Four years have flown by since the Class of ,34 entered Vinton High School as Freshmen. These four years have been very pleasant ones, and we can hardly realize that graduation is so near. When our group of 160 boys and girls entered high school, in IQ3O, we looked upon the upper classmen with awe, but it was not very long before we found them to be our friends. Richard Simmons was elected president of our class, with Estelle Foutz, Herman Scott, and XVilliam lvlarshall filling the other oflices. High school was a new adventure for us this year and was not so event- ful for our class. As we entered school in '31 as Sophomores, our class had diminished to 94. This year William Nlarshall was chosen to lead the class, and was ably assisted by Herman Scott, Virginia Nunley, and YVilson Adkins. Our class was well represented in both the athletic and literary activities of the school. The class celebrated Hallowelen with a party on October 29th. Before we realized it we were Juniors. Only 69 of our class were together when we entered school in the fall. Herbert Taylor, Elizabeth Sprouse, Dorothy Horn, and Constance Compton were elected class officers. Through the untiring efforts of Miss Berta Hartman, our faculty advisor, our play, Girl Shy, was a huge success. On April 8th the Junior Class was given a party at the home of Elizabeth YVilliamson. The Junior-Senior reception was the biggest event of the year and we suddenly realized that we must fill the place of Seniors next year. Wilson Adkins was elected president of the Senior Class with Kenneth Moore, Dorothy Horn, and Hazel VVright to assist him. At a Senior Class meeting, Nlr. Horn agreed to personally supervise the editing of the annual. The name of the annual was changed from Roacovin to The Black Swan. The Seniors elected to the annual staff were Herbert Taylor, 'Wil- liam lvlarshall, Constance Compton, Elizabeth Sprouse, Lydia Ringsmuth, Nell Short, and James Beard. W'e are proud indeed to be the first class to graduate from the new VVilliarn Byrd High School. Seniors! The last year of our school life is almost over. Graduation is close by and it is with sad hearts that we say good-bye to our pleasant days together in Vinton High School. Itls marvelous! Yesterday, my day off, I was casually glancing through the latest edition of W'l1a'.v Who, published by the Vinton Publishing Company, and is most capably edited by Herbert Taylor. Seeing this, I became very much interested and fervently turned the pages, seeking the fate of other members of our class. On the very hrst page I came upon the name of one of the most promising graduates of Yvilliam Byrd Hi--Randolph Abell, after whose name was so many degrees I fairly swooned. Incidentally, he is professor of law at the Harvard Law School at a very tender age. Perusing the pages further, I saw the name of our Class President, lfVilson Adkins, printed in very bold type. He has made quite an enviable place in the baseball world, being the newly appointed manager of the New York Giants. Athletics, by the way, brings to mind a newspaper clipping I have in my collection concerning Garland Beard, whose movie name is John Barryless. He is to be co-starred with Dorothy Schwartz in the current picture, L'Tarzan, the Uutameclf, Delving deeper into the mysteries of W'lzo'r Hfflll, the name of Alfred Burt leaped from the pages with abrupt force and, as my vision cleared, I learned he was conducting the recently organized Roanoke Philharmonic Orchestra. Harold NIcDaniel was a recent patient here for a minor throat operation and has returned to the Mfetropolitan Opera Company. The day he was discharged he gave me a ticket to a matinee of last week and as a pleasant coincidence, Lorraine Testerman appeared as a special surprise and rendered an interpretive dance. Surely you remember the dance she did in Piekles.'l The owner of the opera house is Charles Gearhart. Progressing onward through the pages I came upon the name of Posy Saul, who, because of his slight stature and genius for money-making, has been dubbed '4The Napoleon of Finance. Did you see in the newspaper the write-up given i'Si Sisler and Francis Falls? How Swanson NIcAllister, a scout for Herman Scott's Follies, discovered them dancing in a third-rate chorus, and, realizing their extraordinary talent, he has given them a long-term contract and placed their names in lights on Broadway. Connie, did you recognize the two girls whose pictures appeared on the cover of the April DICCIIIZJ? IVhy, they were hlargaret Crowder and NIary Shull. They were simply gorgeous in the dinner gowns designed by Lois Fisher. I attended the Easter dances at Duke University and was happily surprised at the popularity of hVilliam Nlarshall as Professor of Physics and Zonie Compton conducting classes in public speaking. 