They sought liberty, the built and rebuilt, they sacrificed and served — they gave of themselves Most significant about these men who planted the seed that blossomed into a nation of liberty and justice is that they were the youth of their day. We pay trib- ute to their valor and strength, but some- how overlook that generation ' s youthfulness. What motivated these young men to such acts of valor and sacrifice? Was it the nostalgia of brave rebels in their his- tory? Was it hope of a new and brighter tomorrow? Or was it not instead our forefathers belief in themselves as citi- zens of the present? This year is a time of meaningful rededi- cation to the ideals that inspired these youth of the past. i L y : I i si J 5 ' ' ? b?. - ' ' - ' - As we reflect over two centuries in this Bicentennial ear, we, as free men and women, deserve the luxur of viewing ourselves as important and relevant to our time. • • • • It is only nfjw that w ; have thf; powfrr to (;ff(;( t tomorrf w. ▼.ff In this patriot year, we at William Carey College place attentive consideration on the heritage of our school. We affectionately remember and salute the following men: W.E. Thames, the pioneer educator who founded our college; W.S.F. latum, wealthy lumber- man and campus land donor; W.W. Rivers, our first college president; and Dr. ).L. Johnson, Dr. W.E. Hoi- comb, Dr. I.E. Rouse, and Dr. J. Ralph Noonkester, successive presidents who each worked faithfully to further the development of William Carey College. We recognize their diligent service and the super- fluous yielding of their selves and their resources. iTii iim— 1 Ill iiMi I ' — . t, . ■ 1 V M 1 B 1 ■ • i H n _y 1 K !!S nw !!T JF 9 w ,v ai i f urn DEDICATION If you hear an infectious laugh and a jok- ing voice down the hallway and then come upon a tail, handsome man, chances are you have just run into Dr. Hugh Dickens holding forth in the vice- president ' s office. Dr. Dickens returned to William Carey College the summer of 1973 as Vice President for Development and Director of Graduate Education and Continuing Education. He previously served as Chairman of the Department of Education here before going to Co- lumbia, Mississippi, as Superintendent of the Columbia Separate School District. A truly Christian gentleman in every sense pi the word. Dr. Dickens works masterfully with people in all walks of life from young newly entering freshmen to older graduate students in one of the graduate centers through out the state. A friend of all, he counts among his associ- ates the wealthy and important, but is not impressed with his own importance. DR. HUGH DICKENS When individuals become visible to their fellow students by distinguishing them- selves above and beyond the norm, they are honored by their peers. Whether it be in scholastics, athletics, campus or group leadership, publications, etc., these are the students to whom William Carey College has accorded recognition and well-deserved praise. Everyday, whether we wish it or not, we transmit our values to others or allow those values to fade a little by non-ac- tion. Life is never stagnate; nor can val- ues be. Tomorrow will exist only if we make today count. honors Interior photograph taken in- side the Turner House , by the gracious permission of Mr. James Henry Turner, )r. class favorites I BEAUTIES who ' s who among students in american universities colleges Each year a select number of students are chosen by the faculty and staff members to be recognized for their ex- cellence in academic achievement, their com- petent leadership ability, and their willingness to serve the college and the community. Carey has designed a unique and ample spectrum of collegiate entertain ment to aid in this search. entertainment carey summer showcase— 1 carey summer showcase— 2 The William Carey College Theatre opened a new era with Summer Show- case, 1975. The college theatre was con- verted into a dinner theatre, with a ca- tered buffet. The members of the Showcase company waited tables, as- sisted by members of the faculty and staff and students. Two outstanding shows were presented, each running for two weeks. The first of these was an original musical entitled It ' s Make Believe , with book and lyrics written by Carey students. Jay Rogers and Keith Thompson. Music was com- posed by Keith Thompson. The second production, entitled Get Happy , was a musical revue. It con- sisted of an evening of song and dance from a large number of Broadway musicals. The phenomenal success of Summer Showcase must be credited to the mem- bers of the company, facult , adminis- trators, staff, students, and so man oth- ers. Carey Summer Showcase is now an annual event, thanks to so many people in Hattiesburg who supported and pro- moted it. MEMBERS OF THE COMPASS Director O.L. Michael Homsb Keith Thompson Halloween As a full moon rose slowly in the sky, ghosts and goblins began to make their appearance at the gymnasium. Booths