Willie is meant to be the spirit of the Class of 1954 as well as the spirit of Wirt School. He is a cheerful, helpful, fun-loving Trooper just as are all of the students at Wirt. Willie was first brought to life on paper by Connie Lathrop and then, when Connie left, carried on by Jim Hackney, our art editor. Editor Marcena Owen worked diligently to see that all members of the staff carried out their assignments and that Willie got into no trouble. Evlyn Rhea, the business manager, saw to it that a selling staff of ten members of the class of 1954 really proved to be super-salesmen. Willie was pleased to see his friend Corky Coates lead all the rest in sales. The work really began when the pictures began to arrive. They had to be measured, trimmed, mounted, and labeled. Marcenia nearly went crazy trying to keep Willie out of the rubber cement. Margaret Kirby saw to it that the copy was written and then typed in proper form. Willie often punched the wrong keys and Veda would have to type a whole page over. Finally, however, the books were all put together and with crossed fingers mailed to our publisher. We had a swell time getting this book ready and, with Willie, we hope that you enjoy our book of memories. 27
