REPRESE Tl G QUR SCI-IOGL FORE SIC A D SPELLI 1957 - FORENSIC WINNERS - 1958 Frankie Ware, David Raney, Mrs. Maddox, Sponsorg Ann McHaney, and Patty Milnor. A competitive inter-school program was held within groups leading to state championship and was sponsored by the Forensic League. Frankie Ware was the contestant in girls' prose and David Ranev entered in boys' prose. Ann McHaney represented the school in public speaking, and Patty Milnor was a contestant in the spelling contest. ONE -ACT PLAY FESTIVAL The scene above is from High Window , William Camp- be1l's entry in the One-Act Play Festival held here last March. Six schools from District IV participated in this festival. Amherst H. S., with a distinguished rating, was eligible to enter the state meeting at Charlottesville. TT . ' .1 1Ra.ndy Sowell Virginia Rae Colbert Winner Runner-Up SPELLING REPRESENTATIVES Randy and Virginia Rae won the amiual spelling contest in our school last year and participated in the Campbell County contest held at Rustburg H.S. Participants in this contest, sponsored by the Lynchburg Nga, are from grades 5 through 8.

HO OR WARDS F. F. A. HONORS Paul Gilliam fnear rightj, a senior, was host for the Virginia delegation to the American Institute of Cooperation held at Pennsylvania State College August 22 to 27. He re- presented the Hub Federation of Future Farmers of America. Jimmy Howard, tfar rightp, a senior, also, won the Hub Federation Tractor Driving contest in October, 1958. He was in competition with 18 other people. Q.-pw MQW J. D. Puckette, a junior, was one of William Campbell's top winners in the Lynchburg Farm Show on October 11 and 12. He won two lst places on his cow and 3rd place in fitting and showmanship. He also won 3 lst prizes for his tobacco. -HONOR GRADUATES - 1959 Patty Milnor trighth rankedfirst in the graduating class to be named class Valedictorian and Jenny Lynn Marshall, ranking second, was named Salutatorian for the Commence- ment exercises scheduled to be held June 3 in the school auditorium. Other honor graduates are: Gary Vassar, Eu- nice Fariss, Ann McHaney, Gail Jenks, Lona Jean Asher, Jean Armistead, Doris Roakes. MAGAZINE CAMPA IGN-TOP SAL ESMEN In the Magazine Campaign which was sponsored in No- vember by the S.C.A., the top honors were won by two fresh- men, Tim Connelly ffar leftj and Dabney Williams Cnear leftj. Each sold over S200 worth of magazines, and Dabney outsold Tim by SZ. ' 1- L LA Nan Puckettefrightjadmires the pin which her sister, Joan, a junior, is entitled to wear as a member of Virginia's 4-H All Star Chapter. Joan was selected for this honor in 1958 at the State Short Course held at V. P. I. 74

BOYS' AND GIRLS' STATE -- SIPA BOYS' and GIRLS' STATES REPRESENTATIVES Jimmy Arthur, Eunice Fariss, Jo Ann George, Gary Vassar. On July 13-19, these members of the Junior Class were delegates to Boys' and Girls' State at V. P. I. in Blacksburg, Virginia. The S. C. A., Brookneal Woman's Club, Naruna Ruritan Club, and Brookneal Lions Club sponsored them. AWN' ...ni SIPA RE PRES ENTA TIVES Seated: Polly McDowell, Anne Johnston, Jenny Lynn Marshall, Jean Asher, Gail Jenks. Standing: Betty JO Wingfield, Carroll Ray Hamlette, Jimmy Evans, Tommy Puckett. These students attended the Southern Interscholastic Press Association held at Lexington, Virginia, on April 26-27, 1958. The SIPA, fotmded in 1925, is sponsored by the Lee Memorial Journalism Foundation of Washington and Lee University for the purpose of uniting in a common organization scholastic journalists from the Southern states and the District of Columbia. Delegates to the SIPA have an opportunity to hear men nationally knovnm in their profession, to increase their practical knowledge of journalistic work, and to share their publishing ex- periences with scholastic journalists from other parts of the South. 76
