SENIORS We boarded the ship in September of '49 for our four year cruise. The cruise began with what we'll call our Freshman year. This year was the first one in which we used the new addition to our ship. We gave two dances our Freshman year. They were the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance and the Saint Patrick's Day Dance. A new social event was added during this year. It was the McVout Soiree. Our second year on the ship was even more enjoyable than the first. We were honored because Vonnie Eichorn and Pat Hademan were attendants for Homecoming. They were also Reserve Cheerleaders. Our two dances this year were the Snowball and Hearts Awhirl. These dances were a great improvement over the first two because we were getting used to being at sea. Eob Knapp and Alan Shanahan made us all feel very proud for they were the only Sophomores on the varsity football team. One of our register teachers, Miss Finn, jumped ship our second year out so that she could become Mrs. Hannan. But Mr. Meneakis appeared on the scene just in time to take over our Math Classes. And now we realized that we were finally half-way through our cruise. We sailed into our Junior year by having a magazine drive. The chairmen of the drive were Pat Egan, Dawn Markle, and Paul Scherschel. The two social events for this year were the King and Queen Dance and the Stork Club Dance. Both dances were a big success. And then it happened again in our Junior year —two of our crew members were attendants at the Homecoming. They were Pat Hademan and Donna Paniaguas. The second and certainly most important thing that happened our third year was the long-awaited arrival of our class rings. We ordered them from a new company and all of us liked them very much. This was the year that we all started a new fad on our ship. We got sweatshirts with Wm. A. Wirt '53 Troopers written on the front. This was a tragic year in the life of Bucky Weaver. First, during football season, he broke his ankle, and then, when he had nearly recovered from that, he got the mumps. Paul Scherschel added to the fame of our class by entering the Golden Gloves. He won in the subnovice division. We were all very proud of him. And then came the anxiously awaited last year of our cruise. Our class officers were: Bob Knapp, President; Herb Shultz, Vice-President; Shirley Wood, Secretary; and J;m Brakulis, Treasurer. We were very proud of Vonnie Eichhorn this year. She was our Homecoming Queen as well as the Queen at the King and Queen Dance. Paul Scherschel was the King at the dance. At the annual McVout Soiree our own Pat Egan and Bucky Weaver were chosen Miss Soiree and Mr. McVout. Pat Egan was also awarded the D.A.R. Award this year. By the time the year was three quarters over we all had our cards and pictures and it sure caused a lot of confusion. But it really just helped to add to the festivities on board. All of us had a simply wonderful time at our Prom which was the main social event of the Senior Year. Bud Pressner and his Orchestra provided the music. Another big occasion that helped to bring our Senior year to a close was the Senior Banquet. This was another b’g success. Janet Rearick and Carol Anderson were named Valedictorian and Salutatorian respectively. Now we all realized that our cruise was coming to an end and we anxiously awaited June 11. ACTIVITIES w. s. o The Wirt Student Organization was established to promote the welfare of the school, to secure the highest possible degree of cooperation between students and staff, and to provide practical training in citizenship. The Representative Council guides the work of the organization. This body is composed of the four duly elected officers, presidents, a boy and girl representative from each of the four classes, and the chairmen of the standing committees. This Council meets every other day during the entire school year to work on school problems. The Council helps set up the Social Calendar; sponsors the Willy Whirl to welcome newcomers: sponsors the McVout Soiree where all can earn money; takes charge of candy sales; handles S.O.S. Humanity Drive; gives assembly programs on special days, such as Constitution Day and Memorial Day. The officers of the W.S.O. are Paul Scherschel, President; Paul Oates, Vice-President; Pat Egan, Recording Secretary; Arlene Augustyn, Corresponding Secretary and Treasurer. t BACK ROW B. Weaver. C. It was hard work getting pictures of everyone, writing articles, and staying after school, but it was worth every minute of it. Thanks to our skipper, Miss Armington, and our editor, Pat Egan, we were really kept working. Shirley Wood, business manager, and her