THE WAY WE WERE by Marvin Hamlisch Aian and Marilyn Bergman Memories light the corners of my mind. Misty watercolor mem-Vies of the way we were. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind, smiles we gave to one another for the way we were. Can it be that it was all, so simple then, or has time rewritten ev-Vy line? « to do it all again Could we? Mem-'ries may be beautiful, and yet, what's too painful to remember, we simply choose to forget. Throughout the Homecoming week, all the classes enjoyed competing for the spirit aw rd. Hall decorations, dress-up days, secret Willy and Wilma, the hidden football, and window painting all made the week a complete success. Seniors were triumphant in getting the spirit award. YEA SENIORS! The junior's Zap Em took 1st in float. Freshmen were triumphant in both the pie-eating contest and the 3-legged race. Eileen, a senior, won the tricycle race. The sack race was won by the sophomores. Even though we lost the game against Andrean, we had a good turnout and all enjoyed it. The game was followed by a Homecoming dance in the gym. It too was a success. On DRESS UP DAYS the Wirt student body dressed up as: wizards, graduates, football players, children, and sophisticates. Throughout the week we also celebrated: HAT AND BUBBLE DAY, BALLOON DAY, TIE DAY, AND AND INSIDE-OUT DAY. DRESS UP DAYS HALLOWEEN 30 October 31 was an enjoyable day for everybody as Wirt acquired some rather strange-looking students. Among them were a life-sized pumpkin, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Raggedy Ann and Andy, two preschoolers, several co-ed football players, a clown, and lots of others who were camera-shy. WINTER MEMORIES WINTER MEMORIES WINTER M 38 EMORIES WINTER MEMORIES WINTER MEMORIES Charles Stallings Kris Wheaton and Edward Coleman Lorelle Brown LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING Lift every voice and sing till Earth and Heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty. And let our rejoicing rise high as the listening skies. And let it resound as loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of faith that the dark past has taught us. Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us. Facing the rising sun of our new day begun. Let us march on till victory is won. The class was large, containing over 300 students, and the new class possessed dignity and potential. As freshmen, we, the members of the class of 79, were slightly intimidated by the upperclassmen, who seemed to be everything we ever aspired to be. Still, our class showed high self-esteem even though we were the youngest class around. In our first September here, we made plans for the homecoming by constructing our freshman float, Tony the Tiger. Our slogan was Troopers are Grrreat! The float, constructed at the home of fellowclassmate Ricky Sears, received a third place in the contest. We received a fourth place for class spirit. The sophomore year was something special to us all. We had at long last captured seniority. No longer freshmen, we began to assume the roles of the Wirt teenager. We attended dances, parties, games and the general carefree feelings of high school grasped us all. We were growing up. The guys and girls started lettering in sports and our class, too, was finally represented by the red and white lettermen jackets. Our class was definitely achieving. We achieved also a higher place in the float and spirit award competition. Our float, a replica of two dice bearing the title For us, a win's no gamble received a second place. We received a third in spirit. Our float was constructed at the home of fellowclassmate Karin Roser. Our sophomore year showed improvement. Our junior year was perhaps the most productive of all our years here. It was then that we reached our heights in athletic and academic achievement. Members of our class received honors and awards both locally and nationally. Here at Wirt, too, we received more recognition for our efforts. Our junior float, a train engine with the slogan Choo-Choo em up, received first place in the float competition. It was the best. The float constructing was held at the home of fellowclassmate Karen Spurlock. Our class had definitely made an impression at Wirt. Our senior year can best be described as a combination of every year we have spent at Wirt. The beginning of the year especially showed our optimistic feelings about graduation. We wore graduation caps and gowns to school. The senior float, constructed at Karen Spurlock's home and which received a second place, was a giant football topped with a graduation cap and tassle; our theme was We'll go out winning. We received first place in the class for the coveted spirit award. In the senior year we continuously showed the sophistication and finess that we had acquired mostly in our junior year. The steadfastness and determination of our sophomore and freshman years also played an important role in our behavior. Though a definitely mature and refined class, we were not