STOP Do not mean to rub your fur wrong way STOP Advise all animals affected. 1950 Sandscript Staff We really should call our zoo a dream house because that is what green blackboards, green exit lights, up-to-date classrooms and equipment mean. This fine physical setup is matched by the spirit of cooperation between students, faculty and others. We hope we can keep the building looking always new, but we hope the cooperation becomes an old story. Hallguards, lockers, lunch in the park, homework, dances, games, the traveling trophy initiated by Edison, the field trip, the Christmas pageant, the Spring Concert, “Our Hearts Were Young and Gay”, Bums' Day, being on W.W.C.A., the McVout Soiree ... all of these are part of the year. We went to classes, paid book rental, and took tests. That is part of the year too. How we wish we could have pictured them all. Here is your year. Page Three Dedication of new wing, October 4: Top. Page Kiglit Owls-W ise, X itty anc I W inning Here’s Howard Youngheim in the trophy case giving some of his secrets to the owl. They should be good because Howard has been high magazine salesman for two years. As freshmen we felt like ostriches. However, we did perk up for our Halloween Dance. Inspired by this success, we had shed much of our greenness by the time we had our St. Patrick Day Dance. In our sophomore year, we finally gained recognition and aided our treasury by selling pencils and purses. Jack Marposon, Don Karl, Ann Peterson, and George Sherman were our officers during our very outstanding junior year. Really on the beaver side we had a most successful Stork Club Dance, a sell-out King and Queen Dance, and a bang-up magazine drive to earn money for our yearbook. September 1949 came and we pranced around the building as only really proud animals can. We were seniors. Commencement, our goal, was in sight. We had 1'om Cook, President; Bob Weaver, Vice-President; Carol Palmer, Secretary; and George Sherman, Treasurer. In common with many animals, we hibernated, but spring found us hustling eager to make up for lost time. The sale of class pins gave the treasury a boost. The class committees started functioning. With the Senior Banquet on April 15, the senior activities could be said to have started. At this affair I lenry Overbeck was an excellent toastmaster. Next came the eagerly awaited event, the This was followed by an impressive baccalaureate. Senior Prom. We danced to Ken Nolan’s music at Marquette Park Pavilion on May 26. Class Day, our last in school was memorable. I bis was followed by an impressive baccalaureate. Then June 21, COMMENCEMENT ... a beginning instead of an ending. Coach I latrak believes we had a very good basketball team in spite of the fact that we lost many top notch players. Our six and three conference record showed us doing better than many expected. i lighlights of the season were defeating Concordia at Fort Wayne and beating East Gary, conference champs, in an overtime. Prospects for next year are very poor with nine of the varsity ten graduating. To Coach Nabhan highlights of season were defeating Dyer, and our arch rival, Edison, in our homecoming game. Holding I lobart for a scoreless tic for the first half was a topper as was watching green first year men perform so capably under pressure. 1 lard work and team spirit will tell whether our inexperienced squad will have a successful season. The Troopers opened their grid campaign by dropping a 31-7 decision to Merrillville. 1 lollingsvvorth saved Wirt from being whitewashed by flipping a 24 yard touchdown pass, with one minute left, to Pete I look with Dave Gustafson converting. The Dyer game found W irt hitting the win column as we eked out a 13-12 victory over Dyer. Lloyd Spurlock hit paydirt from the four yard line in the first quarter. He then threw a pass to Paul 1 look in the second frame good for 17 yards, and a touchdown, (jus’s game winning placement was good. We then fell under the might of East Gary by a 20-6 margin. W ith two minutes left, Hob Weaver pitched from the eight into the endzone to Pete Hook for the marker. The next was our homecoming game with Gary Edison. A near sellout crowd saw an inspired Trooper team come from behind at half-time to score a 13-7 victory. The first ball handed off to Pete Hook sent him ploughing some 14 yards into the endzone. The game winning score was a last quarter 20 yard pass from Gene 1 lollingsworth to Paul Hook, (jus converted. Nancy Demmond, Homecoming Queen, along with her attendants, Marcia Sinkler and Page Twenty Six Watch T! le Frosh And Soplis C oming Kathleen I Iadcman, were in half-time ceremonies sponsored by the Miller-Wirt Booster Club. We then traveled to Michigan City, and found St. Mary's none to accommodating as they trounced the Troopers 33-12. George Sherman tallied for the Troopers from the seven in the second quarter on the end around. Then in the last quarter a 1 look to Hook end around pass was successful tor a touchdown with Pete throwing, and Paul receiving on the 20, then scampering the remaining yardage for our second counter. In the last two games the injuries began to show their toll as we were then blanked by Griffith and Hobart 19-0, and 25-0 respectively. Football honors were bestowed upon several Troopers for their sparkling performance of the grid season. Pete