, according To The needs oT The pupil. ln reTrospecT, iT may be well To poinT ouT ThaT The TirsT commercial course in New York CiTy was esTablished in BryanT l-ligh School. The course in sTenography and TypewriTing is hoary wiTh age compared wiTh commercial courses which have been esTablished wiThin The lasT Ten or TiTTeen years in The greaT new palaces oT educaTion now buill' Tor secondary schools. AnoTher course, aT TirsT called Manual Train- ing, and now known as a Mechanic ArTs course. meT The needs of a good many who wished To learn The operaTions and processes in eiTher meTal or in wood. In The meanTime, new laws were enacTed. Pupils are now compelled To remain in high schools beyond The sevenTeenTh year. This change presenTed a challenge To all The high schools of New York CiTy. BryanT l-ligh School has Taced The siTuaTion by es- Tablishing many new courses adapTed To diTTerenT groups. ArT Weav- ing, OTEce PracTice, Salesmanship and AdverTising, lndusTrial Geog- raphy, ModiTied l-lisTory, PracTical AspecTs oT Physics and ChemisTry and l-lome Nursing Tor girls were added. l-lomer expresses This ThoughT in The Iliad: A green old age, unconscious oT decays, ThaT proves The hero, born in beTTer days. BryanT also looks Torward To The TuTure, To The world oT To- morrow. By a coincidence This TuTure will be made noTable by The en- Trance oT BryanT High School inTo The new building aT 3lsT Avenue and 48Th STreeT and by The celebraTion of The World's Fair around our Four 'N . rf ,fi June, I939 corner in The Flushing Meadows. BoTh oT These evenTs are symbolic oT BryanT. The beauTiTul new building in which BryanT will be housed in The Fall oT I939 marks an epoch in The hisTory oT BryanT'High School. The TaciliTies, The archiTecTure and The equipmenT are up To The splif second oT Time. NaTurally This new palace oT educaTion suggesTs a world Tor beTTer and Tiner Things. The World's Fair, Too, is symbolic because The perisphere and The Trylon Torce us To reTlecT on The moTTo oT The Fair, THE WORLD OF TOMORROW. Finally, The spiriT oT William Cullen BryanT, The paTron OT our school, dominaTes The TuTure. In his life and wriTings, he poinTed The way. HealTh ForemosT among his ideals is HealTh. BryanT, only a puny boy aT birTh, Through daily exercise, Through proper Tood and Thorough care- Tul habiTs oT liTe, buil+ up an enviable physique. He died aT The ripe old age OT 83. Scholarship His inTeresT in scholarship began aT an early daTe. DevoTion To sTudies made him ouTsTanding during his liTe. CharacTer ' CharacTer. Too, is shown in an unblemished career during a period OT hisTory when many were TempTed To sTep aside Trom The paTh oT virTue. Americanism BuT Through all and above all, he was an American. His poems are sTricTly American in Their subiecT, imagery and spiriT. His arTicles in magazines breaThe Americanism and in one poem, THE AGES, he cried ouT, BuT Thou, My CounTry, Thou shall never Tall, eTc. In conclusion, ThereTore, leT us pursue, in THE WORLD OF TO- MORROW The ideals which William Cullen BryanT seT TorTh:-HealTh, Scholarship, CharacTer and PaTrioTism. These ideals breaThe The spiriT oT BryanT High School. JAMES P. WARREN, Principal. We are doubly honored in ThaT we are celebraTing BryanT's TiTTieTh anniversary and also The opening oT The World's Fair. How- ever, we should noT neglecT To give due aTTenTion To our liTe in BryanT. AlThough we were by no means hidden during our Treshman and sophomore years, The TirsT hinT oT Tame was besTowed upon us in our 3B Term. This was The resulT oT a successTul dance and baskeTball game in which we displayed our skill by a vicTory over The Juniors. As Time wenT on, we became acTive in school aTTairs. Members oT our class parTicipaTed in numerous exTra-curricular acTiviTies, includ- ing The DramaTic and Glee Clubs. They have held oTTices in The BryanT Union, The school publicaTion, and oTher responsible posiTions. NeverTheless ,ouTside acTiviTy did noT prevenT a large number oT The class Trom being elecTed inTo The ArisTa, proving ThaT we can com- bine work wiTh pleasure. Our Junior year was signiTicanT in several ways. Once again we displayed our aThleTic abiliTy by winning The Junior-Senior baske+balI game. We also Took our place in The social world wiTh The very de- lighTTul Prom given aT The l-loTel New Yorker. As Seniors we disTinguished ourselves by an especially successTul and unusual cosTumes. CLASS OF JUNE, I939. Wilnessesz Uncle Sam Bryanl Spiril Forfy-six PosTscripT Tempus FugiT YesTerday, noT unlike many oTher Thousands of people. I visiTed The New York WorId's Fair. I'II never TorgeT The hours passed in The realms oT TanTasy and The TuTure and all