Burlingame were di- rectly responsible for maintaining a smooth running school. They were aided by the three office secretaries, Mrs. Linda Wait, attendance secretary: Mrs. Becky Spake, activity sec- retary: and secretary to the principal, Mrs. Mary Lou Weddle. Mr. Greene surpervised faculty and co- ordinated inter-school matters, with helpfrom Mr. Burlingame who worked with stu- dents on individual problems. They worked as a team to better activities, curriculum and facilitiesin theschool. Mr. Burlingame stated, My biggest problem is lack of time: there isn't en- ough time to do all I want and need to do. Much of Mr. Burlingame's time was spent handling the majority of disciplinary cases. Aids understanding Communications was the key to better understanding in the English department. lt helps the student to communicate bet- ter orally and in writing. The characters we study in literature may give more in- sight into getting along with people, said Brenda Pippin, English instructor. Flexible scheduling was a change from the ordinary traditional English classes. Its biggest advantage is CHOICE - both for the students to study something that interests them and for the teachers to teach one of his favorite areas, stated Rosemary Brouhard. Much planning and co-operation from the students went into flexible scheduling to make it successful. The program, in its third year, was used in the sophomore and junior English classes. Most teachers feel it strengthens student-teacher rela- tionships. Just when you start getting sick of each other you get a change, said Laura Vernon. This team teaching method was a new experience to the sophomores, and habitual to the juniors. Just as you get used to one teacher you have to trade to another one, who grades different, with different teaching methods, stated Dreama Jones. I like it. It helps to take the monotony out of school, said David Colyer. . cs 1 b, , - f ', 1, mf f , .. 'Dm fit 'Q 90' f,.,Y 1 -VN Miss Helen Tandy, B.S. Science Junior Class Sponsor, Chairman Science Club Sponsor PEN I S , Solving problems... Helps thought skills Mathematics and science were two sub' jects required for students at William Chrisman to graduate. Many students asked, ln what way is math going to help me in later life? This was answered by Mr. Donald Fore who said, Math is a method to develop a logical thinking pattern. To develop an organized thought process of a situation is what we desire to accomplish. Logical thinking pertains to everyday sit- uations that come about and one will need this to succeed in the outside world. Also many degrees in colleges require mathema- tics previously. When asked why science was important for a student to know, Miss Oneida Beeman replied, Science is most imperative for anyone who plans to go into any field such as being a dietician, all hospital related work fdoctors, nurses, X-ray technicians, or pathologists, etc.J. It is also a basis for maintaining an individuals own health. Thus mathematics and science are a basis which help Chrisman students long after they go out to form their lives in a large world requiring the use of these two subjects everyday. The students who take math and science will never regret it. fi' 0 Mr,WilIiam Brown, M.A. Mathematics Junior Class Sponsor , 1' 36 MATH AND SCIENCE 1 g Vx QM a-G3-.5-rf K if 1 X . Juniors cite m ethods of improving WCHS According to juniors, Chrisman could be made better if they did as good in football next year as we did this year, if all the teachers would quote W.C. Fields in class, and if they would give co- educational physical education classes. Some boys thought having more 'cock' girls, and tak- ing outa senior girl who really wanted to date you, would make Chrisman rate high. Getting rid of all the sophomore rookies, giving every cloud a silver lining and filling every bowl of vege- table soup with vegetables. and getting CHICA- GO to perform at one of the Beartowns, would make it for others. lf Chrisman wasn't geared to the privileges of the seniors it wouldn't be so 'green' for underclassmen, and if we had girls' basketball teams like the boys do, high school would be better. For a few, Chrisman could only be improved if graduation were here, or if school were held on Saturday and Sunday and the weekend lasted from Monday until Friday. L fy WX it XM Sophs recall instances full of embarassment Do you remember falling asleep in Miss Ott's sophomore English class and waking up to find nothing but'seniors. or running up the hall and smashing into an open door? Maybe you tripped into your locker, or stumbled down the stairs, or dropped all your books in the hall right after you slipped on the ice in front of the school while the buses were unloading. Did you ever have a tuna salad sandwich hit you up-side the head while you were eating lunch? or accidently take someone elses report card home, fumble the football on a sure score, '-'smack your first date in the head when you put your arm around her, and then get caught by a cop the first time you park? A senior might have told you directions to the gun range when you asked where to