OLD Because Miller was the first community in Gary, it contains many historic buildings. Landmarks such as the old Miller Town Hall, the Pavilion, Father Marquette and others provide a rich traditional background for our unique duneland neighborhood. They also serve as a strong base for new growth and change. Our school community has many traditions of its own. Teachers such as Mrs. Schulze, Mr. Simmons, and Mr. Schipper have contributed to their development. These traditions have become a part of the school-constant forces in our ever-changing world. , —■ IORS 15 EOPLEPEOPLEPEOPLEPEOPLEPEOPLEPEOPLEP PLEPEOPLEPEOPLEPEOPLEPEOPLEPEOPLEPE FRESHMEN PRESIDENT John Boyden VICE PRESIDENT Steve Dunn SECRETARY-TREASURER Sherlyn Hill Gina Bernardi Lynn Bielski Jackie Blakemore Beth Blaney Calvin Blanford Cheryl Bogue Jennifer Bonner Craig Bowling Charles Boyd Derex Boyd John Boyden Amanda Bradley Veronica Brannon Cedric Brown Chrystal Brown Debbie Bruno Michaline Bryniarski Ed Buckley Kim Abner Paul Aguilar Lorrie Alexander Patsy Allen Dorothy Anthony Bessie Argeroudis Joe Azad Gary Bailey Margie Ball Jeff Bardsley Rebecca Barnett Mark Barreiro Kent Bartel Dale Barwig Jim Bedwell Julie Bennett Debbie Burch Sheila Burke Dennis Burns Lamar Burr Kendra Burroughs Arcella Butts Alicia Carnahan Donald Carr Darnell Carroll Calvin Chaney Carole Charleston Carmen Cintron mmm Bonita Clinton Peggy Coldiron Jerry Crenshaw Paula Croy Michelle Crudup Tim Cunningham Alan Currie James Czarnecki David Daniels Lee Darkis Dan Davis Keith Davis Randy Dawkins Bridget Dickson Merritt Dilts Jeff Disser Cindy Dolasky Kathleen Dolasky Maye Donald Sherry Drinkard Steve Dunn Susie Easter Theresa Elliott Davis Estill Geoff Eustice Felicia Farras Felicia Fernandez Nancy Fernandez Karen Fodor Brad Fraser Julie Friel Glenn Gagliardi Robin Gallion Danny Georgopoulos Laura Gilles Carl Gilyard Barb Goings Mike Gonzalez Trinidad Gonzalez Karen Goode JoAnne Grabarek Todd Graves Kathy Gray John Green Robert Griffith Steve Gualandi 19 FRESHMEN David Hunter Bruce Isley Renaldo Jackson Veronica Jackson Alicia Jimenez Nick Jimenez Adrienne Johnson Cecilia Johnson Charles Johnson Tim Johnson Carlye Jones Paul Jones Craig Karagory Tim Jones Vernetta Jones Tom Kerr Shelly Keysor Robin Kirk Ron Gulleage Sarah Gullette Jeff Hale Gail Hall William Hardin James Harris Joseph Harris Michael Harris Sandy Hazelton Cecilia Helton Lee Henderson Michael Hennage Cary Hill Sherlyn Hill Kathy Hobbs Lionel Holman Sean Knightly Kim Kollasch Greg Kraus Larry Lambert Bill Larsen John Lazzaroni Carol Ledbetter Joanne Ledbetter Harold Lentner Carleton Lewis Karla Lewis Tonya Lewis 20 Victor Lucio Mary Lyman Mike Mackel Marti Madison Jackie Malaine Isabel Maldonaldo Sherri Mantz David Mario Mindy Mathias Harry Maxwell Kim Mayes Letroy Mays Stephanie McElroy Jackie McFerson Sylvia Mclntee Elsa McKamey Brian McMullen Mike McNally CUSS OF '81 IN MEMORY OF REGINA DUKES BORN: 1-9-62 DIED: 12-15-77 Carmen Melendez Andrea Melton Paul Metzger Emile Miller Jacquese Mitchell Ardetta Moody Bill Moore Darrell Moore Lori Moore Mike Morrison Tammy Mortozis Linda Mula Lisa Myers Reggie Nelson Greg Nichols Syrentha Nichols David Ochoa Tom Olesh Liz Parker Laura Parks Michael Parks Sam Patterson Jurhonda Patton Cathy Pavicich Marvin Pearson Joey Peete Danetta Perry Robin Petersen 21 Nancy Petro Don Pettit Doris Pettit Marvin Phillips Mary Ann Pickford Patty Plascencia Loretta Ralph Charles Ramos Chris Reising Jaoquin Reyes Donna Rice Sam Riverra Ron Rizzo Curt Roark Tim Robards Todd Robbins Tami Robinson Bryan Rodda Phillip Rogers Shelly Rogers Meg Roman Edwin Ross Mike Rouse Earl Sain Bob Samocki Jeff Sandoval John Santana Mike Scherer Charlotte Sebulsky John Serrano Tracy Sharp Alan Shiras Marvelous Short Patricia Sims Regina Skinner Sue Slamkowski Earl Smith Jeff Smith Rhonda Smith Yolanda Smith Mary Beth Sosa Jackie Spencer Jim Spencer Lisa Staack Lisa Staack David Stalry 22 Chris Stowers Sheryll Sturgell Tabb Mathis Jerry Tachik Crystal Taliefero Barb Tallant Mark Taylor Maruice Taylor Robert Taylor Tanya Taylor Ricky Tellez Troy Thompson Gabriel Tinoco Michelle Tipton Clifford Trethewey Carmen Tovar Phil Unruh Penny Valentine CLASS OF '81 Laura Dickens Pam Duncan Alan Jenkins Maria Lucio Mike Peters Richard Yontz Angela Young John Young Margarita Yzaguirre Retakes arrived too late to alphabetize. Everything was so competitive and we wanted to strive in school. All the newness put us in awe but we were awake enough to win 2nd place for float. Third place for spirit was great for freshmen. We began to form a group in 9th grade, instead of a bunch of kids who happened to graduate the same year. Parties, cars, and '78 seemed far off but if we only knew how fast it would go by. Football games and new clubs kept us busy. Formal dances were exciting but scary. 