In addition to strengthening the bond between parent and teacher, the Parent Teacher Association backed various activities to raise funds in support of school affairs. Whether athletic event, pep rally, or social function, Mr. Chance and Mr. Grigsby were always on hand. By their faithful attendance, both our principal and assistant principal, displayed their desire for improved communication between student and executive. As all organized institutions, a school system must have a legislative department. The School Board served this need well with Dr. Lee R. Gilbert, Superintendent of schools as its director. Such factors enabled the Gary Schools to top previous records for superiority of learning in our city. Superintendent, Dr. Lee R. Gilbert Gary Board of School Trustees Standing: Mr. Donald Belec, Secretary; Mr. Leroy Mitchell, Treasurer. Keeping our school clean and in smooth working order, were our hard working custodians. When the long awaited lunch hour arrived, hungry Troopers rushed for the cafeteria where our fine cafeteria staff prepared and served each day’s menu. Carrying out their everyday duties, Wirt’s conscientious secretaries and guidance counselors, were ready to help each student. Mrs. Lindstrom and Mrs. Dwyer, our cashiers, are also a vital part of our cafeteria staff. Students benefit from personal instruction in individual development reading classes. Mrs. Janet Parfenoff Mrs. Gloria Hjerpe Mrs. Isabella Shirk, IDR Instructor 26 Personality and Character Besides competing with their new environment, the seventh and eighth graders of Willie Wirt have started probing into the new and unfamiliar forms of English literature. They were orientated with Steinbeck’s short stories along with poetry by several famous American poets. All through the year-they were kept on their toes with spelling tests, bringing their continually growing vocabularies to new heights. During the past school year, the speech and drama classes, under the duel supervision of Mrs. Margaret Labb Jones and Mrs. Phyllis Court, have gone deep into the fundamentals of diction, audience contact, and overcoming nervousness while speaking publicly. Their aim has been to develop a well rounded personality in each of their students and to arouse a further interest in the study of speech and dramatics. Practicing newly learned poise and confidence, speech student, Sue Anderson, delivers a well received address. Mrs. Margaret Labb Jones Mrs. Phyllis Court The annual Christmas production is rehearsed to perfection by the combined Drama classes. 27 Mr. William Morris Mr. Steven Bazin Members of a senior English class ask, Was Lady Macbeth really that bad?’’ Mr. Paul Elliot Mrs. Sharon Robbins Miss Marilyn Lerch Miss Mary Goluch Mr. David Kazen Teachers Expound 28 Depth In Literary Development Having returned from Harvard where he was studying on a John Hay Fellowship, Mr. William Morris reattained the chairmanship of the English department at Wirt. Under his direction, the English teachers worked toward another rewarding year. In the senior classes, the emphasis was on classic plays such as Macbeth and advanced composition work. Once more, the juniors' teachers helped to make a term paper a reality. Under the direction of well-prepared instructors the sophomores found the topics of Silas Marner and Julius Caesar had rounded off the better part of their first year. Guiding the freshmen along through their first year, teachers imposed the importance of analyzing a novel in their keen exploration of Great Expectations. The Troopers had no trouble in finding bits of information in our spacious, modern library. Mrs. Mary Oppman, assisted by Mr. Richard Scheub, kept it stocked with all available, up to date literary materials. Aiding in our eagerness to learn was a very efficient audio-visual department, headed by Mr. Scheub. It provided a variety of film strips, tapes, and movies for both teachers and students. Mrs. Mary Oppman With o pencil, a card, and a smile, student librarians effi ciently distribute library materials. Mr. Richard Scheub 29 Wirt Linguistics Expand Mrs. Elsie Wendt Miss Florence Portillo Mrs. Maria Valdes Mr. Joseph Fryar Mrs. Linda Waechter Listening to a recording of her own voice, Barbara Nicksic furthers her fluency in Spanish. First year German scholars. Bill Hess and Clarence Dean, seem to be getting more out of the language than fellow classmates. 30 to Include German Classes An examination in French grammar is food for thought for second year students. Miss Irene Krivaila Mr. Theo Theis History and geography complete the course in first year German. Every year our language department expands, becoming more efficient, and this year the tradition was finely upheld. Added to our standard curriculum of French, Spanish, and Latin were new classes in German. Composing the ranks of the new students were fourth and fifth year French and Spanish students, who found themselves struggling to learn a new accent, while German also became the adopted language for many students who tackled a foreign tongue for the first time. Not only has the language curriculum expanded, but also the number of teachers and foreign language students. Our modern and efficient language facilities were well used, aiding the teacher in presenting his material and the students in grasping the intricacies of a language foreign to his own native tongue. By the end of the year, a friendly greeting in foreign jargon of any type was not only frequent, but perhaps as common as the typical English Hi. Spanish III students listen as one fellow Spaniard presents a dialogue. 