Hook was awarded all-conference end. Captain Bill Eichhorn, Jim Lewis, Jim Whited, Henry Cook, and Paul Hook received the distinction of being elected for all-conference honorable mention. Paul Hook also received all-state honorable mention and was voted most valuable football player by his fellow teammates. I KOS11-SOP1 1. FIRST ROW: D. Glasford, B. Knapp, A. Shanahan, D. Spangler, J. Because of this, Pete was also elected most valuable member of the 1949-50 basketball team. Jerry Beres and Bill Eichhorn received the distinction of getting honorable mention on the all-conference teams. We were lucky in some of the games, in others the breaks just didn't go our way. We finished third in the Conference with a 6-3 record, losing to I lobart and Edison by one and three points respectively. Perhaps our best game of the hardwood season was against I lorace Mann, 56-53. Other heartbreakers of our hardwood campaign were losing to Gary Roosevelt 47-45, to Emerson 47-43, and to Froebel 39-31. Outstanding games of the season were victories over Griffith, East Gary, Lowell, and M crrillvillc to give us undisputed possession of Bob Weaver, Jack Marposon, Ole Hopkins, Ray Rearick, and Gene Hollingsworth performed beautifully when they had the chance. The reserves had a green but well balanced team with Gene Hollingsworth, Dave Gustafson, George Pavol, Cliff Lewis, and Larry Brauer doing the bulk of the scoring in the five victories recorded. Don Glasford, Herbert Thomas, Dave Milosevich, John Moore, Dick Thews, and Ernest Dillon also saw much action, doing their share of playmaking and scoring. Page Twenty Nine FIRST ROW: J. Moore, G. The Council believes that we would come along faster if every student decided to be his own keeper. Individual responsibility makes the W. S. O. go. When students accept this discipline from within, watch us travel. At the traditional Constitution Day ceremony in September we took oaths of loyalty to the Wirt and the United States Constitution. During this month we also had our Stand-Up Party. During Education Week we visited Edison and Tolleston Student Councils and had a return visit from Tolleston. At Edison, the Edison Student Council suggested the idea of a traveling football trophy between Edison and Wirt. This victory bell was pre- sented to Wirt at a general assembly here on March 14. Since the entire school is the W. S. O.. with the Representative Council acting for all students, doing things together is the fashion. This pulling together was seen in such projects as these: getting out the W. S. O. Gazette; promoting the skating party for the Art Department; getting out a questionnaire; promoting a field trip to Chicago for the entire high school; holding general assemblies; holding the McVout Soiree to make money for the class treasuries; opening the Rumpus Room during lunch period and supplying some basic equipment. President Bill Eichhorn, the Representative Council, and the Booster, Election. Social, and Traffic Committees made a record for the year. Page Thirty Five SENIOR DRAMA I ICS GROUP ONE: K. The Christmas music and the carolling we shall long remember. We also appreciated their performance for general assemblies. On May 9 the Chorus gave concerts at Wheeling and Hebron. Something is always going on in the auditorium, but the Christmas pageant was something special. Miss Labb’s, “The Prince of Peace” put us in a proper holiday mood. The Junior Dramatic Class under the direction of Miss Stevens capably produced “Little Women”. The cast had fun, and the audience was more than satisfied. On April 19 and 20 “Our Hearts Were Young and Gay” was presented by the Senior Dramatic Class working with Iiss Labb. 1 he hilarious adventures were projected by a fine cast with Joan Whited and Nancy Christoff playing Cornelia and Martha Ann Bicknese Page Thirty Seven usic usic BEGINNING BAND FIRST ROW: R. Fowble No one can overlook tlie service and the help you have given in your years at Wirt School. Your part has been an important one. ou taught us the principles upon which our government is tounded, and you showed us the relation of these to student council work, thus helping us to become better citizens. You taught us the qualities of a good public official to enable us to wisely choose our representatives. Your teaching is important because it affects our daily lives. Sometimes you thought your job thankless. It wasn’t and it isn’t. The appreciation has always been there even if we did not voice it. Thanks, Mr. Fowble, thanks a lot. We elected our staff after we had observed all members at work for a few weeks. In October we sent Nancy Demmond, Irene Ferreira, Tom Cook, and Jim Chapman to the Indiana High School Press Association Conference at Franklin College. Mrs. Ferreira, Irene's mother, was our most gracious and capable chaperone. Of course, it hasn't been all work and no play. We had a wonderful Christmas Party with lots to eat. We discovered the boys were cakemakers as well as cake eaters. At the beginning of the second semester we elected these juniors to staff membership: Bertha Conway, Patti Jo (jrimes, David Milosevic!!, and Fmmett Sponsel. In addition to helping us, they worked out ideas for the 1951 book. Another second semester event was our trip to the cover company in East Chicago. This was a highly successful jaunt.