10th A few people began driving and working which made us seem like adults already. We felt that we had grown more that summer than ever before. No longer those freshmen ' we began to be humans; with feelings yet. Some of our guys even got letter jackets. Homecoming came and went with a little less excitement than the year before. Another 3rd place spirit award made us more determined for next year. This was an in-between year for us; not too young but not old enough either. 11th This years homecoming was a great success. Never before had our class been so together on decorating halls, float and just plain having spirit. It was a shock to us that we only won 2nd place for spirit. Our poor Panther fell apart on our float. We were finally upperclassmen with OUR guys names being called for VARSITY football. We put King and Queen together with a flourish and it was wonderful. 12th So finally Senior year is almost over. The four years have sped by so fast. A first in spirit made it all worthwhile. We had the first outdoor pep session, which was great too. So as we make job and college decisions we enter a new world, just as we entered a new world 4 years ago. High school gave us the strength to say Here we are world, get ready. It will be hard to think of a life without Wirt, but oh, so easy to relive those wonderful memories of the best and most important years of our lives. Thank you, Wirt, for raising us into adults. We'll miss you. The team was just preliminary to see how it would work. Coach Toma plans to have this year's team organized in conference play. The Girls Track Team really improved this year. They had a lot more girls that went out and also they had gained helpful experience from the year before. In the meets, they only defeated Emerson, but a look at the scores shows that they will soon be defeating many teams. Last year's sectional qualifiers were, in the 440 yd. Relay; Tony Carter, Lela Gates, Sandra Jenkins, and Sharon Wiggins, Long Jump; Angela Mathias, Softball Throw and Shot Put; Jackie Kurley. Jackie went on to Regionals in the Shot Put and placed 6th. This was her 2nd year at regionals. Next year, we hope to see many new faces and are hoping for a winning track team. 76 m 'MtogSSA «TT:.V. i|p§ ■ :?iA: -y ;• K iNa0$ • ' .•.?.v. vr', v. •. • • £2 - - ' ■ ;- - .A W -UT -• .; j.-v « $ '■ «• - JW'! • • •• '% . jS j - -V-jy- --y -v ; 555si j«C« ” v' ' • 78 Team. Although this year's volleyball team had no seniors, they put forth the effort needed to make it a challenging season. The team got off to a slow start, but excelled during the second half of the season. Next year, we wish the returning team the best of luck. For the Conference Championship the team played Lew Wallace. Despite the fact that Wirt gave them a tough match, they lost when time ran out. During Sectionals, especially with the help of Jackie Kurley and Marci Iatarola, the team advanced to the semi-finals. Congratulations to the whole team. Although the Cross Country Team didn't have a winning season, they did have some remarkable individual achievements. Sophomore, Pat Luckett did very well with two 1st places, two 2nds, three 3rds, and one 4th, and placing 5th in the Northwest Conference Championships. Freshman, John Boyden, had one 3rd place, one 4th, two 5th, and one 6th. Senior, James Blakemore, had one 3rd place and placed 17th in the Northwest Conference Championships. 94 PICTURED LEFT TO RIGHT: Coach Martinson, Jim Blakemore, Richard Fuller, Steve Currie, Pat Luckett, and Paul Metzger. CROSS COUNTRY This year the tennis team had an excellent season. Their record was 13 and 2. It was the 2nd consecutive year that they have won the city meet. They also won the sectionals for the first time in ten years. Exceptional individuals must include Sal Lopez the 1st singles, Ervin Pulliam 2nd singles, and Michael Comer 3rd singles. Homecoming will be a night remembered forever. 97 o Od LU CQ LU I— CL LU CO O O o LU Senior Attendant Lisa Anthonisen Escorted by Jim Pickford This year's Homecoming Queen and her court are: Queen Dawn Bradley, escorted by Craig Kirksey. The Pep Club did very little due to lack of support of the majority of the Wirt students. There were a few faithful followers, however. The purpose of the Pep Club is to promote spirit and give support to our teams, but this year it seems that the main reason for joining the club is because its membership is mandatory for trying out for cheerleading. Since Title IX has come into effect, stating that there can not be discrimination between boys and girls, the sponsors of cheerleading allowed anyone to try out even if they were not in Pep Club. They were forced to do this because they were told that it was not specifically stated in the beginning of the year