Since the Very lirst day of school, the uppermost thought in the minds and hearts of the stall has been to present to you. the student body. the best annual possible so that when looking over it in future years you may readily recall the liond memories of your stay at Byrd. Ylith this thought in mind as a challenge and an inspiration we settled down to the long and tedious task before us. The cooperation of the faculty and the students encouraged us to put forth our best etlorts to produce Zl line yearbook. Xlr. Cannaday of The Stone Printing and Xlanulaeturing Co. and Xlr, Cantor of Xlerin Studios both deserve our praise and appreciation. ,Xds were solicited by members of tlfe junior and Senior Classes during the first lew weeks of school. They were instructed beforehand by Xlr. Ahalt concerning their conduct and procedure. Then they were divided into teams of two and sent out on their respective assignments. 'l'he Annual Stall has a bullet supper at our sponsors in the fall of each year and a picnic in the spring, thus uniting pleasure with our Work. The Binxeic SXVAN is a member of the S. 1. l'. .X. and each year sends representatives to the convention in Lexington. For the past two years the annual has received an Honor Award at this Convention. VVQ sincerely hope you enjoy looking at it even half as much as we enjoyed compiling it, for then shall we know our labors were not in vain. The fact that three different types are awarded is a guidance procedure rather than one in which dinerent values are placed on any one type of diploma over another. Students planning to attend college usually work toward a college preparatory diploma. Those specializing in business subjects earn a commercial diploma. Students who take pre-nursing, those who work under our diversified occupations program, and those specializing in home economics, shop and agriculture are awarded a general diploma. Wvhen first we entered lVilliam Byrd in 1947 as eighth graders, the road ahead seemed endlessly long. It was hard to imagine ourselves seniors. That year Henry Plunkett, Elmer Thacker, Gladys Craft, and Faye Hairfield were our leaders. As sophomores, we elected Bobby Schuermann, Regina Boggess, hffaxine Altizer and Rhunelle Wloolfolk to the class OITICCS. Before we realized it, we had completed more than half our journey as we stepped into the role of juniors. Kenneth Shaver, Barbara Moore, Kenneth VVard, Darlene Sim- mons, and Martha Rodgers fulfilled well their duties as class officers. Wlhat a busy year it wasl Remember the fun we had presenting our class play, '4Suzy, under the direction of our sponsors, Mrs. Hood and Mrs. Clary? And we can't forget the Junior-Senior Prom and our share in the Cap and Gown ceremony and Commencement. But at last we have reached the end of our high school road, for we are seniors. How quickly the days have passed. There seemed only half as many hours in a day as there should have been. Our officers were Kenneth Shaver, Kenneth Ward, Rhunelle Wool- folk, Barbara Moore and Nancy Durham. VVhenever we think of these last few months we shall remember those highlights of the yearfpicnic, the commencement exercises, and the trip to New York. May we thank our sponsors, Miss Kelly and lWrs. Reynolds, and all those who have helped to make our senior year such a successful one. Now we begin a new journey into the future, each traveling a separate road. In our memories, the events of these happy years will always remain, and will inspire us to the fulfillment of our ambitions. l l l f 1 iii 30 ill? l 4: Q l i tb nf, K l Black Swan Senior Director FRANK CLIFTON ADAMS: Commercial. VVC were then eighth graders trying to find where we be- longed and to accustom ourselves to a new phase of our lives. Vl'e felt a little lost but knew if we strived hard enough we would reach our goal- graduation. Wie thought we knew everything by the beginning of the next year as we were then freshmen. We were efficiently led by Betty Pedigo, Don Tingler, hlae Lee Uyerstreet, lack Basham and Joyce Young. Our sponsor was Nlr. Thomas. The third year finally arrived and we, as sophomores, were beginning tolike our new life under the leadership of Johnny Sandridge, Don Tingler, Stafford Xleador, Betty Pedigo and Lewis Journell. Our sponsor was Nlrs. Anita Reynolds. Wie started our Junior year with a bang by presenting our class play 'lhfleet Corliss Archerf' Our class this year is composed of S6 members and our leaders are Alohimy Sandridge, George Gearhart, Guy Snow, Charlean Hanes and Shirley Grant. Our sponsors are Xlrs. Clary and Klrs. llood. We are looking forward to our senior year and hope to wear in tlune, 1953, the caps and gowns of our attained rank. .-1 1-.4 11, 33 fs- Fifty-Two I I Juniors TOP RQW, LEFT TO RIGHT: David Altice, foyee Adamf, Rudolph Atkinf, Marlene Altice, Gordon Bryant, foyre Arthur, Fred Cramer SECOND ROW: Shirley Axhby, Donald Darnell, facleie Barr, Norma Bohon, Donald Dunbar, Evelyn Bowling, Fannie Bowyer TI-IIRD Row: Hugh Elliot, Sylvia Bragg, Ten' Brown, Kenneth Ellifon, Dorix Burger, Connie Co-fee, Douglaf Forbes FOURTH Row: Nina Coleman, George Gearhart, Martha Cooper, Patricia Covington, Eugene Gray, Charlean Eanef, Roma Ann Floyd FIFTH Row: Herbert Graff, Barbara Fralin, Pat Giblin, Philip Hutfon, lllerle Gillespie, Martha Goble, Mauriee feter LAST ROW: Shirley Grant, Sherman jonef, Pearl Helmf, Kenneth fournell, Louife Keffler, Louif fournell, fean Kreider -if si 33:- 0 2 n NI J Black Swan Juniors TW 'wa .F Q21 TOP Row, LEFT TO IQIGHTZ Wilnzore Lejell, Loretta Larch, Richard Leftwich, Anna Lucado, Paul lllartin, janif llliller, Richard .Martin SECOND Row: Mable llflorgan, Stajford llleador, Toni Murray, Mae Lee Overftreet, Glenn Miller, Shirley Painter, Ilelen Patxel SFHIRD ROW: Beverly QBudJ Nininger, Nellyce Payne, Kathryn Pearman, jamex Pattifon, Betty Pedigo, Duann Riggle, johnny Sandridge . Mau- made fibers, new products of the chemist's test-tube, have been a major contributor to this textile progress. A small textile producer in 1923, Burlington Mills believed in the future of rayon-an early man-made fiber. In the past 28 years Burlington has become a leader in the development and production of beautiful, durable and high-quality filament, spun and knit synthetic fabrics. From one plant with approximately 200 employees, our Company has grown to include 73 manufacturing plants in 43 communities of eight states and four foreign countries. Employing 34,000 people, Burlington is today the world's largest producer of synthetic fabrics, and it is a recognized leader in the designing, development, research, merchandising and fashion fields as Well as manu- facturing. If you are a young man or woman looking for a place in industry, we think you should consider textiles-and Burlington. It can hold a bright future for the person with the willingness to learn, ability to work, and the natural interest in this fascinating and competitive field.
