BOHN If you see a person around school with a cheery smile on his face, and a helping hand for everybody, it is our principal, Mr. Russell O. Bohn. We are the second graduating class to have been fortunate enough to have Mr. Bohn as our principal through all our high school years. Under his fine leadership, our school has progressed rapidly. The help he has given the seniors will never be forgotten. I often wonder how the school would get along without the dependability of our office staff. The hard work that they turn out day after day is really deserving of all our praise. It is often said that, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” None fits this bill better than our office clerk, Mr. Waldo Crisman. Waldo has been with us for fourteen years and lie’s always ready to lift that helping hand. Joan Dearborn, our treasurer, is always ready to relieve you of your excess cash. Mrs. Ina Rosenblum is one of our most dependable workers and does her best to please us all. Mrs. Hady, our nurse; Mrs. Huddleston, our guidance counselor; and Mr. Martin, our home visitor; we couldn’t do without. They’re swell—everyone of them. Page Six Key 1 eacK WIRT TEACHERS MRS. We, of the staff, remember how anxious we were to start working on our book, and work we did, from September to June. First, to keep us going, were Miss Ann Armington, our sponsor, and Sondra Carlson, our editor. Much of the credit belongs to Judy Quint, who helped with layout, and Marilyn Aldrich, who kept those demon records straight. Other invaluables included Nancy Christoff, our Art Editor, and Sherry Wilds, Activities Editor. Barbara Young handled the Classes department with efficiency, and Carolyn Fiarl and Carol Hiestand, our Copy Girls, were indispensable. Bringing us the never-ending procession of photos from Mr. Meneakis, our friendly Camera Club sponsor, were LaVonne Newton and Pat McCall. The sparkling sports writeups were written by Marilyn Voris and Keith Allen, our Sports Editors. To these, and to Don Spangler, the most astounding salesman of our generation, and our faithful Associate Staff, belong our heart-felt thanks. We present to you our Sandscript on this Senior Day in June, 1952, with the greatest of hopes—that you will come to love and treasure it through the years, for here are yourselves, your classmates, and your memories. Representative Council, whose chief function is promoting cooperation between students and faculty, started the school year off with a bang on September 17. The occasion was the annual Constitution Day assembly. The speaker, Mr. II. S. Jones, spoke on the Constitution. Chuck Burger, inducting officer, turned the gavel over to the incoming president, Keith Allen. In addition to the loyalty oaths to the school and the national constitution, an oath of office was administered to Pat 1 Iademan, corresponding secretary; Nancy Christoff, recording secretary; and Paul Scherschel, vice-president. The new faculty members, Mrs. Bush Page Fourteen and Mr. Scheub, were introduced to the student body. The Willy Whirl Dance was given in honor of the freshmen and new students. Trooper Topics were given to them. The McVout Soriee on February 22, was a complete success with the entire community helping. Students worked in art, sewing, shop and food classes. Others bought white elephants that were for sale at the carnival. The parents sent objects for sale and worked during the evening for different organizations of the school. The council enjoyed the luncheon Exchange Experience Emerson held. Student councils of the Gary High Schools were represented. As we go to press the W.S.O. is planning the annual Awards Day and Memorial Day programs and will hold the elections for next years officers. We hope that the council of next year will find the co-operation we did. i TRAFFIC COMMITTEE: Seated: M. Owen, S. Carlson, M. Lafferty, N. Mettner. Standing: A. Dye, C. Coats, J. Penny, H. Shultz. They give dub programs, assist with the Christmas pageant, as well as giving a Christmas program of their own. I lowever, these activities play “Second Fiddle” to the annual Spring Vocal Concert. This year the concert was given a special place in the calendar. Three performances were given, with 160 students participating in each. The Chorus also assists at our annual band concert, and the numbers sung at Baccalaureate and Commencement always contribute to the impressiveness of these occasions. We have good reason to be especially proud of some of our vocalists this year. Five of them, Dawn M a ride, Boh Voss, Warren Bards-ley, Sandra Englander, and Phyllis Berry were entered in the Indiana State music contest and all five walked away with either a first or second place prize. Some of our students also participated in the 1952 City-Wide Music Meet at Memorial Auditorium, in which all the Gary schools were represented. Both grade school and high school students took part in this program, and it was a great chance for all concerned to sec the work done in other parts of the