Wind, whistling through the trees and churning the water in waves that seem to end on the shore, but keep returning. White caps joyfully bobbing up and down among the buoys. Grayfish are swept upon the beach by the overpowering waves, crawling back to the water, fighting to find a way in; and again are swept onto shore. The sea gulls not flying; not flying by themselves but gliding on wind currents. Some, though, try to fly out over the water, barely making it, always being pushed around like a single leaf; floating aimlessly in the wind. Nature's life fighting a never ending battle to live and let live. Kim Coveil 11 FACES PLACES (JMkti s Flying high, flying free, That's the way I want to be. Kim Covell SENIOR HISTORY As of June 7, 1979, we officially became the new senior class. It took us three years to finally achieve the status of upperclassmen, and the following is our story. As freshmen, we had an outstanding year. High school was a little intimidating at first, but it didn't take us long to settle into our roles as freshmen. By the time school began, we had already formed a large group and begun work on our Homecoming float, which was built at Karen Turnipseed's house. The football team lost the game to the Griffith Panthers, 0-14, but our class came out on top with a first place award for our float, Troopers Will Shine. We were really pleased with the results of our first group effort. However, the annual Homecoming celebration was only a small part of our experiences as freshmen. As a group, our class held a very successful paper drive. On an individual basis, though, we eagerly attended games, parties, and our first big dance, the Snowball. Our class had the distinction of experiencing several significant first and last events at Wirt High School. For the first time ever, students were allowed to attend the King and Queen singly during the year we were freshmen; this was also the last year that G.A.A. would exist at Wirt. Even though we held the lowest status of the underclassmen at Wirt, we enjoyed our introduction to high school life. Our sophomore year at Wirt began uneventfully, but at least we were accustomed to the routines of the school. It was a welcome change as sophomores not to be the youngest people in the school anymore; we remarked among ourselves that the incoming freshmen seemed smaller and younger-looking than we ever had. Our Homecoming as sophomores was hardly as successful as it had been the previous year. Not only did the football team lose the game to the River Forest Ingots, 6-12, but we took last place for our float, Bury 'Em Alive. The float, which consisted of an Ingot player lying in a casket, was built at Debbie Balas' house. The first significant change our class witnessed at Wirt was the completion of the swimming pool. Swimming became an accepted part of our gym classes, which for the first time became coeducational. As sophomores, we were the first class that was required to take a speech class, as well as the Basic Proficiency tests in writing, math, reading, and speech. Also during our sophomore year, a soccer team was formed, and members of our class performed in the play, 1984. Toward the final part of the year, driver's licenses and letter jackets began to show up throughout our class. Our junior year was one of our best years. Our new abundance of driver's licenses and cars made going out for lunch one of our favorite pastimes. Wirt played the Andrean 59ers for Homecoming; even though we had plenty of spirit, we lost the game, 34-6. We juniors had a few Homecoming victories of our own to help compensate for the loss of the game, though. We won first place for hall decorating, second place for spirit, and once again, we won first place for our float, Zap 'Em! featuring Willy Wizard. It was built at Roger Kaufman's house. As juniors, we were some of the busiest people in the school. All of us wrote term papers for our English classes, many of us had part-time jobs after school, and some of us added the rigors of History AP to our busy schedules of other high school activities. As a class, we raised money by selling candy and by sponsoring the 1979 King and Queen, Heaven Tonite. We took PSAT's and did well on them; a large number of us were inducted into the Honor Society that year, also. One unique event that occurred during our junior year was the Blizzard of '79. This heavy snowfall kept us out of school for one week following the week of our return from the holiday break. We witnessed the beginning of the construction of the new auditorium, and we ended our junior with our anticipation of becoming seniors. We eagerly assumed our roles as seniors, finally enjoying the status of upperclassmen. Our senior year was off to a good start with first place awards for hall decorating and spirit during Homecoming week. For the third time in our history, we won first place for our float. This year's theme, Winning Is a Snap, was depicted by a large replica of a camera; the float was built at Lisa Salerno's house. Our senior year was highlighted by an event which had not occurred in Wirt's history for the previous twelve years—our football team won the annual Homecoming game. They played the River Forest Ingots, with a final score of 10-0. In our senior year, we sold citrus, candy and knit caps to raise money. We formed committees to plan the Prom, we tried to keep our grades up, and we took SAT's. We looked forward to graduating and we made plans for what we would do after high school. In the meantime, we had a lot of fun ... at this year's Snowball, Ice Castles ... on weekends ... at football and basketball games ... at parties ... at clubs and other school activities . . . with our friends. Good luck, seniors! Celeste Debbie 107 SENIOR ACTIVITIES JENNIFER LEE ANDREACHI K Q Comm. 3 MARY L. The eagle was used as a way of carrying out the effect I wanted to get across. The artwork and the poems were done by Kim Coveil. With her creativeness and talent, she was able to capture my ideas and put them on paper. Karen Grata also did a great deal of artwork for nearly every page, which made the book come alive. Creativity was the major part of producing this book Every year you try to come up with new ideas, and that's exactly what this book did. Although not everyone will be as satisfied with the contents of this yearbook as the staff of 1980 is, I would like to say, considering the cost, limited time, patience, and most of all, the pressure that we all faced during the production of this yearbook, we did the best we could. Hundreds of dollars were lost because of the lack of sales of last year's book and this year's Snowball. Unfortunately, as a result of this, there may not even be a yearbook next year; and if there is, the size will be decreased and the price will most likely increase. We cut down the number of books to be produced this year from 500 to 400 and I hope that we sell all of them. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the staff of 1980, and to Mr. Meneakis. Mr. Meneakis was our advisor photographer; but most of all, our friend. If not for him, there wouldn't have been a yearbook. My best wishes to the staff of 1981 and to the editor, (still unknown at this point). All the advice I can offer is to stick with your ideas, no matter what they may be, and most important, always feel your sense of accomplishment and be proud of your book. Keep dreaming those dreams and make them come true. So long to the year 1979 and on to a new decade! Best wishes to all. C LaUMAj 7L.. Lucy Ann Cauchon 1980 Editor 144 Editorial
