CHRISMANITES really have a Team To cheer abouT This year and should be proud of The many vicTories ThaT iT has scored in proving supremacy in The regional Class A TournamenT, The William Jewell TournamenT, and The Blue Springs Tourna- menT. The William Chrisman cagers nabbed second place in The Ruskin TournamenT and placed Them- selves high in The sTanding of The Pony Express Conference. T Thezeason has broughT many Thrills eEdTchills. One of The Tormer was The drubbing given Blue Springs in The Ruskin TournamenT. The small Blue Springs ouTTiT iusT couldn'T cope wiTh The Towering sTrengTh of The Chrisman quinTeT. The game ended 54 To 8. The hearfbreaker was The reTurn game wiTh NorTh Kansas CiTy in which an overTime Tree-shoT spelled deTeaT Tor Chrisman. ThaT score was 34 To 35. The highesT Chrisman score was 59 poinTs againsT Grandview, The lowesT was 26 poinTs, com- piled in Two games, in deTeaTing and being de- TeaTed by LaTayeTTe. WorTh calling aTTenTion To are The games played in The Regional TournamenT. The William Chrisman baskeTeers sTamped on Cen- Tral in The preliminaries To a Tune of 4I To 25, Then cleaned Paseo 45-29 in The semi-Tinals and won The championship by whipping SouThwesT 53-33. By win- ning The regional TournamenT. Chrisman received The righT To play in The sTaTe TournamenT where, alThough beaTen by ST. Louis McBride High School by The score oT 60 To 45, They showed Their rivals a hard Time. Had Tommy Conrow, our baskeTball capTain This year, been able To play his usual game, The score mighT have been changed, buT The 5-TooT ll-inch rebounding spark-plug was side- lined wiTh a bad ankle. The Chrisman Team was excepTionally deadly aT The Tree-Throw line, miss- ing only Two chariTy shoTs in The enTire game. Along wiTh The 24 To 6 record of wins and losses chalked up This season, Three Team members won posiTions on various honorary all-sTar Teams. Besides being The leading scorer Tor The Team, Gary Bergen was awarded TirsT Team honors in The Blue Springs TournamenT. BERGEN was elecTed To The second Team in The William Jewell TournamenT. Tom Conrow was on The TirsT Team oT The Blue Springs. Lloyd Adams was The only Chrisman player To receive a TirsT Team award in The William Jewell TournamenT. AT The end oT The season The Pony Express League selecTed an all-sTar Team which included Gary Ber- gen on The TirsT and Tom Conrow on The second Team. AlThough The oTher members oT The squad did noT place on a TirsT or second Team, They were all adepT aT rimming The goal, and all proved Them- selves excellenT sporTs. These members oT The A squad generally played The Tollowing posiTions: Gary Bergen and Joe Sousley, cenTerg Lloyd Adams and Don Wilkin- son, guard: Tom Conrow, Fred PoTTer, and Edwin Ragan, forward. As The boys were versaTile players, They oTTen played oTher posiTions. The Team loses by graduaTion,,,TouLmembers: Conrow, Wilkinson., Ragan, and Sousley. Don Wilkinson goes in on a TasT break. L. THESE players will be greafly missed, especially, perhaps, is fhis frue of Tommy Conrow, who lef- fered nof only in baslcefball, buf in foofball and fraclc as well. Forfunafely, several veferans of fhis season remain: Adams, Bergen, Poffer, Coberly, and Deam, fo menfion a few. Ofher promising maferial includes many players who are members of fhe presenf sophomore and junior classes. The Bears are members of fhe Pony Express Conference, which includes fhe fhree Sf. A group 'of Chrisman girls organized a pep club in I93b. Later it was disbanded after functioning some years. It was reorganized in the fall of I948, under the spon- sorship of Miss Betty Ann Street. The purpose of the club is to give organized support to the athletes of the school and to encourage good sportsmanship among the students. DO YOU have pep, a good strong voice, and an M average? You do? Then you, too, can join the ranlrs of the William Chrisman High School Pep Club, one of the youngest and most popular of the organizations in the school. The cheers at the games were very good this year. The fifty- five members did their best and their loudest under the leadership of the cheerleaders, Ruth Ann Ziegenhorn, Ermaleen Crim, Virginia Russell, Eleanor Shull, Mescal Fisher, Diane Dodsworth. Between halves at the football games the club presented a number of well- performed drills. At Christmas the girls provided gifts for an adopted family. The club also sponsored the homecoming game. Each girl will be awarded a silver bar for each year she remains a member. To qualify, she must attend games and meetings, par- ticipate in drills, and wear the official uniform: a yellow skull cap, Chrisman sweater, white blouse, and royal blue skirt. Much of the success of the Pep Club can be attributed to the interested supervision of its two sponsors, Miss Betty Ann Street and Miss Roberta Rice. 56 The club has had an enioyable season. lt was able to lend vocal support to the team at both home and out-of-town games. Their success has been due to the interest of the members and to the organization of the club itself. Aside from the scholastic average which prospective members must 'First possess, sixty participation points are required. These may be gained by attendance at meet- ings and games, the wearing of the uniform, and participation in drills between halves of the games. To remain a member, each one must continue to earn points. The officers 'For the club were as follows: president, Barbara Petre and Marilyn Miller: vice-president, Mary Fae Heclrer and Gwen Kimball: secretary, Mary Jo Sneed and Patricia Scott: 'treas- urer, Roberta Ellis and Janice Jipseng reporter, Viola Velt and Beverly Burrusg drill commander, Joan Ebling lcaptainl, Mildred Stephenson, and Diann Fisher. The prospective driver must be sixteen years of age. must have a driver's license, and must, of course, lack the knowledge of how to drive a car. The stu- dents enrolled in the course meet for lecture and recitation on three days a week. On two days a week they have the actual experience of driving a car. This car is a special one, designed for driver education courses and furnished to the school by a local automobile dealer. Nineteen students com- pleted the course during the first semester and twenty-four during the second term.