31 Modern Math ‘Sets Mr. George Dunleavy Mr. Monte Foster Miss Nancy Bollinger Mr. Nick Meneakis Attempting to understand the world of math, students attend to geometric laws. Mrs. Theresa Hannon Mrs. Roberta Nelson Junior high school mathematicians concentrate on the explanation of a difficult point. 32 New Methods For Math Teachers Algebra students illustrate that math is learned through problem solving and practice. Freshman moth students strive to start their high school careers on the right foot. Mr. Edward Senf Mrs. Jan Uecker Keeping up with today's world and the need for advanced training in and knowledge of changing mathematics, our outstanding math department, headed by Mr. George Dunleavy, offered their students the new basics of modern math. Along with the standards of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and analytical geometry, modern math was added. Young mathematicians found themselves faced with more demanding challenges and broader opportunity than had any preceding Wirt students. The advancement involved far more than just the high school students. Seventh and eighth graders started receiving the modern training right from the beginning, enabling their background in the new mathematics to fully develop. For all students it was rough going, but well worth the struggle when compared to the working knowledge gained. Mr. Leonard Gorsegner Mr. Gregory Molinaro Freshman math students strive to absorb the complex why's and how's of intricate algebra problems. 33 Mr. Xavier Carrico Mr. James Ertel Mr. David Lukosik Science Staff Nurtures Mr. Robert Holt Mr. Marvin Syren Utilizing a vast store of equipment, biologists prepare and experiment. 34 Theories are confirmed by a check with litmus paper. Miss Kristin Heilman Mr. Douglas Tweeten New Understanding of Life With every year, new classes of eager students embark on the mysteries of science. This past year was no exception. Exploring the wonders of morphology and physiology, the rapidly developing student biologists learned of the complexities of living things. Under the leadership of Mr. Ertel, science chairman, students worked diligently in Wirt's excellent laboratories, making observations and gaining precision experience. Young chemists learned of nature's elements and their many reactions in varied combinations. Physics students studied the whys behind the phenomena of light, motion, and space relation. Complicated normality and molarity problems were solved by advanced scientists who had benefitted from the fine science courses offered at Wirt. Eighth grade scientists develop experimental techniques which will aid them in future study. 35 Social Mr. Lewis Simmons Science Alerts Students As the world’s people grew closer together and their problems became more complex, social science teachers were challenged with the need of covering a vast range of new and far-reaching material. Seniors studied the complexities of our own government, discovering the real meaning of good citizenship, and tackled the intricate workings of economics. Juniors began soaking up the facts of the United States history, sorting out the tangled mass of vaguely familiar historic happenings, and assembling them into a meaningful pattern. Other than the required courses, students studied geography and history on a world-wide scope. Field trips and speeches, completing the agenda, rounded out the year with the offer of knowledge from those of personal experience and governmental background. U.S. history students turn their attention to a display on the side board. Attentive students listen to a discussion on the ancient customs of the world. Miss Sandra Tallos Mrs. Florence Schulze Miss Karen Compton Mrs. Frances Ceaser 36 To World-wide Problems Mr. John Ban Captivated by one of Mr. Onda's stirring lectures are students of world history. Miss Barbara Mucci The problems of the economy monopolize the attention of economics students during a test. Mr. Robert Duffy 37 r Mr. Walter Nabhan Players ready themselves for the jump ball as Skip Coley prepares for the toss. Mr. Jack Owen Mr. John Stefanelli Safety Training Physical education stresses development of ability plus mental alertness. Coach Nabhan's competent staff of instructors stresses the importance of physical fitness on all of their students. Football, handball, and gymnastics headed the well planned agenda. Under well experienced direction, the girls physical fitness program materialized. Acrobatics, wallball, basketball, volleyball, and folk dancing kept them physically in shape all year. Driving is a skill acquired by time and is not learned over night. Coach Owen, along with Coach Bracich and Coach Newton, impressed this point on all students within the first few days of each class. Along with learning the skills of driving, helpful mechanical techniques were lightly but importantly stressed. Burpies provide welcomed exercise for feminine figures. The action is fast’n furious in a girls basketball contest. 