What WILLIAM A WIRT SCHOOL 210 North Grand Boulevard Gary, Indiana Makes Willy Run? 1965 SANDSCRIPT We re from Willy Wirt We moke it run. We are different from other students, Wirt is different from other schools. We are sometime-clowns and sometime-scholars in and out of love a thousand times worrying, carefree, struggling— we say Forget it. Alone we search for personal goals, Yet in spirit we are always Together. 4 5 Pushing , shoving, crashing Out-of-doors To swimming, laughter, and parties To Spratt's, meetings, and friends To Oscar's and the Chapel To sunlight and freedom and Summer 6 The grumbling mass Slowly quiets, Then raises its voice again In songs, shouts, complete elation— To cheer, debate, joke, approve. We accustom ourselves reluctantly— Autumn 8 10 11 Ice Snow Freezing wind. Boots Mittens Snowball fights. Sun Slush Wasted hours. Labs Tests English themes. S p r i n 9 17 18 19 Guidance and Leadership Supervision, a prime factor in any smooth-running business, was one of the key components of another successful school year. Helping to meet the needs of the students was the Parent Teacher Association, which not only aided in communication of problems between parent and teacher, but also sponsored activities to raise funds for school projects. By attending all school functions, Mr. Chance and Mr. Grigsby formed a natural liason between student and administrator. Both our principal and assistant principal added the personal guidance which helped to make this year a prosperous one for all. Establishing basic rules and policies, the School Board served to unite the system in the common goal of improved standards. Dr. Lee R. Gilbert Superintendent, acted as commander-in-chief to join all schools in striving for the best educational organization possible. Dr. Lee R. A smile and a break make the day go faster for our custodians. Efficiently caring for our building are the night custodians headed by Mr. Mc-Cree. 24 Efficiency Mrs. Doyle Gruetzmacher Mrs. Mary King Miss Marian Biltz, school nurse, keeps a watchful eye on the health of Wirt students. Preparing students for future endeavors are guidance counselors Bert Ross, Ovaline Aaron, and Laverne Johnson. Serving Troopers throughout the seven-hour day were our various professional school staffs. Secretaries and other official personnel kept busy with carbon copies, game tickets and infinite piles of absentee notes. The sound of a bell brought the maintenance crew, ready to fix a leaky faucet or unload a shipment of books. Meanwhile, tantalizing aromas from the north hall indicated an industrious cooking staff carefully preparing afternoon meals for famished Troopers. This interest in all students was continued by the guidance counselors who helped plan schedules and select colleges and jobs. Wirt sadly felt the loss of Mrs. Mary Jane Uremovich, our social counselor, who symbolized this great concern and service for others. MRS. MARY JANE UREMOVICH To Look up and not down, To Look forward and not back, To Look out and not in, and To Lend a hand. Edward Everett Hale Retired after 25 years of dedicated servicers Mrs. Frances Huddleston, former guidance counselor. 25 Symbolism Mr. Wayne Connaway, who has recently returned from teaching in Germany, shares one of his many experiences with Advanced English students. Miss Thyrza Otterbacher Mrs. Isabella Shirk Candidly, Mr. William Morris, now on a sabbatical leave, expresses ... Mrs. Peggy Czimer As a means of proper communication and thoughtful expression, the English language has been an interesting subject at Wirt. While being introduced to poetry and American short stories, junior high schoolers gained prospective for future studies. Freshmen, eyes glued to the dynamic words of Dickens, later sampled beginning compositions. “Reading between the lines’’ materialized as sophomores discovered literary depth and symbolism. After struggling with the classics and a research paper, juniors were prepared for the final study in English. Advanced senior students concentrated on stylism and the “oh-so” thick text, while other scholars surveyed the literature of the world. Perhaps without the use of the new library, none of these studies could have been complete. Luxurious facilities, an able staff and enormous space provided conditions conducive to learning. The audio-visual department presented film strips, tapes and movies “to enact the written word. Using these educational aids. Troopers were inspired to probe their common culture. Mrs. Mary Oppman, librarian, organizes the library materials center while Mr. Richard Scheub, audio-visual coordinator, traces the whereabouts of a missing piece of equipment. 