city. It goes without saying that it was a good year for the Chorus, and none of us doubt that we will see big things for the future of this organization. FRONT ROW: A. Koslauskis. D. Clark, C. Warner, A. The Christmas pageant preceeded by pantomimes, monologues, and choral readings was beautifully done and awe inspiring. “Child of I ler Spirit presented on Abraham Lincoln’s birthday was a true test of the Junior Drama Class. It was greeted with enthusiasm and proved the ability of the players. The grand finale of this glowing season was a presentation of a group of four one act plays, entitled: uThe Masque Of Two Strangers , “The I bird Plate”, “Finders’ Keepers”, and “One Fine Day”, presented by the Senior Drama Class under the able direction of Miss Margaret Labb. A paper drive was held at the beginning of the year. The new band sponsors sold Christmas cards and also had a cake walk at Miller School. The main project of the year was the sponsoring of the Indiana University Band given at Memorial Auditorium on March 26. The annual Spring Concert was enjoyed by everyone, and it proved that the hand is improving every year. The band participated in several parades. The hand officers are, President, K. Allen; Vice-President, I). Glasford; Secretary, J. Romig; Treasurer, P. Scherschel; and Librarian, D. Magioudis. 'ugc Twenty Hook Club The Book Club organized soon after school began last September with about twenty-eight members. The new officers elected were J. Quint, President; J. Quigley, Vice President; L. Newton, Secretary; and C. Hiestand, Treasurer. I he highlight of the year was the annual spring mother-daughter-faculty tea. Under the sponsorship of our school librarian, Miss Magrames, the club had an unusually good year. P. K. P. The members of P.K.P. had their election of officers last spring. Those elected were: M. Bohman, President; L. Newton, Vice-President; S. Wilds, Secretary; and J. Romig, Treasurer. The organization had many activities during the year. First on the calendar was the initiation of new members. They were attired in shorts, shirts, and other weird costumes, for the informal initiation, which lasted for one week. At the conclusion of this period, a formal initiation was held. The biggest event of the year was the annual Snow Murry Dance, held at the Naval Armory. Refreshments were served, and all had a delightful time dancing to the music of Alan Isley’s band. BOOK CLUB Sitting: J. Ramos, E. Barde-son, L. Newton, J. Quint, C. Hiestand, J. Quigley, J. Miss Huber, the faculty adviser for the group, does a wonderful job in organizing their programs. Mr. Paloncy’s shop students are always on call to make or do things for the teachers or the classrooms. This year one of their nicest contributions was the pair of rostrums they made for the auditorium department, and we certainly can’t overlook their effort and great success in the McVout Soiree. The “W” Club has just been re-organized since its former start many years ago. I his year R. Allen was elected President; I). Spangler, Vice-President; R. Knapp, Treasurer; and K. Allen, Secretary. The “W” Club has not had a chance to do much due to its late start this year. Its plans for the future are big. Some of the activities the W Club members have pushed this past semester with great success were the VV Club activity night, where the Wirt Faculty played the Senior Regiment a basketball game amid much hilarity and confusion; the various Field projects such as paper drives, scrap drives, bake sales, and the Wirt Booster-Faculty softball game. There is no end to the good that this club can do in the line of sportsmanship as well as recreation and moral standards. Page Twenty Four c camera I his year the Camera Club was started and Mr. Meneakis agreed to sponsor it. Besides taking and developing their own personal pictures, Mr. Meneakis taught his members the fundamentals of photography, such as mixing chemicals and producing different lighting effects. During November and December the club made Christmas cards for members. January and February they worked on Annual pictures, also during February they took portraits and crazy pictures at the McVout Soiree. The officers of the club are President, A. King; Vice-President, D. Gibson; and Treasurer, N. Christoff. The movie operators, also sponsored by Mr. Meneakis, are a valuable service group in our school. Without their unfailing help we probably would not have had many helpful movies. CAMERA CLUB Seated First Row: D. Mag-ioudis, J. Yohe, T. Sta-hura, D. DeMichele. Second Rrow: S. Hoch, D. The score at Merrillville was 40 to 12. The game wasn’t our biggest loss. Our main tragedy was when J. Weaver received a broken leg. The loss of Jack Kelly at the end of the first semester due to graduation slowed us down momentarily but we soon got our bearings and began to roll again. When the season ended we had seven wins and twelve defeats, but more important we placed Jerry Beres on the All-Conference Bas- ketball Squad. With the coming of