Jn W. emotiam On October 9, 1954, when death claimed G. M. Mc Williams, President of the Citizens Bank of Hattiesburg, Carey College lost a long-time friend. For ten years Mr. McWilliams was President of the Board of Trustees. Al- together he served thirty years on the Board and during these years performed services that have helped to make our present progress possible. G. M. McWilliams Miss Patricia Jane (Pat) O ' - Mara, freshman at William Carey College, died on November 15, 1954. Pat was vice-president of the freshman class here at Carey. Her absence from the campus brings genuine sadness to her fellow students and teachers, who had learned to appreciate the friendliness and earnestness she possessed. Harvey Duke Patricia Jane O ' Mara Reverend Harvey Duke was fatally injured in a traffic acci- dent during the fall of 1954. Rev- erend Duke would have graduated in May, 1955. Carey students and faculty miss the inspirational life he lived here on the campus. 10

cJJeclicate tL 1955 to the 1 1 lemoru of l Uilliam i i lam 1761 - 1834 are When God gave William Carey to the modern world he gave a spiritual statesman without a peer. A survey of the biographic facts of Carey suggests the impossibility of exhausting the reasons why William Carey in known as the father of modern missions. In a cobbler shop in Northampton, England, he developed a passion for world mis- sions and led his brethren in a world conquest for Christ by his world-famous sermon in which he said, Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God. As a missionary educator, William Carey founded Serampore College, which was the first Christian College in all of India. Because he was a great linguist, the British governor at Calcutta offered him the professorship of Oriental languages at Fort Wil- liam College. Here Carey spent thirty years gathering a faculty of linguists and pre- paring for his most monumental work, the translation of Scriptures into a multitude of languages. William Carey translated the Scriptures, or parts of the Scriptures, into thirty-four different languages. He produced six grammars and compiled three dic- tionaries and one vocabulary. Carey ' s determination was as steadfast as the purpose of God, yet he was outstand- ingly humble. He chose to be called not Dr. Carey, the professor at Fort William, but the cobbler. He was characterized by a steadfast belief in the value of the individiial and that God intended that all men be free. To that end he sought to give themi the know- ledge of God, that they in their choices might be right.