38 Safeguards Physical Activity Miss Eleanor Brace Miss Arlene Olson Girls wait eagerly “on the bench in a heated basketball game. -A Mr. John Newton Mr. Walter Brachich Alert spotters keep watch while Doug Fairley performs other difficult feat on the parallel bars. 39 Cultural Mrs. Dorothy Ives Engrossed in on arts and crofts project. Sue Garcia explores the ancient process of weaving. As the fine arts played an ever-increasing role in the culture of our society, Wirt's art and music teachers worked to broaden and enrich the scope of their materials. Keeping pace with the educational needs of our time, Mrs. Ives, as senior art advisor worked with her students and fellow teachers to provide the school with any needed artistic projects, enhancing our building and all school productions. The music department coordinated not only our own concerts, but also participated in the Spring Music Festival and NISBOVA, each year graduating a larger number of skilled musicians and trained vocalists. This was the reward of dedication and six years of intense work. Mr. Eric Matysiak 40 Talent reigns supreme in the commercial art class. Studies Elevate Curriculum Mr. Joseph Baranko Mr. Thomas Dobay JA Mr. Mitch Bender Mr. Robert Beckman Junior high band students practice in the spirit of true musicians. Theory and harmony students listen as their instructor theorizes and harmonizes. Beginning orchestra students follow the baton of their director. 41 Students Prepare With the development of business and the increasing demand on Americans to be able to figure budgets, tax forms, and to cope with the complicated ways of our economic society, the business department has also expanded, enabling it to prepare Wirt's students for their future roles as useful members of the American public. With Mr. Robert Weddell's experience and skill providing guidance, the business education faculty stressed the need for proficiency in typing for college-bound students as well as those training for secretarial positions, while offering invaluable guidance to those with interest in the growing opportunities available in the business world. Closely related to business education, training in the industrial arts not only acted as a foundation for future learning, but also afforded the opportunity for Wirt students to sample possible vocational interests and to test their natural ability and adeptness in the industrial skills. Opportunities Open To Gifted Students Students showing outstanding academic aptitude and above average achievement in their first two years of high school were able to broaden and supplement their regular curriculum by participating in the Gary Advanced Study Program. Operating on tri-mesters for the first time this year the program offered more opportunity for continued study in various seminars and a more diversified range of discussion groups. Toward the end of the year, Seniors received their first teaching experience, substituting in some classes for our regular faculty on the Annual Senior Teachers' Day. Here, those who had tentative plans for teaching as a career made primary discoveries as to their ability and real vocational interest. Cheryl Eley Football-O-Romo Queen Joan Stump Attendant Football-O-Rama Opening the Gary schools football season with its traditional excitement, the 1965 Football-O-Rama surpassed all previous performances in color, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship. With eight teams and sixteen Queen candidates, competition was keenly felt, and the victors richly rewarded. The Trooper team displayed what hard training and the will to win does for a team that faces a seemingly over-powering foe. Though we didnt win, we witnessed no raids' by the Tolleston team who left the game at the 0-0 mark. 48 Spirit Soars to Greet Homecoming Enthusiasm mounted the week before Homecoming as students actively participated in dressing-up Miller and prepar- ing for the school-wide, out-door pep rally. 49 A Victorious Homecoming: Spirit . Queen candidates, painted windows, bright banners, red and white halls, and a hard-working football team were the first signs of the 1965 Homecoming. In a whirlwind of scurrying work and activity, the entire student body and surrounding community were caught-up in the excitement of a parade, a queen, and that all-important game. The Homecoming parade was blessed with bubbling enthusiasm and beautiful weather. As the many colorful units converged on the Wirt football field, spirit surged and climaxed at the outdoor pep session with the announcement of the grand prize . .runs on! senior flag and the first prize junior flag. As the field lights dimmed, Troopers headed home, overflowing with expectation of the coming game. Lowell offered little resistance to our boys who thundered to a 34-0 victory, sending ecstatic Troopers into frenzied fits of joy. At the height of this perfection came the announcement of Cheryl Eley as our 1965 Homecoming Queen. As it all came to an end, seniors felt the first nostalgic pangs of realization that it was their last, and underclassmen found themselves looking forward to another perfect Homecoming. Much of the credit for a delightful evening was due to Judy Nash and her efforts as chairman of the affair. As we decorated that afternoon, we saw the Pavilion transformed, as if by magic, into a winter wonderland of fantasy. On Monday, December 20, 1965, the scene was set for the year's first major social event and a wonderful beginning for the holiday season. From eight o'clock to eleven, couples munched holiday cookies and danced to the beat of the Mystics. As the girls and their dates departed for their favorite dinner spots, they looked forward to February in anticipation of the King and Queen dance, Fame and Fortune. 