ANITA PARKER this, the BLACK SWAN of Nineteen-Fifty Wvilliain Byrd of Xllcstover was known as the Black swing, since he was always innnaculately dressed, usually in black, and because lie was so graceful. lle was a noted author and a capable and influential public official, possessing an unusually large lihrary. The founding of Richmond is attributed to him, for he laid the plans for the city. lt is altogether fitting, therefore, that our school should bear his name and that our yearbook should be called THE BL.-XCK SWAN. Wh1'tz1zo.v'c icfldllfllldfll Public schools in Virginia operate under the Constitution and the school laws enacted by the General Assembly of Yirginia. lt is the function of the Yirginia State Board of Education and the school boards of cities and counties to direct the public schools in accordance with these laws, and with such rules and regula- tions as they find necessary and desirable in providing the best school opportunities for the children of the Commonwealth. The Roanoke County School Board is composed of six members, one member from each of four magisterial districts and an additional member from the Town of Salem and from the Town of Yinton. Regular monthly meetings are held on the second Nlonday night of each month, and such other special meetings as may be necessary are called at other times. At these meetings the Board reviews receipts and expenditures, hears requests and suggestions from patrons and school personnel, determines school policies, and gives general oversight to the school program. These meetings are held in the School Board offices in the County Courthouse at Salem. NIR. PAUL E. AHALT, Principal Roanoke College, B.A. Duke University, NI. Ed. Mr. P. E. xllmlt and Mn. It is these five eventful years that we wish to review in this brief history. It was the fall of 1945 that we began our high school career at William Byrd with 256 in our eighth-grade class. We were under the guidance of Miss Wood and we chose Sue Plunkett, George Bell, Harold Arrington, Paul Anderson as our class officers to help lead us. In our freshman year of 1946 we began to take an interest in the many activities and were recognized as a part of the school. This year our class oliicers were Richard Kidd, Barbara Sink, Helen Thomas and Norma Pattison. Our sponsor for this year was Mrs. Sink. The following year we were no longer considered just students of XVilliam Byrd, we were sophomores. XVe began to work hand in hand with our big brothers and sisters. This year we chose Richard Kidd, George Bell, Bill Conner and Ray Absher as our leaders under the sponsorship of IN'Irs. Shelton. In 1948, we entered Byrd as juniors. Our class officers for this year were George Bell, Bobby hdartin, Norma Pattison and jean INfIcDonald. Our sponsors were lylrs. Hood and lVIrs. Brown. XVe began the year with very hard work on our play, So Very Youngf, In the spring we gave the junior-Senior Prom, after many hours of preparation which also added to the enjoyment of the class. This was followed by the Cap and Gown Cere- mony in which all the juniors took part, eager to be in the shoes of the seniors. Now we are looking back over the most eventful year of our lives, for we have reached the goal of becoming seniors. XVe started the year by electing Bobby lNIartin, president, Connie Goodman, vice president, Betty Underwood, secretary, Lee VVood, treasurer, and Billy Gilmer, reporter, and were under the capable guidance of Nlrs. Sifford and Miss Kelly. To raise money for the senior trip, we sponsored a magazine sale in which Buddy hfitchell was top salesman. We continued throughout the year to raise money for the trip. In December, after much anticipation, we received our rings. Then came spring and the play, IX'Iother is a Freshman. After the play came the junior-Senior Prom, which was a delight to everyone. This was followed by the Cap and Gown Ceremony, Baccalaureate Sermon and Commencement. The trip to New York is one of the biggest events of the year. Iiach Senior works hard to raise the money to finance the trip. As the Senior Class of '50 looks back, we know that we have enjoyed every minute of our high school days, and we hope other classes will have as much success and happiness as we have had through the years. eil 27 lie NINETEEN FIFTY L' liasy on the eyesl'-these two, Good in sports as well as books, Bill and Norma are liketl by all, '1'hat's easy to see-why shucksl This 'lhflost Athletic pair Alnst ask anyone you