The most outstanding of these were the Topeka, Wyandotte, and their own invitational tournament held December l4 and l5. Seventeen members participated in debate activities throughout the season. First team debaters were: Celia Fry, Pat Dickey, Dolores Tandy and David Freeman. Coaching this successful team was Miss Margaret Meredith. Beginning in l93l, debating has become one of Chrisman's outstanding activities. As a result of this, the group was awarded a plaque for the chapter with the greatest number of points accumulated in the past tour years within the state. The question for debate was: Resolved, that every American citizen should be subject to conscription for essential service in time of war. Douglas Hagan and Virginia Jennings propound further points at the debate question as their class- mates take notes. -n L ' I i-wg-' - 4 0' S. The Boys' Pep club was newly organized this year. In the comparitively short time ot seven months it became an important tactor in maintaining school pep. The main purpose ofthe club is to promote school spirit, provide a strong cheering section, and to assist the Girls' Pep club at the games. In previous years, the Girls' Pep club was in charge ot the organized cheering section, and the addition ot the boys' section made a great and no- ticeable improvement. The three boy cheerleaders chosen from the club were Jerry Wingo, Mike Nitlis, and Richard Willough- by. The boys, wearing royal blue flannel trousers of bell-bottom style, displayed their vigor. Gold pull- over sweaters plus blue and gold caps completed the colorful costume. Since this club was organized late in the year, it did not have many opportunities tor activity besides the actual participation in the cheering section. A. B. Spears was the sponsor of the group. This year's otticers were: president, Kenneth Rall, vice-president, John Dunn, secretary-treasurer, Doug- las Hagan. To promote sportsmanship, co-operation, and school spirit is the purpose of the Girls' Pep Club, sponsored by Miss Oneida Beeman. The girls exercised these three qualities during the year as they participated in and sponsored various activities. Outstanding among these events were the homecoming football game and the appearance of the cheerleaders on pep assemblies. These cheer- leaders also took part in all the football games. The scholastic requirements for membership are an S average in art and at least an M average in all other subjects. Each student who is interested in becoming a member must prepare a minimum of ten pieces to enter in the spring exhibit. These pieces are iudged by capable guest artists, who select tTrst, sec- ond, and third place honors, from each of the three classes - sophomore, junior, and senior. The student who merits membership must retain it by displaying ten pieces of art each year in the spring exhibit. After the new members are selected, they are formally initiated at ci program held in the William Chrisman auditorium. The program includes the pre- sentation of awards and N. A. H. S. pins, and a candle-lighting ceremony. Following the program the art exhibit is open to the public. National Art Honor Society participates in the Emery Bird Thayer National Scholastic exhibit and the art program of the Independence School System in the spring at the Memorial hall. The Sturges Jewelry Company awards a medal to the outstand- ing art student. During the 195i-52 school term Gary Rawlings served as president of the William Chrisman chapter. Other officers were vice-president, Joe Dick High- tower, and secretary, Patsy Clark. The William Chrisman chapter of the National Forensic League is composed of those students who are outstanding in the field ot oratory, debate, and declamation.
