It is with pride that we honor two who have helped spread the light of Christian witness- ing in the home, to the college, to the corrnnunity, and to the foreign mission fields. Their lives have reflected the inner glow that comes from being dedicated Christians. Each in his area of service has brought students and faculty to a closer walk with God. Together they have held high the standards of true Christian education, and their gracious personalities have contributed much to the social life of the campus. We think all young men and women should seek to live and think and be like Christ. We think that those we honor this year have helped challenge us to live the best life. It is to you, Dr. and Mrs. Judson Chastain, that we dedicate the 1962-63 Crusader. Mr f i Mfc ;?!- TRUSTEES Temi Expires 1963: MR, M. F. RAYBURN Meridian MR. PURSER HEWITT Jackson MR. E ROSS Hattiesburg MR CRAWFORD LIPSEY Brookhaven PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE Our school bears the name of a short, slightly stooped, not so handsome, intellectual, God-loving William Carey (1761-1834) of Pauler ' s Pury, England. The life pattern of Carey should be the inspiration for all those who study at the school which bears his name. What were his ideals? Carey was a man of strong will, characterized by steadfastness, perseverance and plodding. He was not afraid of work. He was interested from childhood in the pursuit of knowledge. His thirst for knowledge was coupled with his strong sense of his own deficiencies. Carey was fond of reading. Low type novels and plays disgusted him. Books of science and travel were dear to his soul. Carey was a student of world affairs. He made a PresidenI Noonkosfor and family President, J. Ralph Noonkester map of his world, and as he mused over world conditions, his map became his prayer chart. William Carey was not only a student of the word of God but also of the works of God. With the instinct of a scientist, Carey spent mucn of his time in the hedgerows and meadows observ- ing the wonders of God ' s world. Carey was a devout Christian. However, there was nothing sectarian or bigoted in his make-up. It is evident, therefore, that the ideals of the namesake of our school are lofty ones. As Carey ' s biographer, Basil Miller, said, His career points to the fact that God in the life of a man can achieve the impossible. THE LIGHT OF KNOWLEDGE 14 7 shall light a candle of understanding in thine heart which shall not be put out. The Apocrypha 15 ADMINISTRATION DR CALVIN HUCKABAY Acadevuc Dean DR. Not only does the BSU sponsor de- votional periods, singspirations, and Bible Studies for the students, but it promotes several extension projects. Each Saturday morning the group has a street service in Hatties- burg, and each Saturday afternoon they visit three convales- cent homes to present brief devotional programs. On Mon- day afternoons the ministerial students sponsor jail services. These services and programs keep committee members quite active throughout the school term and promote Christian education in a very positive, personal way. The hght of spirit at Carey shone brightly on several occasions. For example, the Carey qumtet made a good showing in the Holiday Classic at Howard College early in the season as they captured second place in the tournament. The Carey team defeated arch rival Mis- sissippi College and Athens College before falling to host team Howard of Birmingham. However, Homecoming was the highlight of the sea- son. A capacity crowd was thrilled over the 77-63 revenge-victory over visiting Howard. According to statistics, the Crusaders led their op- ponents in every department. Their field goal percent- age was a solid .469 as compared to .417 for their foes. Carey racked up a .757 per cent m free throws as com- pared to .697 for other teams. The locals also scored two more points and grabbed two more rebounds per game than the opposition. They amassed 1500 points during the season which the rivals could not match. We salute the Crusaders for their sportsmanship, then- ability, and their contagious spirit of continuous effort to win. Their enthusiasm and their leadership during sports events serves to supply the necessary ingredient that makes every event a memorable one. The cheerleaders for 1962-1963 have done a wonderful service to the Carey Community. Minnie Louise Haskins OF FAITH Upon graduating, the class of 1963 will step out into the world with the light of faith as a guide. This light of faith has grown steadily during the past four years at Carey. The path light which they are following has grown brighter each year through increased knowl- edge, developed leadership ability, and beauty of spirit. It IS our hope that the light they carry will shine faithfully for future graduates. 91 From Left to Right: Andiew Schottgen. SGA Reprt-sentative; Marion Ingram.
