It was held at the church because the pavilion was being redecorated; however, it was held there for the last time because next year the administration has decreed all school dances, except the Prom, will be held in the school. Over 50 couples turned out and turned on the music of Starbound , and all appeared to enjoy themselves. Sponsors this year were Mr. and Mrs. Meneakis, Mr. Moss, Mr. Rogers and Mr. Oppman. Chairman of the dance Mary Ann Pickford. A sincere 'thank you' to all. 39 PERS Side 54-52 in two exciting games in the famous Cracker Box. This year's team was made up of primarily under-classmen, who made a fantastic showing. Once again this year, the team took second at the Gary meet. Each year the score gets closer. Look out West Side! Ed Buckley Homer Farley Billy Steele Victor Rodriguez Daniel James Ken McDonald Ron Rushing Bill Wagner Charles Gillette Gregory Kemp Another victory for Wirt! WIRT WRESTLING This year's wrestling did not produce any sectional winners for Coach Hayes, but was a satisfactory one any way. Overall our record was 2 wins and 4 losses, but the wins came at the expense of city rivals, Emerson and the Veit. Losses were to Crown Point, Lew Wallace, West Side, and Lake Station. In the Crown Point Tourney, Wirt was 10th in a field of 16. In the Northwest Conference, Wirt placed 3rd. Greg Kemp, Ed Buckley, and Phil Rogers wound up as city champions. Ed Buckley was voted the outstanding wrestler at the Wirt triple-dual match. Later he was elected the most valuable man in the Hobart Invitational. Congratulations Ed! Finally, let's not forget the coaching staff headed up by Big Dave Hayes, the head coach. Many thanks also to Coach Johanson and a special thanks to Coach Rogers and the staff that supervised the sectional meet. 49 A winning smile from a winning wrestler: Senior Phil Rogers BOY'S DRILL TEAM Front: Theodore Magwood, Lamar Burr, General Harry Walton, John Hill, and Anthony Hall. Tom Huse and Doug Harris are two of the promising underclassmen on this year's team. Last year's team, under the direction of Coach McDonald, won the Northwest Conference Tournament, defeating Lew Wallace by twenty-four strokes. The team's dual meet record was ten wins and four losses. Jim Hoggard was the medalist at the tournament. HISTORY These years have been of great meaning for many of us During the course of our last year, we watched a new principal, assistant principal, and dean assume their roles among us We said good-bye to numerous old rules and hello to countless new ones. One of the most important things is that we no longer look up to our fellow classmates, but we are the ones being admired. We set many precedents this year. For the first time, the Seniors did not receive the spirit award Instead, the Freshmen took our long awaited possession. However, we did take first place with our float entitled, Brand m Indians.’ We were categorized as the sickest class in attendance, losing out to the Juniors. In spite of this, we conducted ourselves in a very mannerly and scholarly way. As for sales, the Seniors should not make a career of it For the first time in Wirt history, the citrus fruit sale was a flop We didn’t seem to have the ambition to sell those darling, little Trooper hats, ordered at the beginning of our Junior year. We couldn't even sell hats left to us from the previous Senior class. One of our better assets was sports For the first time in our four years, we beat Andrean, thus placing us in the Top Ten State standings. Several of our fellow classmates dominated the sports along with the newspaper headlines. Also, we had our first mascot known as Troopy . Along with the many other changes was that of our class officers. John Boyden had been our President for three consecutive years, but Todd Robbins took over in our final year. We had an outstanding Snowball made possible by the band Starbound and the 1981 Yearbook Staff. It was a success and everyone enjoyed it Moving back a year to when we were Juniors, we can recall a time of great productivity and participation Academically, we did well. Many enrolled in History A.P., and all had to write the required term paper for English class. At the beginning of the year, we took the P S.A T., and in May we took the S A T. for our very first time. It was definitely a year for having first-time events. We were the first class to sponsor a talent show. We held the “King Queen at St. Mary's Hall for the first time, and it was the first time to have a D.J. at this dance. It was the first time out of our four year history that Wirt won the homecoming football game, in which we beat River Forest 10-0. It was also a year of smaller, but just as important, achievements. Our diver, Mike Scheerer, went down State, while Ed Buckley became our top wrestler. As for Senior Honor Society, it was the smallest group of inductees ever. Moving back even more, we touch upon our Sophomore year. We were finally moving up at Wirt High School, no longer little Freshmen. Discipline was a major issue that year, along with the new Behavior Modification Clinic. Our homecoming float, If There’s a Will, There's a Way, was almost disqualified for ditching to complete it, but it came in second. We learned the Cornell 2-6-2 from Mr. Cozza, and it was the first year for soccer and a fashion show. Finally, we recall our Freshman year when we first entered Wm. A. Wirt traditionally by being dunked in the snow. We were noted as being the first class to used the new swimming pool and were promised to be ’’first to graduated in the new auditorium. The most successful fund-raiser was our car wash. As we part, each going our individual ways, we will be able to look back upon these as a once-in-a-lifetime experience only to be confronted by new beginnings. Best wishes. Seniors! WRIGHT SAM YAU in Well, the school year is finally over and in spite of many delays and changes, we've made it. The first big change, of course, was the new administration, which gave our book its sub-title NEW BEGINNINGS . Along with the changes at the top, came the change in the method of selling the book and the projects we had to help finance it. Next year there will be more changes; a new advisor, a new photographer, and possibly a new publisher. To the staff; well, guys; we made it. Mike and I would like to thank each of you personally for sticking it out. We are both sure that only the staff appreciates the efforts it took. Three pictures days and late deliveries were our principal source of aggravation, with inflation and costs running a close second. Because of prices we had to trim the size of the book to 112 pages, but we hope you like it anyway. We would like to give an extra thanks to Nancy and Sylvia for their SENIOR section and all of the extra work that they did. We realize the frustrations and the delays you went through before we said FINIS to the book. Thanks also to George Kingsley, the HerfF Jones representative; and to Mike Crim, our photographer from Indiana School Pictures. Most of all we would like to thank Mr. Nick for being our friend, teacher, and sponsor. We truly appreciate his sincere efforts to produce a fine book. Of course, we can't forget his wife, Mary, either. She was the one who had to put up with his many and frequent absences for yearbook pictures, dances, etc. for the past thirty years. It is time for us, as well as him, to say 30 .
