CRUSADER 1977 William Carey College Hattiesburg, Mississippi Editor— Joanne Myrick Entertainment Groups Competition Leadership People Sponsors William Carey is a name but more than just a name, it is a symbol the school represents. A symbol of Chris- tian living which we as the students and faculty of William Carey College try to reinforce. Without this symbol Carey College would not be the dis- tinctive school that it is today. This year more than ever we feel the students have responded to this sym- bol of Christian living and are trying to hold high this ideal in their individual lives as well as in classroom situations and all areas of campus living, in- cluding New Orleans and the Coast Campus. We are one-in Christian love. Carey on the Coast This life can be lived in many different ways by many different people who all have the same ideas in mind to be brought together through love. dication When one thinks of the personality of a Christian, he thinks first of the character- istic of love. Love, as an inherent trait, of a person, is reflected as he walks, shares, and labors with all students, faculty and nnankind. One who epitomizes this ideal of Chris- tian love in times of fellowship, n times of trial, in times of sorrovi ' , and in times of making important decisions is the one we are proud to honor. We dedi- cate the 1977 Crusader to Dr. Jerry Os- walt, Vice-President of Student Affairs. Thank you Dr. Oswalt for being a loving, caring Christian. Miss Mississippi lELCOiE HOME BOBBYE 1 1 Yes! Our Miss Carey became Miss Mis- sissippi this past summer when she par- ticipated in the State Pageant. It was an honor for both William Carey College and Bobbye Wood to be our Miss Mis- sissippi at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City. Bobbye, we are proud of you because you represented the finest in Christian womanhood as you walked with the top forty-nine beauties of our nation. ,_ iai mim flj :■. 3 1 ' ■' ' a ii ;. w.iA ' mm ..v l : K 2|«M H H gtoi-- : i ' , •■; ' . Not only scholar- ship but personality makes each of these individuals glow with that certain some thing that everyone doesn ' t have. The heights that the student reaches in the areas of intelligence and personal ac- tions cannot be credited to the student alone but also to the guidance from par- ents, teachers, and God. These next pages serve as a tribute to those students who are the sunshine of our lives at Wil- liam Carey College. Elite Mr. and Miss William Carey College Class Favorites Who ' s Who A faculty and administration committee selected to Who ' s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges those who showed academic achieve- ment, leadership ability, and a willing- ness to serve their college and commu- nity. The theatre department pro- vides several productions throughout the year to bring fantasy, drama, and comedy to students. The student affairs office organizes other activities such as, car rallies, concerts, the Miss Carey Pag- eant and entertainment at banquets to add variety to the students busy lives. Talent is plentiful on this small campus and everyone who wishes may have a chance to express him or herself. The laughter, cheers, and applause of the students show their interest and appre- ciation for these bright spots inter- mingled with the usual school work. Ah! This is education with entertainment. Entertainment MISSISSIPPI «usiCI c J Summer Showcase No.1 Encore William Carey College, on its main cam- pus in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, has a very unusual summer theatre program. It is called Carey Summer Showcase and operates as a dinner theatre. The endea- vor has been called south Mississippi ' s unique dinner theatre. Its uniqueness is attributed to several factors. First, in- stead of students paying a fee to partici- pate as is customary in many college summer theatres, each member of the company is paid a stipend. Secondly, the program showcases the writing talents, as well as the performing abilities, of young people. Showcase was begun in 1975. Each of the two seasons to date has featured a new, original musical written by students. The second show each season is a musical revue. In the 1976 company. Jay Rogers and Keith Thompson were responsible for writing the book and lyrics for their new musical, Brass. Thompson also directed the music while Rogers served as costu- mer. In addition, both performed. There are nine student members of the company and three faculty members. With the limited number of persons in the group, those participating receive a wide range of experience, from waiting tables to appearing on stage. Auditions, held in the spring, are open to any per- son who is at least eighteen years of age. Summer Showcase No.2 Brass Halloween Carnival Gales of laughter, spine-tingling screams, and goblins of all kinds dominated the 1976 Halloween Carnival. Fun was had by all as they participated in the club sponsored booths, SGA races, and the theatre ' s haunted house. The haunted house seemed to dominate the evening in its eerie setting of Johnson Hall attic. All goblins, spooks, and monsters along with students had an exciting, thrill-filled time. Talent Show This year ' s talent show was a very enjoy- able time for everyone. Some of the tal- ents displayed were acting, singing, and playing the piano and guitar. The win- ners this year were Keith Thompson, for