Those mag- niTicenT sighTs wiTh Their kaleidoscopic eTTecTs. I wandered Trom one exhibiT To anoTher, disregarding hunger and TaTigue, Trying To be The TirsT To see The enTire Fair in one day. When, Thoroughly exhausTed. I was Torced To seek relief Tor my weary limbs, I reclined unobTrusiveIy under one of The numerous Trees near The CommunicaTions Building. IT seemed as Though a Tiny biT oT ToresT had been TransplanTed To This spoT especially Tor my convenience. This was so comTorTable-lying here gazing aT This vasT panorama wiTh iTs specTacular IighTing-Surely I wasn'T sleepy-I wondered whaT The Fair would be like if iT were I955 in- sTead of l939 . . . I wondered . . . Suddenly, I was again exploring The Fair. Only now, sTrangely enough. I was no longer hungry and my TaTige had vanished. I also realized, much To my amazemenT, ThaT I recognized a number oT Tamiliar Taces. I spenT many hours in The persphere, waTching The magniTicenT spec- Tacle oT a luminous word apparenfly suspended in space wiTh gushing TounTains oT liquid reds and blues and green, over which clung a sTrange eThereaI misT. I learned ThaT This beauTiTul IighTing was arranged by Jerome Kissel, who also arranged The nighTly specTacle on FounTain Lake. NOT only was The IighTing on This lake specTacuIar, buT an orchesTra. com- posed oT some world renowned musicians, KaTherine Carr, Felice Andi- rano. Gladys and Dolly Francescki, Gladys DeuTch, and AnThony Zori- vich, sending ouT liITing sTrains oT sweeT music as a background. I visiTed The ConTemporary ArTs Building and marveled aT some wonderTul painTing by an arTisT, beTTer known in more arisTocraTic cir- cles, called Paul ZammiT. In The same building There were'Two sTudios in which were demonsTraTed The Techniques oT modern painTings, and I spenT much Time waTching Phyllis Barion and AnThony MaTTins demon- sTraTe wiTh remarkable skill. In The EasTman Kodak Company Building, a proTessionaI display of phoTography caughT my eye, and I noTiced par- Ticularly The work of a cerTain RuperT Callander. I also heard a IecTure on phoToengrving by Angelo Piraneo. I had spenT a whole week in waTching The acTions oT The ciTy of ForTy-seven June, I939 Fufurama, which was a perfecf model of a fufurisfic cify, complefe fo fhe minufesf defail, and which was designed, I heard, by Edward Urbane and Noel Dussel, working ioinfly. This beaufiful minifure, a high spof of fhe fair, was parf of fhe General Mofors exhibif. Anofher infer- esfing specfacle was fhe Elecfric Man who could see. smell, sing, and counf wifh ifs fingers. If was operafed by Bruno Sobocinski. In 'rhe Medicine and I-Iealfh Building, I made sure fhaf I had visifed bofh fhe Hall of Medical Science and fhe I-Iall of Man. I spoke fo Doro- fhy Afkinson, in charge of fhis hall, and learned fhaf she had a remark- able nursing career behind her. In fhe Hall of Man she infroduced me fo Fred Knoblicki, who was in charge of all fhe denfisfry connecfed wifh 'rhe huge man fhey had for exhibifion purposes, and 'ro Mariorie Baldin- ger who gave a wonderful lecfure on child nursing. Affer eafing my lunch, I visifed fhe Food Building No. 3, in which I saw an inferesfing exhibif being given on preparing food by some well known experfs. Margie Oerfel gave an inferesfing lecfure on a new elecfric sysfem of baking. While passing along fhe Courf of Sfafes and wafching fhe many nafional flags fluffer in an indifferenf wind, I noficed Agnes Wessolowski. a foreign correspondenf and inferprefer, leave fhe League of Nafions Building wifh Mercedes Moran, whose lecfuring on lnfernafional Culfure was world renowned. In fhe Unifed Sfafes Building, I had fhe pleasure of meefing a young fellow by fhe name of Anfhony Lomero, who was engrossed af fhe fime in meefing foreign diplomafs. I-lis fine manners and polife dignify impressed me very much. ll was in fhe Science and Educafion Building, however, 'rhaf I re- ceived a real fhrill, and fhaf was when Roy Werner lecfured on foresfry. I-lis fluency of speech was amazing, and his fremendous knowledge musf have saved many, many miles of foresf acreage. Then Eugene C. Kahfh spenf 'rhree hours in lecfuring on bacferiology. In fhe same building, Gloria Dupuis, Rufh Cyfrin, and Donald Robbins lecfuredlon differenl' fypes of educafion, and I was surprised af how inferesfing fhaf subiecl' could really be. Finally I remember hearing fhe 'rwo finesf voices in America, 'rhose of Yvonefh La Machia and Mary I-Ion, who were iusf abouf fo fell me of fhe . . .and suddenly, a queer sensafion and boisfer- ous voice . . .and . . . Say, buddy. can'f you read? 'lhaf sign says Keep off flue grass. Furfhermore, you should cafch your forfy winks af home.
