USADER 1962 John Dell Lindley Editor Sue Bates Assistant Editor Margie Blacklidge Business Manager FOREWORD The shield of the crusader served its purpose in times of old. The shield of today ' s crusader must take on new purposes, new meanings, and new dimen- sions. The shield was, in times of old, a weapon for defense; but it is, today, a symbol of faith, a symbol of courage, a symbol of hope, and a symbol of love. As a symbol of faith, it dispels doubt; as courage, it overcomes fear; as hope, it removes despair; as love, it conquers all. Hold fast your shields. Crusaders! Your shields must guard against poverty and disease; your shields must guard against ignorance and injustice; your shields must guard against greed and avarice; and your shields must guard against prejudice and intolerance. Your shields must stand for the ideals of being an educated person with an humble attitude and inquiring mind; your shields must stand for the ideals of doing the will of God with an unflinching determination and untiring spirit; and your shields must stand for the ideals of serving humanity with a warm heart and unparalleled compassion. The enemies of the modern cru- saders are of a different nature — despair, doubt, fear, ignorance, injustice, greed, avarice, prejudice, and in- tolerance. Through this past year we have been shield- ed from them by HIGH THINKING. Our thoughts were kept high by high ideals and high expectations, by high standards, and by high hopes and high spirits. Through God ' s word we always receive inspiration and guidance as we read Our soul waiteth for the Lord: he is our help and our shield. Psalms 33:20 and Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. We are good citizens as we share in the vic- tories and as we adjust to failures. A. DR. CLARICE ROBINSON There are those who remain backstage when the cur- tains of hfe are pulled and the spot lights burn brightly. There is one in our midst who is such a person. Ac- counting for all the contributions made by her to the total program of education, would not be possible. She has inspired and directed her professional groups. She has always encouraged dedicated scholarship. Her test- ing programs and able counseling have helped many students determine the role they should pursue in life. Through application of accurate management princi- ples, she has been able to contribute to many worth- while publications. Her enthusiasm and interest in the athletic program have been a challenge to us all. The perfection she expects from others and herself leads to finer perform- ances in every way. So to you Dr. Robby we dedicate the 1962 Crusader. THE PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE Dear Graduates of 1962, William Carey College has interested you in the pursuit of knowledge. In your college course you have acquired a knowledge of historical, cultural, eco- nomic, social, psychological and religious facts, theories and problems. We at Carey College have not been interested primarily in the transmission of knowl- edge. We have been interested in the development of your ability to think, to reason critically and independently. Carey College has taught you the art of moral discrimination, ethical restraints and imperative. We have been con- cerned with the development of your appreciations, of your imaginativeness. As a graduate of a Christian college you are to be known for superior personal tastes, for social and aesthetic preferences. Carey College, most of all, has been interested in your philosophy of life, in your spiritual values. My great hope is that you wiU realize the ideals of your Alma Mater. J. On that day, Ruth Meek Sanders, Associate Professor of Social Science, departed this life. Mrs. Sanders had joined the faculty in September, 1956. Since that time, she had taught various courses in history, sociology, and Latin. Hundreds of Carey students had been taught, encouraged, and inspired by this devoted woman. Her teaching career included teaching in public and private schools in Ken- tucky, Ohio, and Illinois. She taught also at Wesleyan College and Senior High, Owensboro, Kentucky, for twenty-four years. She is still remembered and loved at that school and by her former students everywhere. We will long mourn the loss of this fine teacher. 23 THE SHIELD 24 OF LEARNING IN THE CLASSROOM THAT HELPS US TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF OUR TIMES 25 Lett to Right: Jimmy Gray, Ramey Beavers, Peggy Davidson, Marie Fair- cloth, Pat Kerr, and Mary Blakeney.