beyond the temptations of doing what one may consider freshman-like pranks. Ours was the only class to kidnap the bust of William A. Wirt, located in the school's main library. This incident, over-all in our senior year, best exemplifies the basic humanity that lay beneath our gilded sophistication. On June 7, 1978 our class was graduated from Wirt High School. Overall, our stay at Wirt has meant far more than competing for float and spirit awards, it has meant more than competiting to see what class had more spirit and what class was best. Our stay here, rather, has been a valuable learning experience. We have become responsible, well educated young adults. We are prepared now to face the world, no longer as a class, but as individual decisive persons, all because of the immeasurable learning we have received at Wirt. We must say goodbye now to old classes, textbooks and very good friends, but we are ready now to achieve even more in life. We are ready. —Carlton Long 74 PRECIOUS YESTERDAY In childhood A golden sun rose In our lives, Radiant streams of gold Soared wonderously overhead. And as children Everything was far away, and serene. Pale blue skies swayed softly As we walked to school, carefree; life then was just existence. Time went by. The sun still rose. And the pale skies still swayed drowsily. Childhood questions were answered—and gone. Identity came in a changing world. Elementary was gone. Life's powerful hands gripped us harder And we saw that living v as no longer simple, n longer ABC. Existence did not soothe us, was not enough. And today the sun still rises. The powerful beams still soar overhead. In the calmness of yesterday. But, that was then. Today we are alive, knowing the song of existence. Today, today we face the sunrise wanting tomorrow desperately but safely storing the simple, golden sunrise of a precious yesterday. —Carlton Long nderclassmenunderclassmenunderclassmenunderclas The office of the superintendent was held by Gordon McAndrew. Wirt's administration was led by our principal, Richard Barack. Assisting him were Richard Oppman and Oran McCune, with Paul Freeland serving as dean. Gloria Griffin and Don Rogers served as deans in Mr. Barack's absence. Last year, our staff and faculty pictures were not returned by the printer, and with only a few of the staff showing up for Picture Day, the. faculty page is much smaller than usual. X Susan Farkas Pam Burrell This year, girl's and boy's state was held at ISU in Terre Haute. The delegates to boy's state were David Tropp and Danny Friel and to girl's state, Susan Farkas and Pam Burrell. This was a great chance for these students to learn about and participate in state and local government. All participants at both boy's and girl's state were expected to run for an office, and the students from Wirt ran for offices and won. David Tropp held the position of county councilman, and delegate to the state convention. Danny Friel was elected precinct committeeman. As a committeeman Danny was also delegate to the state convention. He had David were among those electing the candidates who would run for their party as state officials in the state election. These were very respected positions. Ironically, Susan and Pam were elected to the very same offices but in different political parties. They first were elected precinct committeemen and later elected state senators. This was a position of high honor, and as senators they even passed and defeated bills. Congratulations for a job well done. GIRL'S AND BOY'S STATE 127 David Tropp Danny Friel STUDENT GOVERNMENT This year's Student Council officers were: President-Stephen Currie (middle). And thats the way we were. The Sandscript Staff is hopeful that the contents of the preceding pages will provide each and everyone with pleasant and cherished memories of the 1978-79 school year. We sincerely hope that the Senior Class in particular will accept these photo memories as a tender farewell to this happy days at Wirt. The staff has devoted long hours and much effort to achieve these objectives. I'd like to express my thanks on behalf of myself and the staff to Mr. Meneakis, who gave us the encouragement and guidance to make this yearbook possible, and to the many of those who so generously contributed their time and talents. We do feel, however, that Tracy Brough is deserving of a special thanks for her outstanding Chicago photo on the inside cover; also, to Mr. Hayes for helping us make the candy sale a success. Most of all, to the staff who deserves all the credit for their patience, cooperation, and creativity. Good Luck to Lucy Cauchon who will be taking my place next year as Editor. I wish you success in whatever you endeavor. Good Luck to everyone. I hope you enjoy this book. What though the radiance which was once so bright Be now for ever taken from my sight Though nothing can bring back the hour Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower We will grieve not rather find Strength in what remains behind.''