that boys were allowed to join. From then on people have assumed that to try out, you did not have to be in Pep Club and therefore our membership has declined drastically. The support given by the students as shown in their participation with the Pep Club and especially with the cheerleaders is lacking; and I sincerely hope that something can be done to get this lack of spirit up to par. This year Wirt's Swim Team made an excellent showing. They were victorious in all their conference meets except against West Side, and they are expected to take second in city. The team is coached by Alice Pickford and Bo Wozniak, and this year's cocaptains were Angela Mathias and Jeff Smith. There were many outstanding individual contributions to the team. Jim Pickford accumulated the most points and swam times that will probably enable him to go down state. Freshmen, Bruce Isley, Mary Ann Pickford, Mike Hennage, and Mike Scheerer did very well. Mike Comer and Jeff Smith helped the team. The diving team was fairly successful, despite the fact, they had no diving coach. Good Luck next year! We hope everyone enjoyed the music presented by Just For You . We thank the sponsors, Mr. Bassett, Mr. and Mrs. Hayes, Mr. and Mrs. Marsden, Mr. and Mrs. Meneakis, and Mr. and Mrs. Troxel. There were a little more than 100 couples attending this year. We thank everyone for their support. 124 The blizzard of 1978 occurred exactly eleven years to the day after the blizzard of 1967: January 26th, to be exact. Although the snow was not as deep, and the traffic was not tied up as badly; never-the-less we lost three days of school to the snow. Coupled with the snow and cold was the longest coal miner's strike in history. Some school systems went to a four day week, while others had extended vacations. Many users of electricity had to curtail the use of outdoor lighting and factories went to a four day week. A Wirt school bus was involved in an accident with another bus and some students were hospitalized for short periods. All in all, only the Ski Club enjoyed the surplus of the white stuff. The rest of us, like Scrooge, cried, Bah, Humbug . 128 THE GREAT BLIZZARD OF 1978 129 General Weyand, Deputy Commander of Recruiting at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, visited Wirt's R.O.T.C. EDDIE ZAPATA 139 THE 1977 SENIOR PROM On Friday May 13, 1977, the Senior class of 1977 presented their Senior Prom; We May Never Pass This Way Again . Although the occasion fell on the dreaded thirteenth, it was a success. For the first half of the evening the Bill Galik Combo played a few waltzs, polkas, and tangos. When everyone returned at 12:00 they were welcomed by the popular sounds of Stonewood Fox. 142 U3 A lot goes into the making of a yearbook, that is not seen in the completed book. The majority of the student body is usually satisfied with the effort that the Annual Staff and Mr. Nick put into the book, while on the other hand, there are always some who have only complaints and criticisms. For these select few this is what I have to say: The 1978 Sandscript is the best book that could have possibly been created with the money and materials that we had available to work with. I know that my staff and I are perfectly satisfied with this production. I have to give a great deal of the credit due to my staff, for without their patience, imagination, and creativity the layouts for each and every page would not have been done as well as they are. The student body owes their appreciation for this year's book to the staff's devotion. I would also like to thank Indiana School Pictures for messing us up again this year, almost causing us to miss two deadlines. I hope they get on the ball next year so they won't mess things up for Mary. This year's fantastic cover is the work of Josh Dreyfus. This is the first year ever at Wirt that there has been a color picture for the cover. Thanks again Josh. Jeremy Stern, Peter Gonzalez, and Josh are the photographers who are responsible for the pictures throughout the book. My main inspiration this year has been Mr. Nick Meneakis. The same has been true this year, as well as every year, without Mr. Nick this book would not be a reality. He was always there when we needed him. Even though he wasn't there for a time, he was there in spirit and we love him. George, (note: not Mr. Kingsley!) was also a big help, especially when we had questions about extra things that we wanted to include in the book but couldn't afford. Most of all I would like to wish next year's staff—Sandscript '79, the best of luck, especially Mary Dault who will succeed me as editor. I hope your staff works as well for you as my staff did for me. All I can say is good luck, as it was a pleasure working with all of you. I hope everyone likes this book as well as I do.
