EAGER TRAVIS SENIORS wait for their long-expected class rings. Autumn Activities Spur Spirit The opening of school proves exciting for seniors, juniors, and sophomores. Seniors re- ceive their class rings, sophomores adjust to school, and juniors seem to be doing many things. Travis students participate in pep rallies, football games, and various other activities dur- ing the opening weeks of school. CHARGEI!! Monroe Boyd, John Eastty, David Kluck• holm, Wayne Terry, and Frank Dillard help generate school spirit with their unique instrument. m Jane Wolff Their vim and vigor urge Travis’ team to victory— Their lusty yells fill every silence— They are the Wm. B. Travis Cheer- leaders—the essence of school spirit. They have worked so that their enthusiasm might direct our cheers with precision and fervor. During the first period of the day, you can catch a glimpse of the never- tiring cheerleaders at work on decorating the halls or some device to create a spark of enthusiasm in the hearts of their fellow classmates. The cheerleaders constitute the back- bone of school spirit. Cheerleaders THE STUDENT BODY follows tradition by raising hands at the closing of “Rebels True.' Pep Rallies Stimulate Rebel A PORTION OF THE VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM occupies its usual place at the The assembly bell rings, and Travis students rush to the gym to find a suitable place to sit. As the students approach the gym, they can hear the beginning strains of “Dixie.” After they settle into place, seven enthusiastic cheerleaders burst upon the scene and begin to lead the student body in roof-raising yells. The Hebei Band and majorettes perform, and Coach Myers gives an inspiring pep talk to the students. At the close of the pep rally, the football players stand behind the cheerleaders, all lock fingers, and raise hands higher and higher on the last stanza of “Rebels True.” Enthusiasm pep rally. The notes of the Victory Bell are sounded once a year by the winners of the game. The winning team and their coaches are the first to ring the bell. Then members of the winning side are allowed to ring the bell. RIVAL EDITORS Carolyn Barkley and Pat Willson polish the Victory Bell before the Travis vs. McCallum football game. 22 Winners of the Color Week contest sponsored by the Publications Department of Win. William B. Travis High School 1211 EAST OLTORF STREET AUSTIN A. TEXAS WM. A. S LOAN, PRINCIPAL Dear Seniors: November 27, 1962 The time that you have spent at Wm. B. Travis High School has been very enjoyable for the faculty. We see in this class a number of very outstanding individuals and as a group you are as fine as any we have had to graduate from Wm. B. Travis. I would urge that as you graduate and continue either in college or vocational or technical training or directly into employment that you maintain a desire for further education and that you become a more effective individual not only in your life's work but as a responsible citizen of the United States. Citizenship is something that we all take for granted; however, it should be something that all of us cherish. We should learn the fine points of citizenship, how we can take part in our government, how we can learn to understand and respect our government. It is only through keeping ourselves well informed that we can do this. Always find out the facts and make up your own minds in things concerning government. It is very easy for us to repeat things that we have heard others say concerning government without ever doing any thinking of our own. This is a dangerous thing. Be well informed then reach your own decisions. We have many problems facing us as a people in this day and age but they are probably no more serious to us than problems have been to peoples of the past. We must learn to solve the problems and look to the future with enthusiasm and optimism. We do have a bright future. It is up to us to make the most of it. We can do this by taking an active part in things around us, being anxious to serve as well as to be served, and to be willing to pay for those things that are worth while. We wish the best for each of you as you leave us. Mr. W. A. Sloan 1‘ruui ial. U illuim H. Trant llifh Silrnul 187 Mr. Barnes Milam Vice-Princi xil Mr. Milam is also the Dean of Boys at Travis.
