Dedication We recognize the fact that during this year many people have been helpful to William Carey College and to the staff of the Crusader — too many to be mentioned here. The future of the college appears bright and the hopes of students, faculty, and friends of the college are high. New buildings are being constructed, new faculty members are being employed, and new students are being enlisted. Everything conspires to brighten the glow of the future, At the same time, we recognize the value of the past and of tradition. Without deep roots in our cultural heritage our growth will not be satis- factory nor solid. Perhaps a couplet from Alexander Pope best expresses the feelings of many at this point: Be not the first by whom the new are tried. Nor yet the last to lay the old aside. Having considered both points of view, the staff of the Crusader throws in its lot with those who are emphasizing the future. We dedi- cate this issue of the Crusader, therefore, not to an Individual, but to the Spirit of the Forward Look. innual Sta

7fic Vne ident THREE FREEDOMS Let me call to the attention of all those youthful rrjinds who are striving to keep the torch of eternal freedom ever burning the following excerpt from Never Call Retreat by Jo seph Freemjan: Man is an animial who is miore than an aninjal. He is a creature not only of tooth and claw, reared in the sanguin- ary code of the jungle and still unable to forget it; he also has a soul. He is the only creature on earth who builds the Parthenon, conceives the Ten Commandments, writes Plato ' s Dialogues, erects the cathedral of Chartres, envisions the poetry of Dante, Milton, Shakespeare, and Goethe; com- poses the music of Bach; constructs the railway, the steamship and the airplane; and comjes to grips with the problems of pov- erty, disease and war. He is the only one of all the beasts of the fields, the birds of the air and fish of the sea who has been able to conceive of hunnan justice and divine mercy, and there have been bright moments in history when he has acted on these sublim, e concepts. Yes, that is where your whole mad scheme falls to pieces; you do not understand the creature you want to enslave!. . . . Your failure to see this will be the real cause of your inevitable destruction. The peoples of the earth will rise up against you, not only with the superior might of their mechanical arms; they will crush you by the overwhelm ' ing power of their dreams, for it will be dreams of FREEDOM that will render arms irresistible! It is my concern that each student at William Carey College miay learn: THE FREEDOM OF CONCEPT - a freedomj which enables one to think and reason and formulate one ' s own views. THE FREEDOM OF COMPETITION - a competition, physical as well as mental, which builds strong bodies and minds. THE FREEDOM OF COMRADESHIP - a participation in wholesome social activities which makes one ' s life more abundant.