sponsored by various organizations pro- vided food, fun and a chance to vent off a few frustrations on several not-so-willing faculty and staff members who became victims of sponge-throwing stu- dents. Shrieks and screams echoed from the attic of John- son Hall as brave souls put their lives in the hands of the ghouls and witches of the Horror House traditionally sponsored by the Serampore Players. At the stroke of midnight, the ghostly sounds began to die away, not to return until the next Halloween. f j4 i i i 7 • HH H n i talent show Singing, comedy routines and many other talents were displayed at the annual talent show held in Thomas Hall this year. Performers competing for cash prizes gave the audience a refreshing and entertaining break from studying, practicing, and the ev- eryday routine. Competition was close, ending in a first place tie be- tween Cherryl Walter Wilson and Al Fike Richard Strength. Al and Rich- ard sang two Christian folk songs. Cherryl and Walter sang a song made popular by Kris Kristofferson. Do- rothy Roberts took second place by singing a beautiful rendition of Sum- mertime and )ane Reed Lindsey was awarded third prize after her unusual, but comical arrangement of Hunga- rian Rhapsody performed as a pi- ano-kazoo duet. Roger Phillips em- ceed the evening. V ' ' i :h ► B ji I L r I ra l( . 1 It was a cold, crisp, November eve- ning, a delicious traditional Thanks- giving dinner served by happ facult and staff, and good music performed by Tommy Register and compan . These elements all fused to pro ide one of the most joyous occasions of the year as students alread excited about their first holiday break to be- gin the following da , came to the cafeteria en masse. The SGA pro ided the seasonable decorations and mu- sic. Some of the students and facult were attired in bicentennial costumes and were awarded prizes by the Home Economics Club who spon- sored this phase of the event. HOMECOMING HOMECOMING MISS CAREY PAGEANT This year students enjoyed an array of varied activities, consisting of an ex- citing Bicentennial Day, a day for pro- spective students, an Olympics Day, many featured movies and a host of others. The Student Government As- sociation provided these events for our pleasure. jM- g ::3i u Ir ' r 1 u HI WjR B iJ M What makes college life such a wonder- ful and exciting and memorable experi- ence? Certainly it is a combination of elements which, when fused, produce a thought process, an image, which is Carey. Though this is different for each individual, most of the elements are the same. One of these common factors is inter- collegiate sports. Our memories of bas- ketball, baseball and tennis are linked with the roar of a crowd in a packed gym, a warm spring afternoon in the bleachers, a skill under the sun at the courts. Sports is the feeling of excite- ment in groups around you and the strained action of the athletes. It is win- ning and it is losing. For those who watch and those who play, it is excite- ment. It is the hope of victory. It is for us to remember how much has been given. SK ' t- spirit VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM 1 d Mt : _Sp ke ' em g i A- ih i.. Values that have been reinforced by in- structors throughout the history of the college are respect for discipline and in- dustry, a developed sense of responsi- bility, a sense of family, respect and courtesy for others, courage, and a de- sire to accomplish the will of God. Undergirding these values, we believe that one who works with education, stu- dent and educator, must never lose faith in the future. This great faith in the fu- ture, this great faith in God has made this nation one of the greatest on earth. This same strong faith has made William Carey College our college. iTkii guidance THE PRESIDENT AND HIS FAMILY ■z ' . PRESIDENT NOONKESTER Dr. J. Ralph Noonkester and his wife Na- omi left Virginia in 1952 and came to William Carey College to teach and serve. He became dean of students and she became registrar. He brought with him a mantle of proficient leadership, a love of mankind, faith in God and dreams of Christian education. Dr. Noonkester was inaugurated as presi- dent on December 13, 1956. They now have a son, Myron, who is a freshman at Duke University and a daughter, Lila who is a sophomore in high school. Fifteen buildings in fifteen ears is the record Dr. Noonkester established at William Carey followed b the complete renovation of Tatum Court. He has served in outstanding leadership roles in his church, in his communit , among Mississippi Baptists and Southern Bap- tists, in southwide educational groups, in national educational groups, and in hon- orar fraternities for professional educators. He is aware of his indebtedness to God for gifts of life and the opportunitv to use these gifts in Christian education, and grateful to those who ha e contrib- uted in his life, especialK the college, to which he has completeK de oted himself.