26 From Shakespeare To Steinbeck 27 Etymologists Mrs. Elsie Wendt Mrs. Florence Portillo Je ne comprends pas. . . Along with the advantages of a modern addition come new teachers and ideas to expand and improve our Language Department. Now more pupils had the opportunity to study French, Spanish, and Latin with fewer students in each class. Progressing further in the field of foreign languages were the advanced Spanish and French classes —a fifth year of study. Aiding the French students in conquering technique were two brothers from Belgium. Because they spoke only French and Italian, these boys provided us with the challenge of making ourselves understood in our adopted tongue. The experience proved to be rewarding for all. With more individual instruction and less students to demand the teachers time, the various language classes quickly improved in quality and comprehension. Everyone agreed the Language Department had taken great strides toward breaking the sound barrier of foreign language. 29 easily to attentive second year students. Fundamentals + Initiative Mrs. Teresa Hannon Mrs. Ann Carter Mr. Leonard Gorsegner Seventh grade students delve into the complicated world of mathematics. 30 -f- Practice = Mathematics Who ever thought that two plus two could get so lost in a quadratic equation or a logarithm? A few days after seventh graders bravely entered their math classes, they discovered that the fundamentals were old stuff and now challenged dimensions and beginning formulae. What's this? Five and five equals twenty?'' questioned eighth graders. But puzzlement diminished as they soon conquered foreign number systems. And then the test! High school math first opened minds to algebra s quantitative reasoning and precision; then we ventured onward to cones, planes and circles. After Euclid s geometry introduced a way of logical thinking and exploration of shapes and objects, the second year of ' alg served as the prerequisite for the climactic mathematical challenge: trigonometry and analytical geometry. Those students surviving axioms, theories and formulae through their years of studies entered these perplexing phenomena, perhaps frightened, but later confident of a solid background in the complexity of mathematics. Mrs. Roberta Nelson Mr. Edward Sent Mr. Nick Meneokis Mr. George Dunleovy Mrs. Jan Uecker Mr. Monte Foster 31 Nature— Viewed Through Mr. James Ertel Competence plus fine teachers and new facades composed the science department. Instructor Mr. Ray and his newly-equipped laboratories offered wider experiences to budding scientists and advanced biologists. The past year was definitely a challenge as students probed into genealogy, physiology, bacteriology and zoology. Physics, taught by Mr. Tweeten, was a subject which required work, concentration, and a good science background. Physicists found the course rewarding not only during the year, but as a foundation when they came in contact with more advanced subjects. While studying vectors and refraction, students made fascinating discoveries about their own capabilities. These two courses and Advanced Science were reserved for juniors and seniors who intended to major in science or medicine after graduation, and the field of science received the benefits of an excellent student-faculty relationship. “Let's see now—tadpoles in the incubator, radioactive rats in the pond water and bacteria under the hood—or is it. . 32 A Microscope Mr. Marvin Syren Mr. Robert VanWinkle Mr. Douglas Tweeten Physicists Linda Dierolf, Bob Holman, and Don Arbeen contemplate, concentrate, and still don’t come up with an answer. Mr. John Ban Miss Sandra Tallos Mr. Lawrence Hoover Facilities Combine Projects, 34 I Mr. Robert Weddell Mrs. Helen Pesavento A click of keys, a droning voice, a discussion of monetary values and free enterprise—these were common sounds from the Business and Economics Departments. The main extra-curricular project of the Economics Department was the school-wide mock election held on November 3, which was organized, directed and operated by student committees for the benefit of everyone. The Business Department continued its record of fine teaching, aided by its new facilities in our recently built addition. Individually, each taught with a sincere effort to aid every student with whom he came in contact. Together they strengthened the unique student-teacher relationship, an intricate part of Willy Wirt. 35 Efficiency and Learning Physical 36 Mr. Walter Bracich Mr. John Newton