IN MEMORY OF: MRS. J. L. JOHNSON Man is endowed with memory, and with this memory, he is able to recall countless moments of pleasure and sadness. Many of the students and friends of William Carey College remember with tender affection and grateful appreciation the numerous visits which Mrs. J. L. Johnson, wife of the former revered president of the college, made to the campus during the last years of her life. With her great husband she made a lasting imprint up- on the college during the early years of the life of the institution, a physical manifes- tation of which is the beautiful straight rows of stately trees laid out in a ch ecker board pattern on the spacious front campus. These trees, straight and true, symbolize the guiding influence of President and Mrs. Johnson . During the visits in her latter years, Mrs. Johnson brought to the campus inspiring stories of the early days of the school . All of her stories were filled with warmth and humor. Mrs. Johnson passed away Tuesday, March 22, 1959, at the Baptist Hospital in Jackson. She had been living with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Purser Hewitt of Jackson . Her absence brings genuine sadness to all Baptists who had learned to appreciate and love her during the eighty years that she lived and worked among us. y