54 Regal Fame And Fortune Queen Bonnie Spungen King Doug Fairley 55 Royal Senior Couples Epit For weeks in advance of the actual event, we waited and wondered who the senior royalty would be. As the day of the King and Queen dance approached, this was the thought prevalent in all senior minds. On the eighteenth day of February, nineteen hundred and sixty-six, the mystery was to be solved. At the Marquette Park Pavilion, seniors were honored by the junior class with its presentation of Fame and Fortune. The efforts of committees and committee chairmen, Cindy Ross, Entertainment; Jan Richardson, Publicity; Marcy Rubinstein, Programs and Tickets; Gordana Jocic, Decorations; Bonny Janes, Sponsors and Gifts; Kay Cope, Refreshments; Steve Weiss, Elections; and Tom Gourley, General Chairman, were rewarded with the coming of eight o'clock and the smiles of approval from the arriving guests. The suspense of the evening mounted as couples danced to the music of the Mystics or snacked on cookies and punch amid a decor of huge coins and 56 omize Outstanding Qualities money trees. The atmosphere conveyed the junior opinion that the future outlook was bright for the seniors of 66. At last the long-awaited hour arrived and the music ceased. All eyes turned toward the regal throne for the announcements of those to be honored. Then came the voice of master of ceremonies, Ken Brown: Neatness in Dress, Nancy Miller and Jack Burger; Smile, Roxanne Hunt and Harry Shelgren; Hair, Mary Ann Dusich and Larry Skingley; Eyes, Paula Brogno and Joe Paquin; Wit, Sue Anderson and Zack Cornea; Most Likely to Succeed, Pam McNichols and Bruce Fine; Dance, Dave Feigenbaum and Chris Wysong; Personality, Cheryl Eley and Art Berke; Femininity and Masculinity, Linda Robinette and Skip Coley. And finally the golden moment arrived when their royal majesties. Tom and Chris blast into orbit around the ceaseless beat of the band. Pam and Diane find themselves captured by the charms of their partners. Reflections of Jerkin Joan and bouncin’ Bob entice their partners to keep on dancing. 62 the Past, Anticipation of the Future Our ceremonious evening of pomp and circumstance was preceded by a gala night which drifted into morning in a moment. The Prom was an event to be remembered. After weeks of preparation and shopping for just the right gown or dinner jacket, the magical hour of eight o’clock arrived on May 20. Shining cars pulled up in front of the pavilion and from them emerged couples ready for a few hours of romantic elegance. With the end of the Grand March came a change in mood as the scene changed to Jackson's and the riotous Dawn Hop. June 6, 1966, Memorial Auditorium—Graduation and the realization of a goal. With caps and gowns in order, we meditated upon the four years of successes and failures that had comprised a class. Though the commencement exercises terminated our high school years, we will ever remain the class of 66. CLUBS Scoring a Victory as 66 They “Touch and Go” To the 1966 SANDSCRIPT Staff TOUCH and GO' was not only the theme for the yearbook but also the way of life on annual staff. Unprinted pictures, lost contact sheets, unfinished copy, and missed deadlines contributed to our exasperation but never to our defeat. Each staff member did his best and gave a part of himself to the annual. To the rest of the students at Wirt the 1966 SANDSCRIPT will be a record of the past school year, but to. . . Kathy, who never quite succeeded in getting room 221 quiet sixth hour. . . Joe, who should have gotten an A in bookkeeping as he kept track of all our funds. . . Stacey, whose artistic ability and knowledge gave the book the added touches it needed. . . Pat, whose problem was to get the photographers and the staff members together at the same time. . . Lynn, who knows whose pictures are on every page of the annual. . . Cheryl and Ann, who almost had to spend the night of the eighteenth in room 221. . . Mary Lou and Marc, who were the first to leave but always came back. . . Barbara and Sue, who always met the new teachers after their pages had been sent in. . . Jeff and Zach, who solved the question of the year, how to take golf shots in a foot of snow. . . Joan, Sherry, and Clarence, who wrote and rewrote in an attempt to come up with fresh ideas. . . Cheryl, Judy, Peggy, Roz, Steve, Pat, and Sue, who now know the faces of every student in school. . . Norman, Jim, Tom, Cindy, Shirley, and Cheryl, who produced many more pictures than we ever used . . .Chris, our most valuable member. . . and Mr. Meneakis, whose guidance as a sponsor and whose help as a photographer added more to our yearbook than any other single person. . . the 1966 SANDSCRIPT will always be a victory hard fought for and well deserved. 