Drivers should know what makes a car run as well as how to run it instructs Mr. Jack Owen, drivers’ training teacher. Fitness Mental Alertness Development of the mind depends on, among other things, development of the body. Miss Brace end Miss Wolsh undertook the task of educating their girls in the arts of the trampoline, tumbling, wall ball, and basketball, while Coaches Owen, Nabhan, and Newton kept the boys in shape through daily drill and practice. Coaches Owen and Bracich disciplined minds to be alert and aware through drivers' training. The ability to drive an automobile has a high value in modern life and Wirt prepared its students in this aspect, also. Practical experience for young industrialists was presented by Mr. Ivkovich, industrial arts instructor, and Mr. Paloncy, who taught mechanical drawing to constructive minds. Further preparation for everyday life came for girls from the home economics room. Here the virtues of practical shopping and skillful cooking were taught by Mrs. Hook. Through physical, practical, and industrial development Wirt students received important exposure to necessary areas. Demonstrating a technique on the violin is Mr. Marshall Bender, assistant band and orchestra director. When an event such as the Christmas pageant demanded a creative background to augment and add spice, art craftsmen were contacted. Willingly they accepted the opportunity to display their meritorious skills. Talents of the speech and drama classes were presented when Dust of the Road set forth a Christmas message to audiences. The curtains closed as actors took a much-deserved bow for assembling compositions in dialogue form. Trooper musicians provided entertainment throughout the year for their music enthusiasts. Winter and spring found the choirs, band, and orchestra swaying to the beat of a rhythmic baton. When spring made her entrance, students took an active part in the Fine Arts Festival, a successful combination of talent and education in the field of fine arts. Mr. Robert 8eckman, choir director, makes meticulous last minute preparations. 39 Selected Students Seek Mary Lou Kelly, Adeane Alpert, Chris Gray and Frances Schwartzberg, members of the World Affairs forum, prepare for an upcoming discussion of Viet Nam. Bi-monthly meetings and team-teaching contributed to the intellectual backgrounds of accelerated students. Two Wednesdays a month Horace Mann hosted scholars from each high school. Thirty-six Wirt juniors and seniors participated in Joe Berg academic seminars ranging from mathematics to art history. On the first Monday of every month, six Troopers joined representatives from other Gary schools to discuss universal problems in the World affairs forum. In February a social studies department panel presented a tribute to the United Nations. The goal of a teaching triumvirate and student symposium was to give students a better understanding of the world peace organization. The Senate, led by Mike Ertel, was successful in passing legislation that benefitted every individual and in creating an atmosphere which evidenced unity. Working together the Senate conceived a unique Homecoming Week, a rejuvenated McVout, an enlarged scholarship fund— an aware student organization. A more active and effective House of Representatives was co-ordinated with the Senate by Marilyn Golner, W.S.O. Vice-President and Chairman of the House. Composing the membership were register representatives, class representatives-at-large, and club presidents; all were active participants in constructing and passing bills. Every Friday afternoon the auditorium echoed with committee reports, discussion of register meetings, and general business of the House. Guards Direct Right Turns Awareness through programs, bulletin boards, and handbooks expressed the goals of the vital Student Guidance Committee. Led by president Bob Thompson and supervised by sponsor Mrs. Ovaline Aaron, the vibrant group of twenty members opened the year with the 1964 College Night where over sixty representatives from nationwide colleges met with eager juniors and seniors. As the calendar flipped into 1965 the committee provided panel discussions presenting the many facets of Wirt. Climaxing activities was the distribution of the student handbook, which contained samples of school songs and critiques on clubs. Another group guiding Wirt students were the W.S.O. hallguards. Not only did these traffic directors keep Wirt thoroughfares clear of wandering Troopers, but they also guided our numerous guests and visitors. Whether a turn to the future or a turn to the