graduation we said good-bye to Captain Jerry Beres, Dick Thews, Jack Cunningham, Don Glasford, and Lloyd Lewis. We shall miss them but we will continue to play the game with good sportsmanship and great drive to do our best and win once again for our school. rage TlUrty One COACH NA9HAN 3. At this meet Jerry Beres tied for first in the pole vault and Dashiell Gibson took fourth in the broad jump. The next meet was the Gary Edison quadrangle. In this meet we scored 33 points. Beres again tied for first in the pole vault and second in the high jump, while Gibson took second in the broad jump. Dick I hews took second in the shot put, B. G. Snyder fifth in the hundred yard dash, Gorden Teeguarden fifth in the 220, and Bob Barnes third in the mile run. In the “Little hive meet we scored 24 points. Beres, Gibson, Thews and Teeguarden again came through for us, with the relay teams adding extra points. At the Goshen relays and the city outdoor meet Beres scored with a third and first respectively. Resulting from cancellations, we held only one dual track meet, which was with East Gary. The elections for this year were held in the fall, since then Delaine Clapp and Nitra Tomerlin also became members of the Varsity Cheerleaders. Miss Mary Sharp, our faculty adviser, has helped our squad of cheerleaders immensely since she came here the year before last. She has taken the cheerleaders to the Cheerleaders Conference held at Indiana University in Bloomington for the last two years. The Junior Varsity came into effect two years ago. I he purpose of the Junior Varsity is to prepare the younger cheerleaders for varsity leading. As the Senior girls graduate, members of the Junior Varsity are moved up to Varsity to fill their places. Rose Ann Tillett, Sally Kickulofi and Sharon Quint were the Junior Varsity this year and have done a grand job. Some of those most remembered are as follows: officer installation; hayride, which winter weather postponed; rough, tough, initiation for the freshmen; candle light ceremony with pledge and song, (the song was written by the President, M. Voris), Tuesday evening, activity night for all high school classes. The games most played are volley hall, basketball, wall-ball, and there is a little square dancing. G. A. A. We see ourselves not at all scared by witches and goblins, hard at work on our first social event of the year, the Hallowe’en Dance. We see the next event that brought fame and a little fortune to we Freshmen, the St. Patrick's Day Dance, a great success trimmed in green. We remember how happy and honored all of us felt when a member of our ranks, Jerry Beres, made the Varsity basketball team. When we became Sophomores, we remember walking in our new front door, and watching all eyes grow big at what they saw—a brand new addition. , . , , . . ° J Seniors began our long wait ... to June. SENIOR OFFICERS: Left to Right: Pres., Charles Clark; V. Pres.. William Wright; Sec., Elizabeth Pepoff; Treas., Lloyd Lewis. In February, “Putt'’ Allen, as master of ceremonies encouraged heart-fluttering and toe-wiggling at our St. Valentine Sock 1 lop, something new to Wirt. Our Junior year was filled lirst with the magazine drive, a sure way to help finance our annual. After we had counted up our profits, we went on to the next challenge of school life. In January our royal blood was discovered with Jerry Beres and his queen, Carol 1 liestand holding court. Ostervesede, Germany sent us Margaret Kaleita in January, who soon became one of us. In March, another honor came to “Putt” Allen and Jerry Beres; they were chosen for the Calumet All Conference Football Team. The stork club . . . the peak of high society . . . the clink of cold cokes . . . low lights ... a canopy and sidewalk cafe for the gym. Spring came, and time for royalty. The King, Queen and their court were given their honors at the King and Queen Dance. Then came the big event in every Junior's life . . . Class Rings. Our ring committee fancied a new setting for our crest, and now Mr. Wirt reposes on stones more beautiful than the Hope Diamond. Nancy Christoff pleased us all by winning a dress design contest, an oratorical contest and being Governor of Girls’ State. September, 1951 came, and we anxious May . . . and our Senior Banquet, followed by our long awaited Prom. The theme—Blue Moon; the mood—mellow; the prom—success. Award Day stopped the whirl of Senior activities just long enough to bestow the Bausch and Tomb Awards on Marilyn Aldrich and Alvin King, and the D.A.R. award on Nancy Christoff. Our Class Day was very memorable with “Putt” Allen heading the celebration. This was followed by an impressive Baccalaureate, held in the school auditorium, with Rev. F. L. Simon delivering the sermon. Then, June 17, Commencement—our high school days were over, and Destiny held us in her hands. ★ MARILYN ALDRICH Valedictorian; Magazine l r i v e Chair. 3; Honor Society 3, 4; Spanish Club 2, 3; W.S.O. 3; McVout Co-Chair. 3; F.T.A. 3, 4; Annual Staff 4; Newspaper Asso.
