FOREWORD The shield of the crusader served its purpose in times of old. The shield of today ' s crusader must take on new purposes, new meanings, and new dimen- sions. The shield was, in times of old, a weapon for defense; but it is, today, a symbol of faith, a symbol of courage, a symbol of hope, and a symbol of love. As a symbol of faith, it dispels doubt; as courage, it overcomes fear; as hope, it removes despair; as love, it conquers all. Hold fast your shields. Crusaders! Your shields must guard against poverty and disease; your shields must guard against ignorance and injustice; your shields must guard against greed and avarice; and your shields must guard against prejudice and intolerance. Your shields must stand for the ideals of being an educated person with an humble attitude and inquiring mind; your shields must stand for the ideals of doing the will of God with an unflinching determination and untiring spirit; and your shields must stand for the ideals of serving humanity with a warm heart and unparalleled compassion.
