The first thing one does when returning to school is quickly dismiss the parents and unpack — this will leave plenty of time for socializing and catching up on the three months that have separat- ed you from your classmates. Then, there is the conventional and routine HUG, HUG, KISS, KISS sort of thing to renew old acquaintances. Finally, someone says, It ' s 4:30, time to eat. The strongest feeling of deja vu that you have ever experienced over- takes you. Just as the pleasing memory of mom ' s cooking begins to seep into all that is organic in your person, it dawns on you . . . The alarm clock triggers (7:45am, next morning). Registra- tion! With the most eagerness that one can physically muscle up at this hour of the morning, you embark to Thomas Business Building to find yet another forgotten experience — FORMS, FORMS, FORMS! Then, as one waits in line before continuing on to again wait in line, you start to wonder what ' s going on at the homefront — shopping, T.V., football. Then one again remembers The alarm clock triggers (7:45am, next morning). No time for breakfast — late for class! E = mc-; supply, demand; War of 1812 — as you sit and listen to a professor who, if able to bottle and market his lectures, could solve the world ' s insomnia problems, you are again remi nded . . . THE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE! It is amazing how the average college student envisions his or her college experience. The idea of what one subjects himself to in the name of this creature hidden under the guise of higher education is frightening and beyond conscious thought. Why do students do it? Is it worth the agony? It is these and other questions that the 1 987- 88 CRUSADER addresses. So, for now, sit back, relax, and ponder your own college experience as we embark upon our mission into the strange, unknown, and unanswerable. A Tale of Two Brothers Part I o nee upon a lime, a very long, long lime ago. Their parents, hoping to see their sons prosper in life, sent them out into the world to improve themselves. As was the tradition of the day, it was decided they would begin their journey through life as squires-in-training in the house of some great man of learning, prowess, and wisdom. Knowing that a journey of this kind can be frought with great dangers. Lord Dad and Lady Mom chose the house of the wisest man they knew . . . KING RALPH, the monarch of the neigh- boring Kingdom of Carey. l ing Ralph, known to his subjects as Ralph the good, will- - ingly accepted the responsibility for the education of these two young people. He was always looking for bright new addi- tions to his kingdom. Eagerly the brothers went, however, unbe- knownst to them, their paths were to be filled adventures far beyond even their wildest dreams. everal weeks later, after they had settled and had started their training, a transformation occurred: slowly, life ' s plan began to separate the brothers. Ed, who worked diligently in his studies, spent all of his time reading and preparing the next day ' s assignments. Sean, however, decided that there was life outside the castle walls and spent most of his time in search of loose companions. But, the severing blow came when the amiable monarch introduced them to Lady Kay, his niece visit- ing from the Land of Blue Mountains. Both were smitten with her beauty and each was determined to claim her hand. The Lady Kay, however, had ideas of her own. to be continued . . . • '  Administration Sarah Burrus Registrar Dr. Walter Butler Dean, School of Education Dr. Hugh Dickens Vice President for Development and Dean of Graduate Education -d Student Development inator, Coast Campus Dale Goodin Director of Financial Aid Steve Knight Coach of Men ' s Basketball and Athletic Director Alice McCardle Director of Public Relations and Alumni Affairs Dr. Joan Dean, Schc Dr. J. She had only to glance at her heros Jor each oj their hearts to melt. Lady Kay, I think it safe to say, truly loved each of them. They both contained qualities she wanted in a love. In Ed, she found the bookwormish hard work thai destines great men for fame. Sean, however embodied her need for youthful irresponsibility. The ideal for her would have both these qualities combined into one suitor. But since that seemed im- possible, she made do with what she had. The effect this had on the brothers was monstrous. The brothers that had spent their lives in such close communion were beginning to drift apart. Once, when Ed was accused of putting soap suds in the moat — an action committed by Sean — , Sean saved the day by circumventing the guards attention long enough for our devious heros to escape. The second time a similar situation happen, Sean let Ed spend three nights in the dungeon. He hoped to use this lime with the lovely Lady Kay. Ed saw what his brother had done to him. Even