67 Phyllis Meyerson, Editor Cynthia Tsoutsouris, Tim Carlton, and Marilyn Berke study the rules for this year s literary competition. Sandy Heminger, Kathy Burns, and Susan Smolinske discuss the merits of the style used in one student s theme. Literary buffs Bob Thompson, Barb Nicksic, Leslie Neil, and Maureen Andreakis examine prospective material for this year's issue. Snaps and 68 Editor Adeane Alpert and her Associate Editor, Art Berke discuss an article in a previous issue of SOUNDTRACK. Communication has always been one of the most vital facets of high school life. Providing students with all current news items, as well as stimulating editorials, was the goal of SOUNDTRACK, and concurring with this aim, it was the duty of the SINGING SANDS staff to compile an anthology of student literary achievements. Each afternoon during sixth hour, room 123 hummed with the industrious activities of the SOUNDTRACK staff as they raced to meet monthly deadlines. With the capable guidance of editor Adeane Alpert and sponsor Mr. Bazin, our newspaper presented accurate accounts of all school events. Sunday afternoon SINGING SANDS meetings were conducted by editor Cynthia Tsoutsouris and sponsor Miss Goluch. Dedicated members willingly sacrificed their leisure time to turn out a publication representative of both the creative talents of Wirt students and the tireless efforts of a team. Blythe Baker, Barb Lavedas, Buck Rogers, Tom Gourley, Bill Hubbard, and Marcy Rubinstein take a minute to smile for the camera. Staff members Barb Murway, Janice Kirby, Sara Penny, Bill Cavalier, Penny King, and Margaret Parker are now seen on the other side of the camera. Prose Capture Wirt Moods 69 Senators Committee Chairmen: Jim Wolf, Building and Grounds; Judy Nash, Social; Zach Cornea, Election. Fourth hour lunch period quickly developed into a fast-moving, touch-and-go series of discussions, debates, motions, and immeasurable effort put-forth and carried-on by the two branches of the Wirt Student Council. Whether staging a talent show or raising money to help send a deserving Wirt student to college, the Senate’s superior organization and know-how were unmistakably apparent. Assisted by the outstanding leadership of Council President Lynn Rogers and the invaluable guidance of sponsor, Mr. Bert Ross, the Senators waded through student and school problems, trying to achieve the Student Council's stated purpose of promoting the welfare of William A. Register Representatives, Club Presidents, and Publications Editors became irreplaceable parts in the Student Council machinery as the W.S.O. House of Representatives swung into full force as the major body of communication between students, faculty, and administration. The House became a place of frequent and powerful debate as well as the central location for airing varied student opinions. The Representatives duties were, however, not limited to just talking as illustrated by their efficient handling of the student store, W.S.O. lost and found, and the hall guard system. Working closely with the Student Council, the Student Guidance Committee, under the capable leadership of President Roz Pachter and Sponsor Mrs. Ovalene Aaron, formed another link in the program to prepare students for adult life and responsibility. Martha Thompson, Evan Ralston, and George Tachtiris, Student Guidance members, prepare for College Night. Head Hall Guards, Cheryl Echterling and Paul Johnson check the schedule for the coming week. Act Well Your Part, There 74 All Honor Lies Pope 75 Typifying the true characteristics of Honor Society are Marc Kaplan and Cynthia Tsoutsouris. Founded as a national organization for only those who meet high standards in areas of character, leadership, service, and scholarship, the Honor Society has become one of Wirt s most active clubs. Much more than just a select group of students, the Honor Society members, organized by president Pam McNichols and sponsor Mrs. Roberta Nelson, strove to be worthy of the honor and responsibility placed on them as exemplified in the induction ceremony's traditional words: To you we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high. Symbol of wisdom's search, where truth’s deep secrets lie. Lighting the learner's path, in darkest parts of earth. The sign of scholar's faith, in man's eternal worth. To learn, to serve, to lead, and thus at last to be Worthy to bear the torch of light, eternally. This is the goal we seek, this is our earnest cry, To you we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high! Here it is, says Cheryl Eley as she displays the list of initiates to Bruce Fine. Kathy Burns and Mary Lou Kelly pensively investigate the new math materials. French Club officers: Paula Thanos, Treasurer; Molly Smith, Vice-President; Jeanine Komorowski, President; Karen Weiss, Historian; Sandy Miller, Secretary. Latin Club members, Tom Robinson, Steve Ziomek, Sharon Ravn, and Sandy Heminger, investigate career opportunities for Latin majors. 