While days were filled with hard-to- get-to 8:00 a.m. classes or all-afternoon labs, time was found at night for ballgames, movies, and skating parties. Opening 17 Events 19 Miss William Carey College Dianne Evans On February 4, Dianne Evans was crowned Miss William Carey College in front of a near-capacity crowd. For her talent, the blue-eyed brunette from Taylorsville sang Fll Take My Time , an original composition by Keith Thompson. By winning this ti- tle, Dianne earned the right to repre- sent the college at the Miss Mississip- pi Pageant in July. Placing in the pageant were second alternate Karen Sowards, first alternate Julie Sim- mons, third alternate Lesia Stringer, and fourth alternate, Susan Buckley. 20 Miss Carey Miss Carey 21 Carey Dinner o o AS TIME GOES BY, a musical revue compiled and ar- ranged by Keith Thompson, was presented by the Carey Dinner Theatre June 5-20. This drama went back to the old radio show days, complete with slapstick, sophisticated swing, and show-stoppers. 22 Theatre Theatre in H O ERNEST IN LOVE, a musical based on Oscar Wilde ' s THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, was pre- sented June 26-July 11. Several facilities were dedicated and named. The administration building was designated as Fairchild Administrative Center. The Learning Resources Center became McMullan Hall, and a classroom building was named Parker Hall. Honorary doctorates in business administration were conferred on Rodney Fairchild, Pat McMullan, Jr., and Wayne Parker, for whose families the buildings were named and portraits were unveiled. The convocation was held at First Baptist Church, Gulfport. Wallace Burn, president of South Central Bell and an honorary alumnus of Carey, was keynote speaker. A special feature was the premier of a commissioned anthem written by Dr. James Fry, Dean of the School of Music, based on Psalm 127:1 — Except the Lord build the House, they labor in vain who build it. 28 SGA Students Ace Activities State Convention, a fall retreat, and Mission Emphasis Week were several of the spiritual renewal events sponsored by the BSU during the fall semester. Each event was well attended by students seeking Christian fellowship and growth. Clowns, puppets, and visits to Columbia Training School pro- vided some off-campus ministries while noondays, held twice a week, ministered on campus. Summer missions provided jobs for those willing to undertake challenges, and money to support them was raised in every imaginable way, from auctions to pledges. 30 BSU (aptist Student Union BSU 31 Action-packed . . . The six services held during the week were conducted with students preaching and providing the The services reached a broad cross-section of the student body; the average attendance was 160. The success of the revival was due largely to the person- to-person witnessing among students, as well as the hours of preliminary prayer and planning. Two professions of faith were made prior to the revival because of students ' personal witnessing. One profession of faith was made during the revival, and another person surrendered to the call to preach. Response to the revival is evident in the growing spiritual awareness on cam- pus The spiritual atmosphere is encouraging; the effects of the revival have been long-lasting Womanless Beauty Pageant The Womanless Beauty Pageant, sponsored by the BSU to raise money for summer missions, was held November 5, 1981. Thirteen contestants competed for the title won by Sherri Lynn Bower whose talent presentation was one of the highlights of the pageant. 38 Halloween r ' ' ft r I 1 Halloween 39 December 6, 1981 The Imperials, a contemporary Christian singing group, appeared before a packed house in Thomas Hail on December 6. The group performed their hit songs during the first half of the concert, and then entertained during the second half with Christmas music. 40 Imperials f y J r ' A Imperials 41 Santa Brings Finals 42 Christmas Kris Kringle Week brought Christmas spirit even though finals were one weeic away. Maintenance decorated the buildings while clubs sent holiday greetings with huge Christmas cards. Decorated dorm doors added color to the hallways. Santa Claus visited the banquet to distribute candy while handbells, Chapel Choir, and the Brass Ensemble entertained. Prizes were given for the best door decorations in each dorm and the Art Club won the award for the best Christmas card. Christmas 43 Dear Mom and Dad, Things at school are rolling along. Classes are the same as usual, and many other activities make our days full. Dorm life is great, and nothing slows down before midnight. The food is by no means like yours. Mom, but it gets me through the day. Speaking of living day by day — well as you know I am working on campus, but we only get paid once a month and with prices like they are today, money is scarce. Please understand I did not spend all of mine, but Lisa, my roommate was thrown in the pond one night and guess whose money she had in her pocket. We had been shopping and she had all my change. Somehow the money drowned. Other than that things are great. Will be home as soon as I get some money. I love you! P.S. L isa needs money, too. 44 Campus Life Campus Life 45 46 Contents CONTENTS People Administration 48 100 Organizations Athletics 124 170 Other Campuses Sponsors 192 214 PEOPLE EDITOR Debbie Strickland INSIDE . . . Confucius I like the 1982 Crusader ' s emphasis upon the importance of preparation days at Carey College in your future success. Perhaps you should be forewarned that even with the best of preparation and performance you may feel that success has escaped you. Huss died at the stake of Constance. Did he fail? He paved the way for Luther. Tyndale, the translator of the Bible, was strangled at Vilvorde, and then burned, and at the stake he prayed, 0 Lord, open the King of England ' s eyes! Did he fail? The very next year Henry VIII issued his order that the Bible should be published through all England and placed in every church for the free use of the people. As you go forth from your preparation days at Carey I admonish you, Do not be discouraged. Never give up work and further study. Never despair. There is no such thing as failure for the true servant of God. .. :%w President Administration 103 Board of Trustees Seated: Dr. Eugene Dobbs, Rev. Gerald Buckley, Luther Boyd, John D.
