We boarded the ship in September of '49 for our four year cruise. The cruise began with what we'll call our Freshman year. This year was the first one in which we used the new addition to our ship. We gave two dances our Freshman year. They were the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance and the Saint Patrick's Day Dance. A new social event was added during this year. It was the McVout Soiree. Our second year on the ship was even more enjoyable than the first. We were honored because Vonnie Eichorn and Pat Hademan were attendants for Homecoming. They were also Reserve Cheerleaders. Our two dances this year were the Snowball and Hearts Awhirl. These dances were a great improvement over the first two because we were getting used to being at sea. Eob Knapp and Alan Shanahan made us all feel very proud for they were the only Sophomores on the varsity football team. One of our register teachers, Miss Finn, jumped ship our second year out so that she could become Mrs. Hannan. But Mr. Meneakis appeared on the scene just in time to take over our Math Classes. And now we realized that we were finally half-way through our cruise. We sailed into our Junior year by having a magazine drive. The chairmen of the drive were Pat Egan, Dawn Markle, and Paul Scherschel. The two social events for this year were the King and Queen Dance and the Stork Club Dance. Both dances were a big success. And then it happened again in our Junior year —two of our crew members were attendants at the Homecoming. They were Pat Hademan and Donna Paniaguas. The second and certainly most important thing that happened our third year was the long-awaited arrival of our class rings. We ordered them from a new company and all of us liked them very much. This was the year that we all started a new fad on our ship. We got sweatshirts with Wm. A. Wirt '53 Troopers written on the front. This was a tragic year in the life of Bucky Weaver. First, during football season, he broke his ankle, and then, when he had nearly recovered from that, he got the mumps. Paul Scherschel added to the fame of our class by entering the Golden Gloves. He won in the subnovice division. We were all very proud of him. And then came the anxiously awaited last year of our cruise. Our class officers were: Bob Knapp, President; Herb Shultz, Vice-President; Shirley Wood, Secretary; and J;m Brakulis, Treasurer. We were very proud of Vonnie Eichhorn this year. She was our Homecoming Queen as well as the Queen at the King and Queen Dance. Paul Scherschel was the King at the dance. At the annual McVout Soiree our own Pat Egan and Bucky Weaver were chosen Miss Soiree and Mr. McVout. Pat Egan was also awarded the D.A.R. Award this year. By the time the year was three quarters over we all had our cards and pictures and it sure caused a lot of confusion. But it really just helped to add to the festivities on board. All of us had a simply wonderful time at our Prom which was the main social event of the Senior Year. Bud Pressner and his Orchestra provided the music. Another big occasion that helped to bring our Senior year to a close was the Senior Banquet. This was another b’g success. Janet Rearick and Carol Anderson were named Valedictorian and Salutatorian respectively. Now we all realized that our cruise was coming to an end and we anxiously awaited June 11.