assistant, Carol Anderson, did a swell job handling our money. This is the first year we've had a padded cover on the annual. The staff decided we could get them if we worked hard and sold a lot of annuals. We think it was worth it. We also changed from an engraved to a lithographed type annual and so the whole set-up was really new. Even with all the confusion we had a wonderful time. Our cruise is over and we present to you, our 1953 SANDSCRIPT. Associate Staff We really had a group of high pressure salesmen on our staff this year. In the four weeks that the annual subscriptions were on sale they managed to sell 240 copies. Herb Shultz was our high salesman, but the rest were very close behind. Our thanks to this fine group for the work and effort they put forth to sell enough books to make the work of gathering and organizing this book worth while. ASSOCIATE ANNUAL STAFF LEFT TO RIGHT—J. The staff met every other day first hour and were able to publish a paper about twice a month. They were quite pressed for space, as the old office, where newspaper staff was held, was used by several other groups of persons. At first the paper was put out with office and typing room typewriters; and the commercial depart-men mimeograph machine. Later in the year, the staff was fortunate to have assistance from the Annual staff in buying a brand new mimeograph machine. The paper immediately began to look better. Shortly after this, the Board of Education loaned us a used typewriter and the staff was able to do most of its work without leaving the newspaper office. As a special project, the Shifting Sands staff took it upon themselves to publish a program and souvenir issue that was sold at the McVout Soiree. This spring, they plan to go to Holland, Michigan to play at the Annual Tulip Festival. The Seniors were honored by the band when the band played for their convocation and commencement. We would like to mention that 80 per cent of the band is grade school children and twenty per cent is high school students. One of our most prized possessions is our Band. They have worked hard to make themselves outstanding and due to the efforts of Mr. Bell, our band director, they have succeeded. The band has been very busy participating in different events this past year. They have marched at all six of our home football games. And along about October 18, they went to the Indiana-Temple football game at Blooming-.ton. They have played for various parades throughout the city. Various ensembles have played in many programs through the city, such as a Halloween Party at the Memorial Auditorium and an Education Week program. These ensembles played at our P.T.A. meetings and Band Sponsors meetings serveral times. '« 29 Chorus The year 1952-53 was a very busy one for the Wirt chorus. We got off to a fine start in November by participating with the Drama class in the Education Week program. This was presented in school as well as over WWCA. Our next big project was the annual Christmas pageant. It was an inspiring program with the traditional Christmas carols. Bringing the season to a close the chorus sang for Baccalaureate and Ccmmencement. CHORUS BACK ROW Mrs. Lee. C. Whitlow. F. Quick. O. Kinq. D. Korenich, J. Chambers. E .Shaffer. B. Knapp. R. The Spring Festival was given on the 26th and the 27th of March. The chorus climaxed this program by singing a selection of the popular songs of 1952. The City Festival was next on the agenda in which the chorus sang on May 6th at Memorial Auditorium. Drama Drama started this year with three seniors, one junior, and eleven willing freshmen. We were very pleased to have in our class the Braschos sisters, who came to us from Germany. The first big performance was our Education Week Program. It included scenes from the Landing of the Pilgrims and The Ride of Paul Revere. The narrators were Edward Cohn, Faye Short, Wanda Hodges, Jim Harrington, and Rosalie Sammy. We also recorded this skit on WWCA. Christmas time had creeped up on us so we started our Christmas Pageant. We worked for two weeks and had the pageant completed. Norma Richeson was pictured as Mary and Tony Eikenbary as Joseph. The name of our pageant this year was The Prince of Peace. The McVout Soiree was our next project. We chose The Fatal Quest a melodrama with a lot of humor in it. The McVout Soiree was over we started on our big three act play. We chose Seven Sisters. The leading role was played by Wanda Hodges, her supporting actor was Jim Harrington. It was a big success and our whole year was very enjoyable. Miss Labb. R. Sammy. W. Hodges, L. Shaffer. The club officers for 1952-53 were Peggy Frets. President; Jack