76 Club Activities The linguists of Wirt School used their time and talents in producing a well-rounded year of club activities. The French Club carried on its theme in its traditional le Petit Moulin Rouge at the Me Voutthis year. The Latin Club's paramount activity hinged on its success in the city-wide Latin Conference. Its Bac-canalia and Saturnalia, portraits of ancient Roman holidays, highlighted the year. Members of the Spanish Club were swept into a circle of activities leading up to their annual Christmas Fiesta where songs and skits headed the entertainment list. Last but not least is the new member to the language clubs, the German Club. In its early stages it organized many club activities, taking part in parties and hay rides. The linguists from all clubs brought to an end a year of hard work and fun with the annual Language Clubs dance and picnic. Spanish Club members David Smith, Nancy Sheridan, Pat Ayers, and Rick Weiss pose in front of Mrs. Wendt's verb chart. German Club officers: Rita Solomon, Secretary-Treasurer; Carol Paul, Social Chairman; Stuart Steinhardt, President; Louis Lesser, Sergeant-at-arms. German Club members Jeff Lions, Mike Toth, Barb Hirsch, and Dave Rein are four of many interested in the Rhineland. Spanish Club officers: Leslie Neil, Historian; Kitty Dominick, Vice President; Sara Packer, President; Andrea Russell, Treasurer; Gricelda Perez, Secretary. 77 Students Combine People with special interests turned to clubs which offered many opportunities for further study and enjoyment in specific areas. Under the experienced direction of Mr. Kazen, the Debate Club's potential was fully developed as illustrated by their many fine finishes over other skilled high school teams. F.T.A., Future Teachers of America, attempted to orientate future instructors to the many teaching opportunities throughout the United States. Their year was highlighted by the Hobart F.T.A. Conference. The Chess Club, directed by Mr. Simmons, provided entertainment for those with patience and cunning. Competition was not restricted to Wirt, as several games were played in inter-city competition. Science Club activities ranged from field trips to honoring guest speakers. Weekly meetings were highlighted by talks presented by individual members. Engrossed by a weekly speaker are Science Club members F.T.A. members P. King, B. Fisch, F. Bizanes, R. Radosh, S. E. Library Assistants Laura Levy and Karen Duffy know the importance of familiarity with library materials. Nancy Fay and Myrta Torres keep track of visitors to the library. Jay Tavris, Alan Lindstrom, and Shirley Powell, Library Assistants, take charge of the duties of the desk. 80 Vocational Areas The students of Wirt had many educational opportunities beyond those of an academic nature. By assisting individual teachers and various departments in the school, we gained valuable experience and possible vocational training. Student assistants were a much needed addition to the library staff, taking care of checking books, records, and magazines, keeping shelves in order, and helping other students to find needed materials. Under the supervision of Mr. Meneakis, light sources, shading, speed, and background became important factors to amateur photographers. Taking all pictures for the SOUNDTRACK and SANDSCRIPT, these students also learned to process their own pictures. While photographers promoted printed communication, intercom operators reached the entire school furthering student participation and total school unity. Intercom operators, from left to right, Tim Carlton, Andy Jakob, Adelle Nichols, Evon Ralston, Paula Brogno, and Alan Lindstrom, pause to preview the morning news. Photography staff members, from left to right, Cindy Robinson, Tom Robbins, Cheryl Primack, Norman Nab-han, Shirley Talbert, James Onoda, and Chris Wysong, smile for the candid camera. 81 The band officers are Marc Kaplan, Merit Secretary; Randy Hostetler, Vice-President; Jill Hebib, President and Phil Swan, Secretary-Treasurer. Diligent Our concert and marching band once again proved that practice makes perfect. Wearing new uniforms for the first time, band members participated in various parades, contests, and concerts. Bandmaster Mr. Baranko and drum major Randy Hostetler guided members through the many hours of field exercise necessary to perform with precision timing. With the rhythm and poise of professionals, our majorettes kept time to the marching beat with complicated routines. The sale of magazines and performances of various seasonal concerts provided funds for additional uniforms. With the final note of Pomp and Circumstance,” instruments and uniforms were readied for another summer of travel and experience. Woodwind Section - Front Row. N. Searle, M. Gilroy, D. Larson, M. United through a common artisitic interest were two musical groups. The woodwinds, strings, and brass of the orchestra harmonized to provide the right atmosphere when their services were requested at various programs and convocations. At the signal of Mr. Baranko s baton, instrumentalists gave their rendition of classical arrangements. The chorus, under the directorship of Mr. Beckman, participated in musical programs for the student body, contributing diversions from the usual evening entertainment as they broke into song. Both of these groups offered concerts of modern and classical music, highlighting the season with the spring Instrumental Varieties. The N.I.S. With President Allison Thomas and sponsor Miss Pat Carlson introducing the new' Pep Club, old members found their club becoming revitalized with stricter rules, more activities, and superior organization; and new members realized the demands of such a working club, but also the pride of belonging. Aiding the Pep Club and cheerleaders in spirit boosting, the Pep Band, under the directorship of Mr. Joseph Baranko and Mr. Mitchell