Homes... have always been an integral part of the American life. A man's house is his castle, said Sir Edward Coke, hundreds of years ago, and it still holds true today. A man's home is where he has dared to be himself because there was wants. whatever have reflected man's personali- tyl and inner self by their creativity in design or upkeep. Like other cities, Indepen- dence has homes the entire city takes pride in. Built in 1877 by Colonel twenty- three rooms and two towers. This structure has been regard- ed as one of two outstanding examples of Gothic Architec- ture in the U.S. In 1934 the Gentry home was included in the Historic American Building Survey. Constructed prior to the Civil war, the McCoy House, served as the home of William McCoy, first mayor of Independence. Originally, the red brick Georgian house was located on 14 acres. falling!-Sawyer hofine wlsfdeiigiltill in 1885 by San- ford Wiiite, and is still oc- casionally -open I to the public. ,We'hfve' one or two tours for various elubs every year, said Mrs. Jennings. The Independence Study Club had one tour to raise funds to help restore the old Spring. But in addition to being a tourist attraction, the house is also a home. We have spent 32 years living here, and it's marvelous. Our children's friends have gathered here, said Mrs. Jennings, and we have shared our home with hundreds of people.
