Paving the way for many other denominations, they marked the commencing of what was to be a major role of this area. One of the things that has attracted people to Independence is the many 6 RELIGION IN INDEPENDENCE different churches. President of the Independence Ministerial Alliance, Donald E. Harvey, said, Independence is a city with deep religious roots. It has approximately 100 church congregations of the Christian faiths. One of the oldest groups in Independence, the First Chris- tian Church, was organized on l .luly 4, 1835. A fire in 1918 destroyed their first building, and the present church at Kan- sas and Pleasant was not com- pleted until 1924. The largest church in Independence, the Reorganiz- ed Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints' Stone Church, laid its Cornerstone on April 6, 1888.