meet- Best Looking in the Senior Class, When the game is won Best Personality in the Senior Class, Charles Ferguson and Patsy Hucks. POSTON I JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY On September 7, 1946, we, a group of rambunctious little eighth graders came up to join the forces on the hill. We felt somewhat left out then, but we knew that if we kept striving we would soon gain the privileges given to upperclassmen. That year passed well enough with Bill Jones, Elmo VVatson, Barbara Bolling and Betty McDaniel leading us, and with Miss Wood as our sponsor. Then after what seemed ages to us, we became freshmen. Our leaders were Bill Schuermann, Bill Jones, Virginia Scott and Barbara Goggin. VVe had Mr. Thomas as our sponsor that year. We were approaching our goal step by step. The next year we called ourselves sophomores. By that time we felt that we really belonged with the upperclassmen. During our sophomoreyear Mrs. Painter was our sponsor, and our officers were Bill Schuermann, June McGee, Nadine Peters and Pat Myers. It is rather difficult to remember the day when we came scampering up the hill as eighth graders, now that we are juniors. Just think! Only one more year to go. We have an excellent slate of ofhcers. They are: Bill Schuermann, Elmo Watson, Louise Dooley and Melvin Newman. Our sponsors are Mrs. Hood and Mrs. Poston. The out- standing event of the year, so far, was the giving of our Junior Class Play, a Western comedy, The Blundering llerdf' VVe are looking forward to the close of the year, when we shall have an opportunity to help the seniors in Commencement. W'e also look forward with eager anticipation to the Junior-Senior banquet and dance. On this Occasion the seniors will be our guests. With the passing of these events, we shall reach our goal in high school-The Senior Yearl THE BLACK SWAN I I JUNIOR CLASS DONALD :ABBOTT BARBARA ALQORN IIQANIL BASIIAIII iIl'NI'I RAZAIIAM KIIJNIAL BI,IcvINs HAROLD .XRRINcs'I'oN NIARY ,XNN DAVIS l'IIII:IaNIc IDARNICLI, I.oI'IsH 130014-LY DQRIITIIY ICIIIJY KIQNNIHII DIIIJAN .ANN ICTICN BARBARA BoI.I,INcs IIYNDI'lI,L BRYANT CI.AUI:INIs BROVVN JOYCIA: CIIITTIAI CLARI-LNCIC CIIITTIIIII BI':'Ivrv :XNN COAIIQR ,XINIS HIIIRI-IQR NIAVIKIZEN GAR'I'IIlilG1i'l' BARBARA GOIQILIN -INYCIG CSVILLIAIXIS .ICANN I'1ARRIS lBII.L xlolvrcs NINETEEN FIFTY - ,MAL-. Spohror The Hi-Y Club in reality is a part of the Y. M. C. A. put into the school. The purpose ofthe Hi-Y is to Hcreate, maintain and extend throughout the school and community higher standards of Christian character. The platform of the Hi-Y is clean scholarship, clean sportsmanship, clean speech and clean living. The Hi-Y holds its meetings at the Y. Nl. C. A. on tlIe first and third Nlondays of every month. The first part of the meeting is given to business, followed by a prepared program which varies from talks by local ministers to magician shows. After each meeting the Club always goes swimming in the Y pool. Hi-Y work is not restricted to meetings and the school as some may think. One of the biggest and most enjoyable phases of Hi-Y during the year is the Model General Assembly held in Richmond for two days in April. The Club elects delegates to send to this Assembly and pays their registration fee of 510 each from the club treasury. At this Assembly the delegates from the various clubs take the place of Senators and Representatives. They introducte debate and pass or kill the bills which the delegates have drawn up. In addition to all of this a person gets the chance to see Richmond. The Hi-Y Club also plans skating parties, bowling parties, Weiner roasts and various other activities. Klembers of the Hi-Y get the greatest combination in the world: Entertainment and fellow- ship with a Christian atmosphere. To yOu, our friends, we extend our thanks and best wishes. The experience received by the seniors and juniors in the solicitation of these ads will be a benefit to them in the future. ln order to get this valuable experience these students attended a coaching class taught by Nlr. Ahalt. They were given specific instructions on how to approach the businessman, how to sell ads and how to fill out an ad contract. Teams of two each were then assigned certain places to go during school hours. All who attended the class went at least once. Mentbers of the BLACK SWAN staff then carried the work to completion. -il 72 THE BLACK SWAN Salem Pu ACKNQWLEDGMENTS To o11r advertisers, we wish to express o11r appreciation.