Bender, added zest and rhythm to the chants and cheers of Wirt fans. These select musicians contributed that extra something which made surging Wirt spirit swell with pride and vitality. Kit Bryan, Ken Ben Pierson. Wirt's cheerleaders started their season with vigorous summer practices, preparing them for their Football-O-Rama debut as well as their role on the regular football and basketball seasons. Throughout the year the girls were the leading force in building school spirit and backing for our teams. Whether leading cheers during a game, planning pep sessions, or making pompoms, both the varsity and reserve cheerleaders earned the students' and faculty's respect by their outstanding representation of Wirt School. Supporting the cheerleaders, the W-Club formed their own cheering block to work with the Pep Club at all home games. As Wirt's lettermen club, the high-ranking athletes provided numerous services to the school and community, especially promoting good sportsmanship and physical fitness. Leaders of the pack are left to right, Art Berke, Horry Shelgren, Jeff Sobal, Fred Fegley, Skip Coley, and Jim East-lund. 89 Win, Lose, or Planning an active year is the main job of officers: Karen Weiss, Marcy Rubinstein, Mary Lou Kelly, and Cindy Robinson. During the past twelve years, Miss Eleanor Brace has laid the foundation for Wirt's G.A.A.—a stable groundwork that will endure even though she was compelled to leave school this year. Overcoming this obstacle the G.A.A. officers, Mary Lou Kelly, president; Karen Weiss, vice-president; Marcy Rubinstein, secretary; and Cindy Robinson treasurer; carried on the usual organized sports as well as various other activities. Highlighting these were the November initiation of new members, the Spring Banquet, and the efficient handling of concessions at all home games. As always, the Girls' Athletic Association was an organization through which good sportsmanship and friendly competition were fostered. There's an old proverb which says all good things must come to an end. This is the feeling of the Wirt Football team towards their finest gridiron season since 1957. During the 65 football campaign, the Troopers combined an explosive offense and a tenancious defense to compile a sparkling 6-2 overall record. The games that will stick in the minds of the Trooper boosters, will be the Home-coming whitewash of Lowell, the Victory Bell conquest over Gary Edison, and the season finale for 11 seniors as the Millerites, one of the most respected teams in the Calumet Area, defeated Highland. It was a great year, and maybe this fine record and all-out hustle displayed by this year's squad will set a winning example for future grid squads. No one but the members of our '65- 66 swim team can realize the sacrifices and hardships we boys have endured to bring our school its finest swim team ever. With no pool at Wirt, we had to traverse the city each day to practice at Horace Mann, and all of us feel that it was Mr. Stefanelli, our new coach, who instilled us with the drive to excel. Coach Stefanelli s ability to build team spirit, and a desire to win in each of us, coupled with the natural talents of all our swimmers, brought us a 10-2 dual meet record, a second in the city, and a second in the Calumet Conference. During the 1965 baseball season, the Wirt Troopers came out of nowhere to become the Calumet Conference champions. Without an over-abundance of talent, the Trooper nine made themselves a classy unit, with that extra effort and putting out 150% all the time. The Troopers had their share of heroes also. To name a few, Danny Miller, Rich Dierolf, Jerry Perkins, Skip Coley, and Harry Shel-gren contributed a big part in the tremendous season. But to name one person or even five just couldn't be done. It was team effort that won t be equaled for a long time. The spirit and desire of this team should set a precedent for future Wirt baseball squads, as well as for the whole athletic program. Art Berke Wirt’s Jim Eastlund Takes Third In State The little publicized sport of cross country gained some attention this year as Jim Eastlund began with a first in the city and climbed to a third in the state. This is only Jim’s sophomore year, and we may have a state champ in the making. Along with Jim, the rest of the team, led by second man Richard Hob-litzel, placed in the top half of city competition. The Wirt track team has been hindered for many years now because of the lack of a place to run. Even with this handicap, the Troopers have turned out some fine runners. With boys such as Jim Eastlund holding down the distance races and Bob Laster bringing in the dashman victories, this year will again prove a successful one for the Trooper fleetfoots. Trackmen out for the field events also have found it hard to work to their fullest ability due to the absence of stationary field event s equipment, yet field event prospects are bright. Even with these limited facilities the team is looking forward to another victorious season and good record. Golfers Reign As City Champs Springtime is the time of year when all Wirt golfers can hear is Coach Nabhan yelling Keep your fat head down, you meatball! Because of Coach's help and assistance, though, the team has compiled a twenty-six-eleven won and lost record in two seasons, plus gaining a trophy