find the cafeteria, and then maybe you dropped your plate lunch and didn't know Mr. Burlingame wasn't the janitor. Finally someone takes your shorts in gym, and you get stuck in the 'john' for two hours. A ash-1 Sophs try out self-study concept 1 A , , .. Bob Baker , VickiCarson gk: ,sl T. X - 4 .. The first day was terrible, said Robert Foster, one of 493 sophomores who, on the first day found themselves surrounded by unfamiliar faces. Unaccustomed to the surroundings, soph- omores were bewildered, but rapidly adjust- ed to new procedures and began their strife for identity and recognition. John Cromley and Dan Crawford made their contributions to the varsity foot- ball team, as did Dale Edmondson to the varsity crosscountry squad. Several sophomores directed their ta- lents toward the fall play, making a siz- able part of cast and crews. Under the di- rection of sophomore sponsors, Miss Helen Tandy and Mrs. Kay Kassen sophomores took IPS ...ffxqf 5 N X - ,Q- X' ' ' -.. Vickie lVlarIatt, who filled the role of Char- Iie's mother, said, The play was a group ef- fort, with everyone giving a little to make the final production very successful. Including cast and crews, there were over one hundred people involved in the fall production. Bruins prove spirit Juniors proved to be the most spir- ited during spirit week before the arch- rival Truman game. Every class should have as much spirit as the juniors, said senior Margaret Nickle. Juniors also received spirit footballs for having the best decorated hall. I knew we'd win all along, said Larry Helm. Many students participated in special spirit days like Blue and Gold day, hat and boot day, hall clay and decorated door day: others didn't seem to get involved at all. There weren't enough kids who participa- ted: including me! said Larry Jeffers. Seniors were awarded the spirit ball after a successful race of tricycles in the pep assembly. Leading the seniors to victory were Steve Childs, Rick Porter, and Chuck Donaldson, Spirits ran high at the Truman game. As soon as the Bears took the field the crowd exploded with spirit and kept the same intense high through the game. The Bruins won 40-0 over the Patriots and captured the Wagon Wheel trophy for the first time since its inception. Learns new routine The sophomores had an up and down sea- son behind the coaching of Clifford Mohn. This seasons basketball team was really great. We had a lot fo fun with Coach Mohn, stated Greg Gulick, Due to the lack of inexperience the sopho- mores lost their first game to Oak Park 44-36. Remember the junior varsity squad started out the same way. but came up with some ex- citing wins. ln the second game of the 1972-73 season the sophomores ripped over the North Kansas City Hornets 69-50. After losing to both Center and Raytown, the sophomores were on their way up. They beat two important teams which helped them strive forward. Beating the Van Horn Falcs by 14 points and the Oak Park Northmen by nine boosted their morale. Only having eight more games left in the season the rookies lost only four of the remaining eight, leaving the season and the record seven-seven. Dwayne Magruder expresses his feelings and thoughts on the 1972-73 Sophomore Bas- ketball season and tells of what is to come in the future, Sophomore team is cock enough that we will get to state our senior year. 13 A X T J W N if QQ' vi 1 1? rs.-:E?A 3 yan T. Put .together 1973 On August 29, 1972. at 7:45 the final bell rang sending over 1.400 students to their pro- spective homerooms to begin a new day and a new year. For sophomores the year was a new experi- ence, for juniors it was a familiar routine. Se- niors looked upon the year with mixed emo- tions. for them spring would bring graduation and the end of 12 years of school. The year was a fairly active one for many students, as many became involved in numer- ous academic and extra-curricular activities. Yet still there remained an over all feeling that school spirit was . . . well. just not what it used to be. - ' Highlights of the year included a school wide election held in November. the annual Follies which were presented in March. and a new addition to the school which was complet- ed in the spring. In general the year was a fairly ordinary year. There were good and bad times. new problems and new solutions. and the hope that next year would be a better one. A At 2:15 on May 23rd the final bell rang once again. Over 1.400 students left the building and the year was over. Some would be return- ing next year. but many others had filed through the doors for the last time.- Abernathy, Janie: 48, 89, 90 A CAPPELLA CHOIR: 50 Ackerman, Donald: 90, 168 Ackerrnan, Mike: 90 Adkins, Dennis: 90 Agee, Arlene: 60 Akeman, Charles: 47, 90 Akin, David: 47, 60, 123, 159 Alderson, Gary: 60 Aldridge, Crystal: 32, 48.49, 57, 60, 138 Aldridge, Fletcher: 90 Aleshire, Gary: 90, 184 Alexander, David: 108 Alexander, Diana: 60 Alexander, Shirlene: 108, 151, 152 Allcock, Cheryl: 60 Allee, Arlowa: 108 Allen, Linda: 90 Allen, Mona: 90 Allen, Paul: 46, 47, 52 Allison, Ken: 49, 90 Alvis, Bill: 108 ANDERSON, ADELINE: 28 .
