They have worked hard to make themselves outstanding and due to the efforts of Mr. Bell, our band director, they have succeeded. The band has been very busy participating in different events this past year. They have marched at all six of our home football games. And along about October 18, they went to the Indiana-Temple football game at Blooming-.ton. They have played for various parades throughout the city. Various ensembles have played in many programs through the city, such as a Halloween Party at the Memorial Auditorium and an Education Week program. These ensembles played at our P.T.A. meetings and Band Sponsors meetings serveral times. '« 29

Mr. Bell entered 52 members in the District Contest at Emerson School in Gary. Out of the 52 that entered, 41 brought home medals. Out of these there were 3 who went to Indianapolis to compete in the State Contest. We were proud to hear that Charles Meyette won a first place medal and two others won second place medals. This spring, they plan to go to Holland, Michigan to play at the Annual Tulip Festival. The Seniors were honored by the band when the band played for their convocation and commencement. We would like to mention that 80 per cent of the band is grade school children and twenty per cent is high school students. Chorus The year 1952-53 was a very busy one for the Wirt chorus. We got off to a fine start in November by participating with the Drama class in the Education Week program. This was presented in school as well as over WWCA. Our next big project was the annual Christmas pageant. It was an inspiring program with the traditional Christmas carols. In February came the Northern Indiana Vocal Contest. The Wirt students that placed were: Robert Voss, 1st in the 1st division; Sandra Englander, 2nd in the 1st division; Dawn Markle, 3rd in the 1st division; Mary Lloyd, 1st in the 4th division, and Ella Marie Murray, 1st in the 4th division. The Spring Festival was given on the 26th and the 27th of March. The chorus climaxed this program by singing a selection of the popular songs of 1952. The City Festival was next on the agenda in which the chorus sang on May 6th at Memorial Auditorium.
