Dedication Confucius said, Sincerity and truth are the basis of every virtue. Perhaps some of the virtues Confucius had in mind were goodness, gentleness, kindness, love for one ' s fellow man, and concern for the condition of the world in general— qualities especially valuable in someone so much trusted with the development of young minds. Certainly these traits are not present in an individual unless there is first sincerity and truth. The one to whom we dedicate this edition of the CRUSADER has been an able, Christ-like companion to these virtues. We honor you, then, in sincerity and truth, Mrs. Julia O. Loper insriiiiii[iMiii!L@ ICADEMICS yiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii EDITORS Kathy Scott Ray Charles Thomas Charles Ernest President ' s Message There is a fallacy in the image of genius commonly held today. The superior student need not spend long hours of study and drudgery, for, according to the views of many, it is a mark of genius to make good grades without cracking a book, and without systematic, serious study. Your college is a direct denial of this image of genius. William Carey College is named for a Christian statesman whose life, according to his own words, exemplified that ' I can plod. ' Perspiration, a willingness to work and plodding are essential to the Carey College student. Knowledge comes by the sweat of one ' s brain. Character develops by hard struggle. The 1972 Crusader is a worthy reminder of the strong emphasis of your alma mater that in your struggle toward perfection you shall strengthen character and give stability to your ideas. Dr. J. With a good nucleus of thirteen returning lettermen, including four seniors who were members of the 1969 National Champions, things look bright for Coach O ' Keefe ' s 1972 squad. Rebounding from a fine 1971 season of 22 wins against 7 loses, the main problem for this year will be finding replacements for the bat of Jim Smith and the fielding of Junior Broome, who were lost through graduation. Coupled with the loss of several fine players from the previous season, the team as a whole was young and somewhat lacking experience, having only one senior, forward Jim Harris. The Crusader ' s attack this year was spearheaded by guard Tommy Goodson and forwards Russ Harr and Jim Harris.