Ojala, Vice-President; and Bob Ransford, Treasurer. This year the club's most valuable member was Jack Ojala, the demon photographer. The club's sponsor is Mr. Meneakis. W Club The W Club was organized in 1950 by letter-men of the William A. Wirt athletic teams and their coaches. The main reason for the organization of the club was to accomplish the many things that these athletes felt needed to be done for sports at Wirt. It was their wish that the W Club might provide an understanding of the problems of the athletes and the staff. At its inception it was hoped that the organization would promote and set forth training conditions and regulations, and help develop sportsmanship and better living. Community projects were also to be undertaken. This year the members of the W Club chose four capable boys as their leaders. President, Bob Knapp; Vice-President, Paul Scherschel; Secretary, Jan Stenback; and Treasurer, B. G. Snyder. Together with their sponsors, Mr. Nabhan and Mr. Scheub, the boys decided to have two W Club nights this year. They were on March 6th and March 13th. The first of the evenings was for the In and Out games, that is, the Seniors and the rest of the boys in high school played against each other in a game of basketball. The G.A.A. also played their In and Out game this night. The second night was for the championship of an Intermural tournament. There was also a game between the faculty and a team from the Miller-Wirt Boosters. FOLLOW THE W—O. Wildermuth, W. Carlson, B. Voss. D. Dahlqren, J. All-mansberger. E. Shaffer. J. Conway. J. Hodges. In cases of other arranqements with Mr. Bohn it is possible to help in the office, but not for credit. The assistant may be either a boy or a girl, and it is not necessary to be an A student. They have to be on time and ready to work when the last bell rings. The assistant usually starts the work by collecting the attendance and recording it for Mr. Martin. Then they run various errands. HALLGUARDS The people you see sitting around our halls in assorted places are our hallguards. They are made up of students from the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior Classes. To be a hall-guard you volunteer your services from study hall. The duties of the hallguard are to see that students have passes and to see that no disturbances are caused in the halls. We have a head hallguard each hour to see that the students are on their posts, and who also takes roll. ASSISTING BACK ROW—R. Dolenar, E. Etchison, B. Brakulis. MIDDLE ROW—J. Finnerty. P. Eqan. J. The student in charge of assigning the operators was Marilyn Osberg. Without these two people the schedule couldn't have been carried out with as much success. All of our movie operators did a grand job this year. SHOP Mr. Paloncy's shop students are always busy. Around Christmas they built and fixed stands for Christmas trees. They help the teachers by building bookcases and fixing broken ones. They make the office passes, the ones that are shaped like bones. If it hadn't been for Mr. Paloncy and his shop students help the McVout would have lacked one of its most profitable concessions—the Spook House. The shop students are always ready and willing to give a helping hand. F.T.C. The F.T.C. stands for Future Teachers Corps. The members of F.T.C. get practical experience, such as, taking a teacher's place when she must attend a meeting or be out of her class for some reason. This does not let a student take a class all day except on rare occasions when a regular substitute can not be obtained. The students that are in the Wirt F.T.C. get chances to take classes for almost all of the teachers in the school, which gives them a good idea of the type of teaching they would like. These people are chosen in the following manner: there are 10 names taken from the highest service point holders in each class, they are then put on a special list by the Student Council. In order to get on this list, you must have a large number of service points. You receive these points for being in clubs, holding offices, receiving honors, and participating in various activities. Then the Council and Faculty vote separately and secretly to determine just who will win these honors. This Honor Roll is posted in the following year's annual. Of course there are other requisites too, besides scholarship. These are represented by the other letters on the Honor Society symbol: C, L. and S; respectively, character, leadership, and service. The ones who are eligible for membership in the National Honor Society are actually voted in by the principal, the teacher's council, and every teacher having the student in classes. This election is not a