Serving Troopers throughout the seven-hour day were our various professional school staffs. Secretaries and other official personnel kept busy with carbon copies, game tickets and infinite piles of absentee notes. The sound of a bell brought the maintenance crew, ready to fix a leaky faucet or unload a shipment of books. Meanwhile, tantalizing aromas from the north hall indicated an industrious cooking staff carefully preparing afternoon meals for famished Troopers. This interest in all students was continued by the guidance counselors who helped plan schedules and select colleges and jobs. Wirt sadly felt the loss of Mrs. Mary Jane Uremovich, our social counselor, who symbolized this great concern and service for others. MRS. MARY JANE UREMOVICH To Look up and not down, To Look forward and not back, To Look out and not in, and To Lend a hand. Symbolism Mr. Wayne Connaway, who has recently returned from teaching in Germany, shares one of his many experiences with Advanced English students. Miss Thyrza Otterbacher Mrs. Isabella Shirk Candidly, Mr. William Morris, now on a sabbatical leave, expresses ... Mrs. Peggy Czimer As a means of proper communication and thoughtful expression, the English language has been an interesting subject at Wirt. While being introduced to poetry and American short stories, junior high schoolers gained prospective for future studies. Freshmen, eyes glued to the dynamic words of Dickens, later sampled beginning compositions. “Reading between the lines’’ materialized as sophomores discovered literary depth and symbolism. After struggling with the classics and a research paper, juniors were prepared for the final study in English. Advanced senior students concentrated on stylism and the “oh-so” thick text, while other scholars surveyed the literature of the world. Perhaps without the use of the new library, none of these studies could have been complete. Luxurious facilities, an able staff and enormous space provided conditions conducive to learning. The audio-visual department presented film strips, tapes and movies “to enact the written word. Using these educational aids. Troopers were inspired to probe their common culture.