east hall. Troopers were well guided toward their goals. Who would think that Peggy Hirschmonn could couse such violent reactions just by reading the new hall guard rules to heads Sue Baker, Judy Rein, Judy Neal, Mike Doyne, and Carol Phelps? Learning Linguists Adopt First on the LATIN CLUB list of events, is the Saturnalia, explains President Zack Cornea to officers, Norm Nabhan, Sandi Heminger, and Mike Hawkins. A new year brought a host of traditional activities to Wirt's language clubs. The first major event for Le Cercle Francois was la fete de Noel and its spirited carols. Soon fading voices were replaced by bustle and preparation for Wirt’s French conclave, and McVout's arrival and Le Petit Moulin Rouge with President Tina Glover as its hostess. President Dianna Linquist swept El Circulo Espanol members into a whirl of activities leading into the winter season as the group anticipated the annual Christmas party where carols and a play provided enjoyment for all. Singing a different tune in January, Spaniards sponsored a hootenanny for the student body and re-created the Spanish market place for McVout. Donning Roman togas, Latin Club president, Zack Cornea auctioned off initiates to the old members at the Saturnalia. This atmosphere of servitude soon diminished as Latin Club met with other Romans in a city-wide conference. Closing another year, linguists jointly sponsored a school dance and a May picnic. Presiding over the punch bowl, Cynthia Tsoutsouris, accommodates SPANISH CLUB members, Chris Sherwood, Halina Bilska, and Faye Bizanes. A Christmas pageant and a spring program directed by Mrs. Margaret Labb Jones, sponsor, headlined activities for the year. Speech Club members, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Jones , competed in rhetorical contests. The national Voice Of Democracy Contest offered The Challenge of Citizenship to Wirt students, while locally the Rotary Club set another goal for Wirt's orators. The paramount goal of F.T.A. president Mary Chulak and sponsor Miss Thyrza Otterbacher was informing members of basic teaching methods. Opening the year were a formal induction and an area Round-Up in East Chicago. A field trip to Chicago's Northwestern University, trips to Gary schools in session, and periodic visits to the Campbell Friendship House completed the year's events. Drew Kovach, Suzanne Pachter, and Annella Petkovich herald coming events. A flash of light, a muffled click, and the appearance of a figure kneeling in front of the crowd reminded us of our most valuable possessions—the photographers. To them, and the girls who worked in the darkroom, we owe credit for the photographs in the annual, newspaper, and throughout the building. Providing the students with mental images— movies, tapes, and records — was the Library Materials Center. Supervised by Mrs. Oppman and Mr. Scheub, the library became a mecca for inquisitive minds. Also gathered here were library files and audio-visual supplies as the school kept an accurate record of passing events. Echoing and re-echoing in the halls were the voices of the intercom operators who kept the school alert. They were responsible for our early morning ' entertainment’’ and last minute reminders. The whir of machinery told us that the Industrial Arts Club was creating another success. Mr. Ivkovich and President Harlan Myers guided members in constructing needed supplies and raising funds for the treasury. Throughout the year images, information, intercom, and industry comprised vital parts of the action that is Wirt. INDUSTRIAL ARTS CLUB officers, Dave Crossman, President Harlan Myers, Ron Grupe, John Ham and Bob Roth all agree that modern equipment coupled with skill produces articles of fine craftsmanship. 72 Services Apprentices Gain Experience LIBRARY MATERIALS CENTER assistants, lla Shapiro, Janice Barancyk, Andrea Larson, Susan Smolinski, Pat Seay, and Bonnie McConnell, emphasize the importance of the card catalogue for efficient research work. Not only were we introduced to a new section of school, but also to an assistant band and orchestra director, Mr. Marshall Bender. As a team, music students and supervisors strived to make certain the year would be worthwhile for all. Entertainment! Trooper talents were evident in city and statewide contests, as medals were earned by first and second place winners. Also receiving honors were students participating in the Gary Music Festival at Memorial Auditorium, illustrating again that the chorus and orchestra are essential parts of Wirt and the spirit it entwines. G.A.A.: Fun Fellowship