First day of class, end of the nine weeks, finals— graduation. Life is filled with progressions. Every day we experience sequences of events that lead us to other, more important, experiences. Be- cause progress is movement toward a particular goal, each of these progressions keeps us focused on the future. As Carey goes through renovations and development this year, our thoughts are turned back into the past for a view of what Carey has been and at the same time, directed to the future— with hopes of what she will become. In 1911, Mr. W. S. F. Tatum, owner of the land on which Carey now stands, offered it to the Mississippi Baptist Convention for the founding of a Christian girls ' school. Upon organization, the school was named Mississippi Woman ' s College and functioned in this capacity until 1953. ..r- m ' ' ;. i . sm ' imr - TiiP - ■'  ■r3 - 4i«i- K ' v if - ■' ' . J ' ' i iHHiiiSi wnTin ■« «■, ' W ■. ' • i- i At that time, the college became coeducational, and was, in 1954, named William Carey College, in honor of the Father of Modern Missions. Through these years, many students have come to Carey College seeking new ideals, reaching for new goals, and have left— better citizens in a world that needs better citizens, and with a sincere desire to help those they meet in life. At present, Carey College is living up to her name by being a missionary in many areas. As always, she is spreading the good news of Christianity; but now she is doing more in ex- tending her educational ministry to five different sections of the South. Most important, to us, perhaps, is the future of Carey College. As students, faculty, and adminis- tration, we must strive for continual improvement. There must always be progress— that consistent movement toward a goal. Without it, the light would go out. Still, time comes— and is gone— and for students, it goes quickly. Most all of the todays of 1974 are fast becoming yesterdays of last week, last month, and last semester. We might have been too involved with extracurricular activities or we might have put studying at the bottom of our list of priorities, but as exams approach, we dedicate time, energy, and worry to the task. «« SB 3j5 ,  a . Of the good times we had in college— at Carey. We may, indeed, wish at times to turn the world around and let it stop on yesterday. It holds many lifelong friends— those strangers we met on the first day of school. It holds healthy attitudes— molded by experiences. And thus, another school year ends— with all of our lives having been improved as we progressed in 1974— in studies, in love, and in faith. laiher lime ;« j  DEDICATION %s : ' ' ' 26 ' fpas= == Webster defines a professor as one who publicly teaches, in the higher education, any branch of knowledge; one on whom the title has been formally conferred by academic authority. For the students here at Carey, a professor is much more than that. He is not only the person who pours out portions of his knowledge to us each week, but the one, who, in so doing, gives part of himself to us. The pro fessor we honor in the 1974 CRUSADER is such a professor. His concern for his students goes far beyond the realm of the classroom. He does not hesitate to give extra help to the student who sincerely asks for it, and thinks little of his own time when he is needed. He gives willingly of himself, but expects, also, the complete self and involvement of the student. As a student himself, he is dedicated to his area of teaching and strives to create an interest in it for his students. He is many-faceted and does not try to limit either himself or his students. He is an active partici- pant in life, and takes an open mind into every situation. A desire to help students learn is always evident in his class and his methods of teaching are many and varied. To him, learning is not something that takes place only in the cl assroom, but rather a process by which you live each day, each hour. He is a teacher such as Kahlil Gibran describes in THE PROPHET: If [the teacher] is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind. It is to this great professor that we dedicate the 1974 CRUSADER; in honor, appreciation, and love, to you. Dr. David F. TIME AND PROGRESS The philosopher Bergson once declared that the most outstanding event of modern times has been the enlargement of mian ' s body: Telescopes and microscopes have increased the povv ' ers of our eyes; telephones have stretched our ears several thousands of miles; vi ireless has enabled the puniest voice to reverberate round the world; steam and electricity and petrol have enhanced the speed of our feet better than the seven-leagued boots of ancient fableo Gunpov der has given our fists a terrible range and po ver„ Aeroplanes have enabled us to increase our high jump and our long jumip from a matter of yards to thousands of miles. The year 1974 which you have spent at Carey College has undoubt- edly enlarged the powers of your mind and increased the concerns of your heart.
