One concern of the administration was to prepare the students for mainstreaming of Educable Mentally Retarded students next year. Vice Principal Neil Lightle felt, lt will be hard to get students to accept others, but when they learn of their talents it will be easier. In addition to Mrs. Mary Lou Weddle, secretary to principals, and Mrs. Marjorie Pack, two new secretaries were hired as replacements: Mrs. Jackie Slifer, activities secretary and Mrs Lynda Eichler atten dance secretary Under special arrangements with the school board Mr Fton Bruch who was elected a national executive committee member of the National Education Assoc substituted for various classes when he was not traveling for N E A Administration li ,T -5- v Secretary to Counselors ' WWW W .1 'L-W ff l' 7, g vggzwiffi' f . 7 , , f . ,gf ::q,.3',': VN, 1 1 ,, , x 51 ' LHC k .. ,.--f 4 ' ' - I I-' A V T ' -.--12-a fig I .AQ L x . ,, ,1 P. , 5 , 1 5, wmv. Various duties were performed by Mrs. Susan Kisslinger-librarian, Mr. Phillip Legg-audio visual advisor, Mrs. Katie Turner-counselor, and Miss Dorothy Bales-senior counselor. With one counselor leaving to take over new responsibilities, only two were left to compensate for three classes. I feel like a forest ranger who spends his entire time outing fires! stated Mrs. Turner sophomore and junior counselor. Miss Bales senior counselor com- mented We assist and encourage a stu- dent to investigate his many options and understand his potential so he may make his own decisions. A larger room was added to better ac- comodate audio visual equipment. However Mr. Legg feels that the bigger room is still inadequate for their opera- tion. Kaz Science creates interest in learning Science Club is an organization to further the scientific knowledge of its members. It does this through en- couragement and participation of dedicated students in scientific study and research. lt better acquaints students with science concepts and current trends, said Mrs. Rosemary Garvey, sponsor. Students are provided with an oppor- tunity to learn more about science by in- volvement in projects, taking field trips and having guest speakers. One new activity was Science Week. It consisted of three assemblies. They were Previews In Progress, by General Motors, Energy: Today and Tomorrow, Oak Ridge University Association and Views of Red China, by Dr. Henry Mitchell. lt was to provide special op- portunities for science students and to broaden their knowledge of science, said Mr. Roger Smith, sponsor. Twenty-one members were involved in the club. One member Don Evans said, I enjoy working with people my age to learn about our earth and how we 1' can help clean it up. ipi-v ' .-'iff 1. New I,eaders!7 Varsity VoIIeybaIl!135 Many injuries plague team Due to many injuries to key members of the team, boys track didnit do as well as they had hoped. The loss of distance run- ner, John Moore, who was out the major part ofthe season with a knee injury, hurt the team in distance events. The team faced many problems besides injuries during the season' Coach Bill Sum- ma believes that a major problem is that a lot of good talent in the school is going to waste. At the district meet where the team placed third 10 members qualified for state. Dean Rohr and the 880 and mile re- lay teams placed at state. The most outstanding participants were Dean Rohr who captured the school record in the shot put event' Richard More- land who was high scorer for the team' and Russ Ensor who was the best team man. The team unity has been better this year than the three years I've participated in track. Being with the team was a thrill I will never forget, said Russ Ensor. Chrisman Opponent l . Shortages affect widespread areas In the past years, many measures have been taken to prevent shortages due to an energy crisis. People have been asked to turn down the heat in their homes during winter months, and to restrict their driving or ride in car pools to save gasoline. Mark Hagan . . . Our fireplace was built where it would heat practically all of our house so that it conserves on natural gas. We have turned our heat down and shut off the furnace overnight. Pam Houk . . . The energy crisis has not affected me in any way. Issac Harris . . . Even if prices sky- rocket I will continue to drive to school and work. Because of the distance that l live from work I couldnt possibly afford a taxi or bus and l may risk the chance of not arriving on time. Shannon Harrison . . . When l go down the road a lot of gas stations have gone out of business. These things signify to me that the energy crisis is really with us. When the trend of disco music first began, many critics V said it was only a passing fad that would fade out in a few years. - 4 Lorretta Ragan . . .