Amid screams, cheers, and cries of elation ,G.A.A. sportsmanship is created. Under the direction of Miss Eleanor Brace, sponsor, and Annella Petkovich, president, the club has grown into the largest organization in Wirt School. Beginning with a summer car wash, Annella and her officers, Mary Lou Kelly, vice-president, Virginia Jens, secretary, and Mary Cornea, treasurer, were kept busy throughout the early fall with preparations for the year. First of the organized sports was wall ball, where class spirit, team spirit, and competition existed. Wall ball season ended, and thoughts turned to the G.A.A. Informal Initiation. Skits were given by the president and vice-president, and the board members. The seniors then presented Miss Brace the traditional bouquet of roses. Finally came the climax— the induction of new members and freshmen. Brisk winter, a new season—G.A.A. basketball began—scratches, bruises ,floorburns. Spring stirred thoughts of serving, side out, and rotate! — volleyball. Preparations commenced for the banquet, where awards and letters were given, new officers were inducted, and seniors said farewell to slightly sad underclassmen. Co-ordination was the key word of the three peppiest'' clubs in the school. At games and pep sessions, voices were louder and hopes were higher— enthusiasm reigned. Led by tireless varsity and reserve cheerleaders, the student body was inspired to attend more games and to drown any opposing voices with cheers. Sparse Season VARSITY COACHES OWEN AND NABHAN The Wirt varsity team this year compiled a record of three wins and seven losses. The record is deceptive, for those victories enabled our team to defeat last year's conference champs, retain the Victory Bell, and present the city with one of its top five scorers. The season ran dry for our squad through Homecoming, when we were nosed out by East Gary, but a week's practice brought a remarkable change. We trounced Calumet with a score of 25 to 7. The following Friday, the Victory Bell rivalry proved we meant business'' as Edison was sent home—minus the Victory Bell—with a 32 to 14 defeat. In addition to the team's victories, Wirt's Harry Shelgren racked up forty-nine points, placing third in the city. 89 The fighting frosh in action. The top of the athletic totem pole—this was freshman football for 1964, with an outstanding season of five wins. The boys battled to one draw against Horace Mann's frosh-soph tacklers. Freshman Coach Dunleavy credits teamwork, high spirits, and practice as reasons for success. Ben Pierson was chosen as the most outstanding player from the many hardworking team members. With desire and speed, the boys raced to a fifth place title in the city tournament. An outstanding addition to the team and a man to watch in the future is freshman Jim Eastlund, whose times on the two-mile course broke the standing school record and earned him a second place in city competition. The present team, composed mainly of underclassmen, and the loss of only one starter promise even greater successes for next season. COACH SYREN Top Row: R. Miller, F. Fegely, G. Ayers, M. Dacey, S. Our matmen were ready to go all the way to the finals, but luck ran the wrong way and the last man was eliminated in the final match of the regionals in East Chicago. In the dual season, the Troopers finished with a deceiving four and six record, but the boys needed only eight more points to turn all the losses to wins. Steve Pierson, defending state runner-up, wrestled through the entire regular season without a defeat. Coach Marvin Syren led the Trooper team to a fine season for the third consecutive year. Ever since Coach Syren came to Wirt, the wrestling team has been constantly improving. The school not only owes a debt to thanks to fine wrestlers, but we must also acknowledge the leadership of a fine coach. Bottom Row: T. Dingman, D. Miller, D. Fay, B. Rodgers, L. Landes, B. Baker. Coach Van Winkle returned to Wirt after a year's absence to spur the team to its victorious campaign. Coach Van Winkle’s chief assistant was team captain Bob Thompson, a junior three-year letter-man. Also carrying a big share of the work load was Richard Dierolf—a sophomore who won first place in the breast stroke in both the city and regional tournaments. After the regionals, Rich went down to Bloomington where he took eighth place in competition with senior swimmers from all over the state. As a team, Wirt placed third in the sectionals and second in the conference. Since the team was composed entirely of juniors and underclassmen, the season was a great success