The Troopers opened their grid campaign by dropping a 31-7 decision to Merrillville. 1 lollingsvvorth saved Wirt from being whitewashed by flipping a 24 yard touchdown pass, with one minute left, to Pete I look with Dave Gustafson converting. The Dyer game found W irt hitting the win column as we eked out a 13-12 victory over Dyer. Lloyd Spurlock hit paydirt from the four yard line in the first quarter. He then threw a pass to Paul 1 look in the second frame good for 17 yards, and a touchdown, (jus’s game winning placement was good. We then fell under the might of East Gary by a 20-6 margin. W ith two minutes left, Hob Weaver pitched from the eight into the endzone to Pete Hook for the marker. The next was our homecoming game with Gary Edison. A near sellout crowd saw an inspired Trooper team come from behind at half-time to score a 13-7 victory. The first ball handed off to Pete Hook sent him ploughing some 14 yards into the endzone. The game winning score was a last quarter 20 yard pass from Gene 1 lollingsworth to Paul Hook, (jus converted. Watch T! le Frosh And Soplis C oming Kathleen I Iadcman, were in half-time ceremonies sponsored by the Miller-Wirt Booster Club. We then traveled to Michigan City, and found St. Mary's none to accommodating as they trounced the Troopers 33-12. George Sherman tallied for the Troopers from the seven in the second quarter on the end around. Then in the last quarter a 1 look to Hook end around pass was successful tor a touchdown with Pete throwing, and Paul receiving on the 20, then scampering the remaining yardage for our second counter. In the last two games the injuries began to show their toll as we were then blanked by Griffith and Hobart 19-0, and 25-0 respectively. Football honors were bestowed upon several Troopers for their sparkling performance of the grid season. Pete Hook was awarded all-conference end. Captain Bill Eichhorn, Jim Lewis, Jim Whited, Henry Cook, and Paul Hook received the distinction of being elected for all-conference honorable mention.