as the 1965 City Champs. With consistent improvement being shown by the team from year to year, and three returning lettermen. Senior Fred Howell, and Juniors Jim Wilson and Joe Ertel, it seems inevitable that the Troopers will continue to reign as the city's best. Fred Howell 1964-1965 GOLF SCORES Portage W E. C. The attainment of that coveted title, upperclassmen, was ours. Assuming this new role involved many responsibilities both fun-filled and challenging. Homecoming became a joyful victory when we received first prize for our class flag. Next came term papers causing frantic weeks of worry until the day of reckoning. Every imaginable type of test worked its way into our busy schedule; the SCAT, National Merit Scholarship, and College Entrance Examinations. A diligent study of the Civil War stimulated in- terest in our American heritage. Logarithms, Giants in the Earth, and a deep probe into the Civil Rights issue played an important part in our demanding curriculum. Newly acquired driver's licenses were put into use during two bottle drives which helped to finance Fame and Fortune. Now we are looking ahead to our final year at Wirt High. With Homecoming and the beginning of the school year, we found ourselves surrounded by the demands of competence and student leadership. No longer were we regarded as too inexperienced for roles of authority, but rather, we were given important projects with expectancy of an efficient follow through. Taking advantage of our new status, we sponsored Homecoming's Trooper Tuesday with the introduction of our football team. The high point of the year, as with every Sophomore class, was the ordering of our class rings, the symbol of upperclassmen status. There is no other emotion that matches this gratifying sense of having reached an important mark. In class we learned to analyze literature and tried to apply newly developed background to our own compositions. Geometry brought frustrations, difficult problems, and satisfaction when their solution was found. In science and languages, we absorbed another year s teachings in preparation for the coming years. 140 Sophomores Into Action Top: P. Hall, V. Ham, D. Hamilton, R. Hanasard, D. Hedgren, S. Hill, G. At the year's first Pep Session, we made it quite apparent that we were Wirt High School s biggest, peppiest, liveliest Freshman class to make the giant step from eighth grade inexperience to real class unity. As Freshmen we sparked new spirit and ideas in the organization of which we became members. The “Frosh” girls were proud to soon earn the honor of being Pep Club's most reliable supporters, and our class as a whole won numerous Pep Session Cheering Contests. Our first Homecoming found us diving into projects with full force, our enthusiasm leading us to win the chain contest. While winning status and class pride, we also met the obstacles of new, and increasingly difficult courses. Algebra became a common problem, stimulating our minds to their finest absorption and production. English and biology offered a challenge seemingly over-powering, but meet it we did, and emerged to conquer our green beginnings and look forward to our second year of high school life. 144 Class In Wirt's History Top: B. The Eighth Grade year for the class of 1970 was one of preparation from two standpoints: both the extra-curricular and academic sides of school were given consideration. Cramped quarters and an extended day did not seem to hamper our eager minds. Much time was devoted to such preparatory courses as English, history, science, math, and foreign languages. Aside from the basic studies, we were offered such cultural courses as the arts, home economics, and industrial arts. With our novice year in the past, we took the reins of leadership in such Junior High organizations as G.A.A. and language clubs. Eighth Grade President, Jeff Gardner, served a dual role as leader of both his class and Junior W.S.O. The council’s second year now over, Junior W.S.O. has truly proven to be an efficient tool for teaching the role of student government in the school. At the year's close, we finished our finals with some fear but with high hopes for our coming high school status. 150 Dodge Chapel Draft Top. E. Alex, J. Allan, K. Allen, K. Allen, A. Alterwitz, B. Last September we made our first entrance to the fast-moving, fast-talking, fast-thinking world of the high school student: its size—overwhelming; its students—rushing, its activity—both frightening and exciting. Though many of our classes were in church rentals, our isolation did not extend to football and basketball games, pep sessions, student assemblies, Homecoming, McVout, or our own extracurricular activities. We became members of the junior student council and elected class officers, under whose lead- ership we sponsored our first dance. Junior language clubs, junior G.A.A., and junior sports also opened their membership to us, offering a sample of high school life. As a class we held special pride for Vince Hobbs, a fellow seventh grader, who went through numerous rounds of competition to win the National Ford Pass, Punt, and Kick Contest. Vince brought honor to the entire school and highlighted the year for his own class. 156 Wirt’s Newest Beginners Top-. D. Abased, L. Abtamson, R. Addis, M. Alpert, M. Ama- Bottom: G. Baker, R.