and the boys will be back to better the record next year. 94 Splashing frantically, Nick Odinsoff hollers HELP! Our over all record this year for the varsity team was a fabulous season of fifteen wins and five losses. Wirt closed the season in a rush, winning the last nine games, giving us our best season since 1958. This season was highlighted by the week that our team defeated both Hobart and Tolleston. In the Hobart game, the Wirt team was pressed to a double overtime—winning by one point. That game was probably the most exciting that had been played thus far, but then the boys went across town to Tolleston. Our team won that game and inflicted the first Raider loss on their home floor. The team was led in scoring by Marty Wolfson, who also ranked high in the conference, placing second out of all the schools. Coach Scheub also improved his coaching record, which now places him in the top five of the conference for the third time in the last five years. Opposition Top Row: J. Welch, R. Burchfield, J. The reserve team had an above average season, and the freshmen made up in spirit what they lacked in experience. Mr. Nabhan coached the freshmen team, a position he assumes during the off-football season. Not only is Coach Nabhan responsible for creating a successful team, but he must also teach the boys basic basketball skills. Though the boys came out on the short end of the record, they have been well prepared for future encounters. The reserve team had a new coach this season, John Newton, who came to Wirt from River Forest. Under Coach Newton, the team finished with an eleven and nine record, the nine losses being very close contests. From the records of these young athletes, Wirt’s basketball competition should be in capable hands for the coming seasons. New Coach Gain Experience Top Row: Coach Nabhan, W. Clineman, J. Woods, J. The leadership of veteran Coach Owen and assistant Coach Newton proved to be an inspiring example for the boys. The team eventually advanced to high hurdling, and-the halls were graced with white hurdles which blocked the paths of many unwary students. When all seemed lost, the weather finally broke and enabled the boys to venture out to the park for daily laps. The loss of only two seniors and the promise of outstanding future seasons from underclassmen Eastlund and Hoblitzel give the coaches great hopes for many fine records to come. 100 COACHES OWEN AND NEWTON Tape—A Cheering Crowd Top Row: L. Score Soars For Netmen Netman Mike Popescue successfully returns a volley. A well-executed shot brings a look of triumph to Clarence Dean's face. The tennis team this year proved that experience is not necessarily the best teacher. In its second year of existence, the team nearly captured the conference championship. In a drive which resulted in seven straight wins, the team was topped only by the city's two top powers—Lew Wallace and Horace Mann. Coach Troxel, one of the major factors in Wirt's winning campaign, originated the team last season. Without his efforts, we would not have been able to achieve the full schedule which he made possible. Coach looks ahead to another great record next season, missing only one letterman, Mel Brown, who helped bring in many points in the doubles competition. Although the boys went unsung throughout the early weeks of the season, their days of practice paid off as the student body became aware of our tremendously triumphant netmen. Their excellence has made Wirt one of the top contenders for next year's conference title. In Second Season Top Row: Coach Troxel, C. Dean, M. Popescue, T. Chulak, D. Zeidman, J. Wolf, 8. A part and yet apart, mature and yet immature, frightening and yet exciting: seventh grade. A struggle and a snap, rewarding and revolting, tiring and inspiring: seventh grade. As the class of 1970 descended upon Wirt, the entire school felt the vibration. Functioning as a single unit, the junior high en masse attended all activities with which it was involved, including the eighth grade basketball games and the art fair. Other activities of the year included the girls' wholehearted participation in junior G.A.A. The King and Queen Dance, sponsored by the eighth grade but attended collectively by the junior high school, was a big success and definitely a high point of the year. Reaching the first plateau, the end of seventh grade and the end of being the babies'’ of Wirt was certainly a relief. Eighth-graders questioned, What’s in a year? and were answered: new academic frontiers, new facilities, new faces. With a growing membership of 300, the class