regular type of voting, but is organized on a point or plus and minus system. A sheet listing the many quali.ies necessary for membership in the society is filled for each eligible student by the people pre- viously mentioned. After the Juniors are chosen they are installed in the society during a formal induction ceremony aiven by the Seniors who are already members. This ceremony is usually held in April or May. It is a very impressive one which consists of speeches by the Senior members about the true meaning of character, scholarship, leadership, and service. This is followed by the swearing in of the new members and the presentation of their certificates of membership by Mr. Bohn. The officers of the Wirt Chapter of the National Society for this year are as follows; President, Jan Stenback; Vice-President, Donna Busse; Secretary, Shirley Wood; and Treasurer, Paul Scherschel. During the rest of the season they will see act;on against Merriville, East Gary, Griffith, Dyer, Gary Edison. Hobart, and Calumet Township. We will have Dec, Ransford, Jennings, Bryant, Griffith, and Stanton hurdling for us, Smith, Hatrak, Weislogel, and Shaffer running the dashes, Burden, Koepke, Kelly, Sargent, Dalgren, and Barnes running the mile, Smith, Teeguarden, Hatrak, McVay, Bards-ley, and Barnett running the Half-mile. Dolenar, Lip-sher, C. Coats, R. Coats, J. Penny, Massette, and Barns will also do long distant running. Carr. This year we have two cheerleaders left over from last year. They are Delaine Clapp and Nitra Tomerlin. Sharon Quint, Sally Kichukoff, and Rose Ann Tillett were reserve cheerleaders last year and since then they have moved up to be varsity cheerleaders. This is the th rd year for the Junior Varsity. The Junior Varsity is a squad preparing the younger girls to be Varsity Cheerleaders when the Senior girls graduate. After the elections for Junior Varsity were held, Jean Carr, Edith Kilbourn, and Carol Dayson became the new Junior Varsity Cheerleaders. The sponsor, Miss Sharp, and the cheerleaders usually take a trip somewhere before the season is over. This year the cheerleaders decided to buy jackets for football season instead of taking a trip. Activities for the year were varied and numerous. Looking back over the year, we remember how the girls, with their favorite dates, turned out in full strength for our annual hayride. It was the largest one we had ever held and everyone had a terrific time. But alas for the poor seniors, all the chaperones were on their wagon. We had an orchestra and all the trimmings for our winter dance, Frosted Fantasy. It really stood out among our achievements. Once again we returned victoriously from our annual encounters with Horace Mann in basketball and wallball. They have yet to win a basketball game from us. It took a lot of work and planning, but we had a great success in our swimming show, Swim Through the Seasons. Although this was the first year we attempted a swimming show, it turned out to be one of our biggest accomplishments. To end this wonderful year we had our annual G.A.A. Banquet, which we can sum up with— AWARDS!! FOOD!! and FUN!! We've really had a swell year. BACK ROW S. Schoon. S. Quint. D. Paniaquas, E. Bardeson, B. Cunningham. FRONT ROW Miss Sharp. N. He received a master's degree from Indiana University. He came to Gary where he began teaching at Froebel. Then after teaching at five other Gary schools, he came to Wirt in 1948, just in time to pilot us through our years in high school. 66 Office Staff Our cruise couldn't have been as successful if it weren't for these members of our crew. First in the picture below we have Mr. Chrisman, or Waldo as most of us know him. He was one of our secretaries until he became ill and had to leave the ship. Mrs. Stahura has taken his place and she is doing a very good job. Mrs. Rosenblum had a big job on our ship. She not only fills requisitions for the teachers but she also puts our grades on our permanent folders and ranks us according to grades. Next is Joan Dearborn, opps, that should be Mrs. Stanton, she recently changed her name. She is in charge of all the ship's money. So you can see how valuable she is to us. Then there is Mr. Martin, he is our Home Visitor—need we say more?? Next we have Mrs. Huddleston, our vocational advisor. She also helps us plan our programs according to our interests. And last but not least we have Mrs. Hady. She is our school nurse. She has seen us through all our aches and pains during our cruise. We want to thank all of them for the help they have given us throughout the voyage— STANDING—Mr. Crisman. Mrs. Rosenbloom, Mr. Martin. SEATED—Mrs. Stanton. Mrs. Huddleston.