though he had spent the night of his supposed crime hard at work in his studies, he sat three days in the catacombs because of it. In retaliation. he developed an alter-ego. By day he was the industrious Ed. At night, he became the WICKED- SO-AND-SO. No one knew the identity of this belligerent scoundrel — vandal of castle walls, harrassor of old people, ruthless sabatagor of the king s favorite milk cow, Geraldine. The transformation came to the youth because of the strife between the two brothers over the hand of Lady Kay. Ed never knew what his jealous actions had caused. But, as in the courting rit- ual of the day. Lady Kay set as her challenge for the brothers to settle the Great Controversy, as it had come to be called — shewanted them to capture the WICKED-SO-AND-SO . . . but. thai ' s another story. To Be Continued . . . ALUMNI LUNCHEON The Homecoming luncheon has been and contin- ues to be a big event at Carey. It is a time for reminiscing with friends and colleagues and a time to look to the future. This years luncheon was highlighted by the intro- duction of the Alumnus of the Year, Miss Alice Davis, a graduate of Mississippi Woman ' s College in 1922. Miss Davis received this honor for her civic contributions as well as for her contributions to Carey College including the Elizabeth Davis O ' Neill Scholarship in honor of her sister, a gra- duate of the class of 1932. In addition to Miss Davis, Dr. Elise Mathews Curtis — class of 1928, Mary Welsh McKenzie — class of 1930, Jeannette Travis Lawrence — class of 1931, Gordy Hughes — class of 1931, and Dorothy P ' Pool Ware — class of 1 9 1 9, were presented flow- ers and recognized at the luncheon. Providing musi- cal entertainment were Mrs. Ware, Ken Fujisawa — class of 1986, Leo Day, Glen Matthews, the Wil- liam Carey College Chorale, and the School of Mu- sic Show Group. ■imM ' . Sean had determination in his heart while Ed contained more of a feeling of Oh dear! Ed, working under a protective instinct, led Sean around the country- side — Sean never suspected anything. When the night had fallen, Ed had almost convinced Sean that the WICKED SO- AND-SO had left the kingdom and that they should return to the safety of the palace. Just then, one of the old people that Ed had harassed recognized him — the news devastated the kingdom. King Ralph banished Ed from the kingdom for his crimes against the state. But, all shared in Ed ' s guilt — each of them learned a lesson. Sean now realized that his youthful irresponsibility does not excuse his actions toward his brother. Lady Kay regretted her part in the matter. To avoid any further trouble, she agreed to marry Sean. But, Ed learned the greatest lesson of all: all work and no play makes Ed a WICKED SO-AND-SO. One gains many things — friends, great learning, and maturity. Perhaps the most difficulty gift to receive from the college experience is that of the friend. He is only temporary. One knows that one day. he or she will have to return him. When this day comes, it is followed with tears — the only comfort one receives is the ability to ponder how much richer a life is because of this friendship. It is sad to release a creature, but remember, it is immortal- ized in your heart. The quality of education is the gift of the instructor. Everyone is plagued with professors whom they don t particularly care for. However, someone once said, every teacher has something to teach. What one receives from the classroom is up to the individual. But, most importantly, the youth becomes an adult during the days of his higher education. The child, in the absence of mom and dad, is forced to take his place in society. There is a lot to be said for the college experience. The 19S -SS CRUS. D- ER contains the greatest event of these years. The next time you are jtist thumbing through, ponder exactly what you are making of your coUege life. These days are the foundation on which the future will rest. McNeil Any of you that know anything about the publication of a year-book will undoubtedly realize that I have broken quite a few rules. But, in my defense, though full aware of each and every rule shattered, I felt I was giving the student what they wanted. In times past, I have heard complaints of not enough pictures and too much copy. The copy has been cut drastically and the availability of pictures doubled. I came into the position of editor late. Its tuff working from someone elses photos, etc. But in any case, here is my little experiment. Everyone needs to be made aware of the extra effort made by Monica Gaston. There were several late nights and early morn- ings, but she stuck it through. I would like to personally thank her for her efforts and my deepest appreciation goes out to her — for without her, we may not have had a yearbook. Enjoy, Mark J. McNeil Editor J H y ■ ' Vi L ' ■■■!
