D. Sims Business Adviser THIS IS OUR HERITAGE A college is horn-from its small beginning, teachers are added, buildings are con- structed, and the college grows; and so it was with William Carey College in the year of 1906. With more than half a century of growth and maturity to her credit, William Carey College looks to the future with high hopes and undaunted courage. The face, as well as the name of the college, has changed within the last decade. Both academic and living facilities have been added to Tatum Court, Ross Hall, and Johnson Hall. The building program of the last ten years has provided superior facilities demanded by the increase in number and the ability of the Carey students. Today we take for granted many things that have occurred on our campus to make the heritage that we value so much. The ones who planted the trees on our front campus in interesting patterns, the ones who started our May Day activities, the ones who have steered the physical, academic, and christian growth of our college and have given so much of their time and effort for our school: all of these, plus many more, make up a part of our heritage. The dreams of a brighter tomorrow loom on the horizon. We face the future with the hope that, the traditions and heritage of William Carey College may be retained for our pos- terity and that they might further enrich this heritage. By retaining the greatness of the past, we shall be able to face the challenge of the fu- ture. If this is done, the mention of William Carey College will transcend the reputation of the past, and shortly the mention of the college will recall an outstanding institution— an increasingly important and significant Liberal Arts College. Those who have lived at William Carey College have found wealth in its heritage. ' r ■ Yet, William Carey College is like a person. It lives and changes with the passing of time, but the original essence of its personality re- mains unchanged. This everlasting personality is the continuous bond between the past, the present, and the future. Nevertheless, we shall not rest upon the traditions and heritage of the past, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Thomas are carrying on the traditions of Mississippi Baptist leaders as they contribute time, money, and effort to Carey Col- lege and to Christian education. Rather, deriving strength from the past, wc shall look to an even brighter future. CRUSADER DEDICATION 1964 MISS JEWEL HANNAH, BSU Director hi selecting the person to whom this year ' s Crusader is dedicated, we have chosen a person who has been very instrumental in influencing our lives as college students. It is dijjicult indeed for us to express in words our feelings for such a person, one who has given so much of herself and has asked for so little in return. In recognizing her as a truly outstanding administrator and spiritual leader at William Carey College, we also fnd a fne individual whose ideals and principles have helped us to become bet- ter christia72S. Because of all of this and considering her warm personality; the years of her life which she has de- voted to our college; the wholehearted interest she has shown in the lives and well-being of all of the students; her tireless work to lead William Carey to greater heights in the spiritual realm; we respectfully dedicate this small token of appreciation. The ' 64 Crusader, to Miss Jewell Hannah. A friendly chat with Rev. Hamlet. Miss Hannah takes time out to give informa- tion to the Cobbler concerning the BSD activities of the week. Miss Hannah discusses plans for the International houseparty with some of the International students. HERITAGE of ' ' s ' ' K ' ' KK.: ■ ' ' n ai JR ' MIH ik ' -j ' . iqMHHHI 1 1 . H ■ r 1 r H i k. II Ih LEADERSHIP PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE Every academic year may justly be termed a signif- icant and important period in the history of a college. The year 1963-64 is recorded as one of the most impor- tant and meaningful periods in the life of William Carey College. This year has been highlighted by a multitude of accomplishments and challenges in many different areas of the College. A record-breaking building pro- gram brought forth the first new dormitory for women on the campus since 1922. An air-conditioned student center ' was realized following the tragic June fire on the campus. The successful completion of the $700,000 Development Program of 1963 has issued in the com- pletion of plans for the Thomas Fine Arts Center. The year was marked by a record-breaking enroll- ment, an updating of curricula, and a new recognition for scholarly achievements. As you view your 1964 Crusader in the days to come, I trust you will gain a better understanding of the im- portance of the past year in the life of William Carey College and of the opportunities that lie ahead. ROBERT IMMS, Editor of Cobbler COBBLER The Cohhler, published monthly throughout the school year as the official news organ of the student body of William Carey College, was so named because William Carey was a cobbler before becoming the father of modern missions. The staff worked faithfully and patiently to perform the task set before them this year. We began this year with a two-fold goal in mind. We strived, first, to place a newspaper in the hands of every student, faculty member, and visitor affiliated closely with our campus life, and second, to bring before the readers all news, views, and items which would be of interest or of value. If you, the student, have gained any enjoyment or anything of value from the Cohhler this year, we feel that our goal has been accomplished. PAUL JONES, Editor ' 64 Crusader CRUSADER This year the annual staff has attempted to produce a book aimed at giving you a unified picture of William Carey College. This, we hope, has been accomplished. The staff has made an effort to give you a book worthy of Carey. We have found that editing an annual is many things. It is inspiration, vision, achievement, and fulfillment. But, most of all, it is an experience requiring the pa- tience and endurance of the student body. For this cooperation, we are deeply grateful. We hope this year ' s annual has done justice to the past year and will help to bring many pleasant memo- ries of this unique time in our life. 114 KAY WILSON Assistant Editor MARTHA HAWKINS Business Manager ti EURANA CAPPS Organization Editor Mary Hawkins, Faculty Editor; Martha Hawkins, Business Manager; Eurana Capps, Organizations Editor; add their contributions to the Crusader.