first place, Tommy Register and Scott Lee tied for second place, and the third place winner was Suzanne Freeman. Cash prizes made winning even more exciting for the leaders. iEk. a£ Thanksgiving Banquet This year ' s Thanksgiving dinner was wel- comed by faculty and students because it was the first all-campus event of its kind for the Carey family. Happy faculty, administration, and staff served students a traditional turkey and dressing feast. Tommy Register, Chuck Endsley, and Keith Thompson provided a musical ac- compainment to a fashion show presented by the Home Economics De- partment. Gwynn Kilgore read the com- mentary on fashions while Billy Brown- ing and Steve Ward escorted the well- dressed fashion models. This prelude to the first class break for 1976 was an enjoyable evening. The holiday spirit brought students, fac- ulty, and staff together for the annual Christmas banquet. While enjoying an extra tasty dinner, students were enter- tained by the stage band, a Miss Cutie Pageant (featuring the male faculty). songs sung by Miss Mississippi, Bobbye Wood, and Dr. Noonkester ' s daughter Lila, and everyone ' s favorites Santa and his wife. The spirit of Christmas soon filled everyone ' s hearts. Christmas Banquet Miss Carey Pageant This year ' s Miss Carey Pageant was ex- cellent. There were nine participants whose talents ranged from dancing, oral reading, singing and piano solos. Miss Carey 1976, Dorothy Roberts was the mistress of ceremonies. Miss Missis- sippi, our own Bobbye Wood, enter- tained the audience. Another important p art of the exciting program was The Carey Company who did a superb job. The winners for this year were: Fern Col- letti, fourth altemate; Mary Ann Ginn, third alternate; Lori Kinnison, second al- ternate; Denise Holloman, first alternate; and Suzanne Freeman, Miss Carey. The Autumn Garden The first production of the Serampore Players for the 1976-77 school year was The Autumn Garden by Lillian Hellman. The three-act drama had an involved plot that kept the audience wondering what would happen next. The plot hinged on the homecoming of a local artist with his wife and the complications that resulted. The cast of twelve presented the 1940 ' s play realistically, and the audience became absorbed with the enticing story. The Butterfly That Blushed The Christmas production presented by the Serampore Players was the sparkling musical fantasy The Butterfly That Blushed by Joseph Golden. The cast, consisting of eight butterflies, an ant, a grasshopper, and two humans, ade- quately exhibited the wonderful mes- sage that it is not how you look on the outside that matters but how you feel on the inside. The cast sang and danced their way into the hearts of the audience. The show truly expressed the warmth and love present in the most wonderful of holiday seasons. Michael Murphy Concert BSD Activities Emerson quoted, March without people and you march into night. With- out friends no one would choose to live because, there is so much more to life than just existing. To love and be loved is the greatest happiness of existence. William Carey College has a com- petitive spirit that shows up not only in academics but the sports arena as well. The striving for achievement is not dampened with a defeat. The never end- ing pulse inside each athlete continues during every game. The administration, faculty, and staff of the college must build a good relationship with each stu- dent so anxiety during exams and occa- sional pressures of classwork will not steer the student from his original goal. At William Carey the atmosphere of good Christian fellowship shines through the actions of the instructors, instilling a sense of encouragement and a renewed thirst for knowledge within the pupil. Teachers may seem misunderstanding and harsh at times, but as far as we are concerned, it is only as they strive for the best in us. We present the faculty and staff of the 1976-1977 school year in hopes that our memories of them will live on as well as the knowledge and as- sistance that we have received from them. Leadership ' .Tr - The Real Adventure of Life A great English doctor and a world fa- mous preacher have declared In word and in deed my challenge to the Carey student in 1977. Wilfred Grenfell wrote: Feeble and devious as my own foot- steps have been since my decision to follow Christ, I believe more than ever that this is the only real adventure of life The decision and the endeavor to follow Christ does for men what nothing else on earth can do for them. A famous preacher used to say he would have been pleased to have blown the bellows for Handel, to have picked up the fallen brush for Michelangelo, to have carried Shakespeare ' s bag. He con- cluded by declaring: If men count it an honor to do some humble service for the world ' s great heroes, what dis- tinction is to be found in the opportunity of serving the Saviour of men. However, we at Carey feel that if you get through registration without flunking you have accomplished quite a task! After registration is over and classes have begun, it becomes clear that, as Carey students, our purpose is not only to put our best into our classes but also to reach out to one another in Christian love. This learning is possible because we see acts of kindness on this campus . . . warm smiles and ready helpfulness shown by the students, as well as the faculty and staff.
