Four years have swiftly passed since the Class ol '36 entered Vinton High School as Freshmen. These four years have been pleasant for us all. When we entered high school in the fall oi nineteen hundred thirty-two, our loyal band, numbering one hundred and sixty-six, started the journey that we had been looking forward to lor some time. Our enthusiasm ran high, and it was with happy hearts that we set out as Freshmen. Doris Hill, Elaine Suzor, Ruth Moore, and Irma Sprouse were chosen class oliicers. The second year was begun with the same enthusiasm as the iirst, although our number had decreased to one hundred and live. We were placed under the super- vision ol Miss Gish. That year Charles Penick, Gary Myers, Juanita Austin, and Maurice Booth were chosen our leaders. Our class was well represented in the activities ol the school. Then came our Junior year. Some history is dull and uninteresting, but to us our Junior history was not. Through the untiring ellorts of Miss Elizabeth Trout, our sponsor, the play, Elopement of Ellen, was a great success. Finally came the ailair of the year, the junior-Senior Banquet, a gala event, when the Seniors departed with happy memories. The year of all yearsmSeniors at lastl How proud were we to lili the vacant chairs left by the Seniors who preceded usl But where was all the dignity and superiority which we thought Seniors always acquired? We couldnt be digniiied. Having proved to be a capable leader, Woodrow Mcllwain was again chosen President ol the class. He was ably assisted by Selma Berry, Frances Cook and Richard Newman. We were very proud to be able to publish the third volume oi the BLACK Swan. The Stahl chosen by the class were as follows: Norris Conrad, Peggy Thierry, Frances Cook, Elizabeth Goode, Irma Sprouse, Davis Weaver, Selma Berry, Hull Fitzpatrick, Dorothy Brown, Kathleen Burt, Eustace Meador, Frances Carter and Elton Gverstreet. Green Stockings, our Senior Class Play, was presented in April, under the excellent direction of Miss Trout. On April 30, 1936, the class was very happy to hold a ceremony in which we dedicated a Kasta Blue Spruce to the school. We were the lirst class to do so, and we hope the Senior Classes of the future will continue this custom. To our teachers, lor their untiring efiorts in our hehall, we wish to express our highest appreciation. They have given to us their time and knowledge, and we hope to repay them some day. N ow that we have reached the summit, we find ourselves ready to go to a new lield, but it is with sad hearts that we say larewell to William Byrd High School. We will always cherish the memories of the happy days spent there. all 18 its Clte Black 5wan+19 l.ast Wi and 'estament We the Class of '36, ol William Byrd Ffigh Sehooi, lieing of sound mind, memory, and under- standing, lint nevertheless mindinl that our lile as a e ass will soon he at an ond, do, on this tliird day ol june, in the year of our Lord one tionsand, nine hunrlred and thirty-six, in the Common- wealth ol Virginia, make, puhlish and declare this to ie our last will and testament, eolleel.ively: We, the Senior Class, do leave to the Juniors our is ignity and quietnes in the study hall.