'I'hey're surely making good. You, of course, read of the brilliant coaching of the varsity football team by Walter Pollard and his being rated equally with Kuute Rockne and Kenneth hdoore. Practically all members have taken part either directly or indirectly in one or more of the plays. This year Work was concentrated mostly on one-act plays. This was to insure a Wider scope of training in public speaking. At several of its meetings the Dramatic Club studied the art of make- up, which has brought more realism into their stage scenery. In the meantime, the social side of the organization was not neglected. In November a party was given in the Junior High School Auditorium. One evening, after the plays in April, Nlrs. Snider entertained the casts at her home. Later in the spring a picnic was given by the club. The club presented a play, In the Emperofs Garden, as entertain- ment for a meeting of the P. T. A. In April, the Dramatic Club gave its annual program by presenting three one-act plays, Elmer, Dust ofthe Road, and Thanks Awfullyf' An assembly program of dramatic read- ings Was also given. In lVlay, the club presented again the comedy, Elmer, for the Roa- noke County teachers' meeting at Salem. On Nlay 11th, Dust of the Road was presented at Charlottesville, in the Virginia Literary and Athletic League Nleet. Grandma Pulls the Strings, a comedy, Was given at the Junior- Senior reception. A drama, Travis, and a group of short comedies will complete a very successful year for the Dramatic Club. -13417 life Clie Black XJyJXJgJXjLJXJg, Swau+19 4 x j1:1X:JiJi:JqlX:1iJg- xx' A A fx jg A JL Jk 1 Jg1x:Jxl1x:1y:JxjJg'Jx J P1 e.v1rIc11.t ..... The first was a program at Christmas consisting of a one-act musical play and a sacred cantata. The second and largest of the undertakings was the annual operetta given in the spring. Because of the combination of musical, speaking, and dramatic parts, which require long and diligent practice, only a few programs can be con- sidered during the school year. These programs are under the direction of Nlrs. Horn whose superb operettas have added greatly to the pleasure of our commencement exercises. Also, during the spring a piano concert was sponsored by the Glee Club. Nlr. Harold Lawrence, a widely known master of the keys, entertained the audience. The operetta chosen this year was Once in a Blue Moon, with music by Noble Cain. This was one of the most elaborate operettas yet at- tempted by the Glee Club. There were five different choruses, each com- posed of about iifteen or more individuals. Including the attendants to the Nloon Lady and all extra participants there were about one hundred boys and girls in the choruses. ' The cast of the operetta was a very able and talented one. Constance Compton, Virginia Nunley, and Harold NIcDaniel were the most ex- perienced, while Kathleen Settles, Herbert Taylor, Fountain Chapman, Geraldine Nlontgomery, Francis Hunt, Elsie Higgins, Lavonia McCraw, Jesse Kaylor, Richard Newman, Virginia Firestone, and Gray Newman were those appearing for the first time in one of the operettas. hflr. Boyd Powell again directed a ten-piece orchestra which added greatly to the success of the operetta. ai 49 is- Swatv 19 4 Jxtzy 1g Jy JY jg jk TJ! 1L'JY'Jx 1L11k'JX J Director .... President ........ From the number of musicians in school a very accomplished group was selected. Both boys and girls were chosen for this group which included about forty-four members. The different pieces Were II trumpets, 2 baritones, 3 saxophones, 3 altos, 3 drums, 6 trombones, and I6 clarinets. Cn January 13th, the band made its formal debut. This was the night of the dedication of our gymnasium. The members of the band, clad in attractive uni- forms of maroon and orange, made a splendid appearance which supplied a bit of color to such a memorable occasion. The uniforms were provided through the industry of our principal, assistant principal, and the help from friends of the school. The band Went to Roanoke on January 26th to play at a Red Cross meeting held in the Elks Club. ' What would a circus be without a band? The band contributed the finishing touches for the circus held in our high school auditorium. The WVilliam Byrd band vied for honors with the 116th Infantry band in a concert given in the school on February I5tl'1. In hflarch, the band journeyed to Pulaski to provide entertainment at the District I teachers' meeting. The band gained more popularity with the teachers by playing before a meeting of the Roanoke City teachers. Two concerts were rendered at the Junior League meeting in Salem. They were received with much approval. These concerts were conducted by lVIr. W. I-I. Nliller, faculty member. The band was organized too late for our football season, but it came forth with flying colors at the District VII track meet held at Leggett Field. The high school band has been a welcome addition to the educational facilities of our school. Other schools in this vicinity have looked more or less envious as our band would pass by. In the near future We believe it will be among the leading high school bands of the state. Next year a larger and more elaborate program has been planned for our band. IVe are greatly indebted to those who have made the band a success. -sf 51 E+' 'Che Black xJxJX1xJxJyJxJx- X1A:A1A:A:A:A:A:AvA Svvatv 19 4 A-A fx A A fy fx 1 1x:Jx-J yzzxj 1x:Jx:Jg'JX:1 Prexident. . . , . . At the opening of the season Coach Ahalt had a practically inexperienced squad to Work with. Nevertheless, he sent onto the field a scrappy, determined, and spirited team, intent on victory. Under his splendid coaching and the cooperation of our team a schedule was completed with seven games played and seven games won. The team was ably directed by Captain James Beard who-did his part in carry- ing the pigskin from the fullback position. Besides backing up the line he was expert at punting and passing. Beard was assisted from the halfback positions by Dent and Kaylor who did no small part of the line-smashing. The elusive quarter- back Was none other than Herman Scott. After calling signals he smuggled the pigskin across on end runs. Dent, Kaylor, and Scott combined to make the way clear for our smashing fullback. Hunt substituted at halfback. The center position was taken care of by the diminutive Whitmire. He was little but loud on the football field. Howard Hale and Chapman were our stellar guards with Booth keeping up the good work when Hale lost out. 'When it came to hitting hard and low Hassell Hale and the renowned Nooky Falls hlled the bill. V The end positions were filled by lVIoore and Pollard Whose alertness saved many plays for old alma mater. The season opened with the Terriers opposing Glass Hi, of Lynchburg. The final whistle found the score 7-6 in Vintonis favor. At Nlartinsville, we were again victorious, Winning by a score of 7-6. The team, visiting Radford on their Home-Coming Day, spoiled their fun by snatching a 7-o victory. But Lane Hi, of Charlottesville, visiting us on our Home- Coming Day, experienced no such good luck. The Terriers climaxed a successful day with a 7-o win, and also avenged an old score with the Charlottesville lads. The big game of the season-Jefferson Hi!! The Terriers', continued their good Work, ringing up a I3-7 victory over the Nlagicians.'? In this game seven seniors completed their high school football career. They were Beard, Chapman, Dent, Falls, hfloore, Scott, and Pollard. SCHEDULE Vinton. . . .... September 30th .... .... L ynchburg. Vinton October 13th. .. lX4art,insville Vinton October Sloth. . . Captain Bubbie Pollard, at forward, scintillated during the entire season. Scott, also at forward, was the feature of the season with his accurate shooting. lVIoore, playing center, put up a brilliant game at all times. Beard's remarkable offensive Work brought victory on many occasions. Dent, fast guard and excellent shot, did much to bring the team to the front. This year's reserves, Whitmire, Booth, Lassiter, Smith, and Thrasher, promise a good quint for next year. SCHEDULE Vinton ....,.. Vinton ....... Vinton ....... Vinton. . . Vinton .......