of 1969 kept abreast with the rapid pace of Wirt activities. In the classroom anxious students encountered historical wars, gerunds, and participles, and the basics of foreign tongues. Technical minds sought to comprehend the mechanisms of carburetors and batteries in the science labs, and compasses and protractors in the math rooms. Home economics, speech, mechanical drawing and physical education were also rising steps toward high school preparedness. But learning extended outside the realms of the classroom. Enthusiasts eagerly joined such junior high school organizations as the Spanish and French Clubs, G.A.A., chorus and intramurals. With the establishment of the Junior W.S.O., Rick Weiss, 8th grade and council president, conducted weekly meetings to organize activities and register meetings. With the aid of Mr. Hoover and Mrs. Schulze, offi-ers were well on their way to mastering the functions of student government. The year closed with eighth-graders conquering one frontier and preparing to meet the next. 114 Enters Wirt Top: B. Aberman, D. Abies, C. Abrahamson, S. Adams, C. Allen. Bottom: M. Alterwitz, A. Algebra and 6x + 5 = y, English and Great Expectations, and languages and bienvenue welcomed freshmen to the 1964-65 school year. Entering high school, the class of 1968 experienced these academic challenges with mixed feelings of pride and amazement. Leading his contemporaries through a grueling, yet rewarding apprenticeship was class president John Cambre. His membership in W.S.O. paralleled that of other freshmen as they joined senior clubs and organizations. Girls were greeted by G.A.A. whose wall ball united the class and pitted its spirit and energy against the more experienced upperclassmen. Boys found physical development in sports such as track, basketball and. . .football! With spring here and a year almost completed the class of 1968 looked and remembered, planned and prepared. Another Homecoming Week, another year—another experience. Freshmen began to realize that the spirit and enthusiasm attained in their first year would reach and grow until at last it encompassed the entire class. 120 Academic Voyage Top: D. Battleday, R. Sophomore Class Officers left to right: Vice-President Paula Thanos, Treasurer Linda Gorden, President Bill Cavalier, Historian Sue Gardner, Secretary Peggy Schneider. An air of excitement filled the auditorium during the first sophomore class meeting. When President Bill Cavalier called us to order we knew that finally we were a real part of the action in Wirt. The novice year now a mere memory, many more 67 ers found themselves holding offices in various clubs and organizations. One class member proved our adventuresome spirit by becoming the first underclassman to hold an executive office in W.S.O. The arrival of Homecoming found sophomores in the midst of the week's festivities hanging posters and signs announcing Red and White Day” which declared our school spirit. Teachers kept us busy diagraming complex sentences, memorizing lines from Julius Caesar, conjugating foreign verbs, writing lab reports, and proving geometric laws. Despite our demanding curriculum we still sponsored an open house, roller skating party, bake sale, and car wash to raise money for projects as upperclassmen. Sporting valued class rings for the first time, we marked the close of the second chapter in the 67 story. 126 Shout Sophs Top: A. Apolskis, A. Athens, S. Baker, J. Barancyk, B. Ben-field. Bottom: M. Expectations became reality with the first September kick-off when we officially assumed the roles of privileged upperclassmen. T2 or Trooper Thursday formally introduced our '64 football squad. Immediately preceding the Homecoming contest, photographs bearing the name and position of each team member were displayed in the multi-purpose area and later at the post-game dance. Second-floor lockers bulged with texts and assignments from chemistry, physics, advanced biology, algebra, and history. Notecards and outlines from English term papers filled every available space. The SCAT, National Merit Scholarship, and College Board examinations academically challenged alert junior minds. To finance the “Eve of the Mikado,” we sold cakes, cokes, and magazines under the supervision of President Bruce Fine. As a reward for tireless efforts as salesmen, we procured royal blue blast jackets and hats with our '66 insignia. The close of the year brought with it our first prom and a retrospective glance at goals achieved and purposes accomplished. 130 Moby Dick Top: F. Allegret, P. Allen, A. Alpert, S. Anderson, D.
