27U andsctipt 1949 WILLIAM A. WIRT HIGH SCHOOL GARY, INDIANA ifljis Js (Jhe ecor cl Of Out Tin’s year brought many changes to William A. Wirt School students and staff members. The constant pounding and drilling that threatened us with insanity has developed a grand new addition to the west wing. As we view the progress of this fine new building, we can see that our tortured hours in typing and social science were well worth it. Building, however, has not been limited to the erection of the new wing. In our classes, our sports, and our activities we have been creating creditable records for our beloved school. With students and faculty building together, The Wirt Student Organ- ization inaugurated many desirable changes. The greater number of students participating in activities is further evidence of our school’s growth. We are justly proud of the outstanding records in sports, music, speech, and art. All of these build memories as do class sessions, dances, general assemblies, P.K.P. initiation, Bums’ Day, club meetings, the Christmas pageant, Tom Warrillow as Santa Claus, the explosion in chemistry, trips to the park, visiting in the halls, and that last mad dash to class before the last bell. With all of this building, we present our account of the year, 1948-49, as experienced in William A. Wirt School. Page Three Miss Huber shows art project. Grade school students have eyes for nothing but the stage. cS ome oings Walking in and around the new addition started last July. This west wing will provide fourteen more rooms. Page Four iJeamivo ll iTutns Si he if'liek Miss Marian Henderson, our genial home visitor; Mrs. Marjorie Hady, our gentle school nurse; Miss Barbara Rowland, helpful clerk in charge of supplies, pupil folders, and daily attendance; Mrs. Mary Lou Carroll, efficient treasurer for Wirt and equally good secretary for Miller; Mr. Waldo Crisman, a Wirt Institution, who has supervision of lockers, bus tickets, files, and reports; definitely out in front is Mr. Russell O. Bohn, our principal, whose infallibly good judgment, efficient direction, and wise understanding have endeared him to students and staff members. Under trying conditions, Mr. Bohn and the faculty have done a marvelous job. We wish we had the space to record all of the many fine services that were performed. We welcomed most gladly Miss Choncoff, Mrs. Conway, Mrs. Courtright, Miss Henderson, Mr. Nabhan, Miss Pembroke, and Miss Stevens. When the industrious Class of ’49 started its freshman year, we elected Teddy Ballard, President; Charles Hess, Vice President; Barbara Allen, Secretary; and John Newton, Treasurer. The ’49ers wowed the student body of Willy Wirt when they gave the first event of the year, the Halloween Dance, which has set a precedent that is pretty hard to beat. In that same year we gave the St. Patrick’s Day dance. Our sponsors were Mrs. White, Miss Finn, Mr. Paloncy, and Mr. Fowble. Our social life during the course of our sophomore and junior years was handled somewhat differently. We had no class officers and merely sponsored different dances, two of which were the Valentine Dance and the Pan-American Fiesta. During the latter, we staged a mock bull fight in which Donn Krebes and Bill Stern (this reads in order of their appearance) took the part of the bull. During our junior year we gave two dances. They were the May Dance and the main dance of the year, the Junior Stork Club. There was also a Prom, but that was given by the seniors of ’48. At the Junior Stork Club we had a stage show and, if you will pardon the expression, a Dance Band, Gene Goforth and his boys. The money making projects during the year were forcing students to buy our t-shirts, beanies, sweat shirts, and pencils. As the Class of ’49 embarked on its senior year, we elected John Newton, President; Dennis Teeguarden, Vice President; Barbara Allen, Secretary; and Bob Palmer, Treasurer. Given in our honor was the King and Queen Dance followed closely by the Senior Banquet at Vogel’s with Bill Stern as toastmaster. The Prom, which was held at Marquette Park, proved to be the biggest event of the year, with music being provided by Ken Nowlan. The junior class expressed their delight of having the seniors depart, by giving the Senior Farewell. They say that every dog has his day and the seniors are no exception. Their day was proclaimed Senior Day, but the seniors knew that every day was their “day”. Following this momentous day was Baccalaureate, giving us a memorable message. Then came the day that all students look forward to, Commencement, the final reward of twelve years of reading, writing, and arithmetic. 1'age Ten • BARBARA ALLEN • TEDDY BALLARD Valedictorian; Honor Society 3, 4. Page Twenty Eight On Constitution Day, September 17, the student body pledged loyalty to the United States Constitution and to the Wirt Student Organization. President Eli Marposon presided. Mayor Eugene Swartz, the main speaker, was introduced by Mr. Fowble. The organization’s constant aim has been to have all, (students, faculty, and other staff members) work together building a democratic unit. Much has been done; much needs to be done. The Wirt Student Organization has not yet worked out a set-up for grade school participation, especially needed in the seventh and eighth grades. On the credit side can be mentioned the working out of such problems as tardiness, absence, hall order, and lunch hour recreational need to the mutual satisfaction of students and faculty. Those who serve on the Representative Council, the administrative body, are the four duly elected officers, the four class presidents, two representatives from each class, and the chairman of the standing and special committees. The four standing committees, (Booster, Election, Social, and Traffic) work closely with the Representative Council. In addition to many council meetings, several general assemblies of the entire student body have been held. Before the term ends the Wirt Student Organization hopes to initiate a plan for recognizing service to the school. John Newton acted as chairman of this committee. ELECTION COMMITTEE: L. Penrod. N. At Christmas time, these Chorus members sang for the pageant and caroled through the halls. Through the year, several have sung at various community events, thereby adding to Wirt’s glory. The climax of the year will be the spring concert. To the Chorus. Mrs. Lee gave generously of her talents as always. “Who’s got my script?” . . . “Rehearsal tonight.” . . Sounds from the Drama Class. Winning seven out of eight starts, the Troopers took the Lake-Porter Conference trophy. In the first three games against Griffith, Tolleston, and Merrillville, our hoys scored 65 points to the opponents’s 0. I his proved that our tough defense and rugged offense would be hard to beat. Hie city took notice as we maintained this policy throughout the season. The Troopers breezed (East Gary will not agree) through the next two games, East Gary and Crown Point, with little difficulty. The next game, with Valpo, brought our one and only defeat of the season. After whipping St. Mary's 26-6, Merrillville was the only team between Wirt and the trophy. The final game was a see-saw contest featuring excellent offense on both sides. With a five point lead, and time running out, an additional touch down pass cinched the game and the Lake-Porter Conference Championship. Honorary captains for the year were John Newton and John Manor. Dave Donley was voted the outstanding player. Teddy Ballard led the city with touchdowns scored for the duration of our season. Dependable linemen were Hargis, Witham, and Eichhorn. The Hook twins and Beres did a good job of holding down end positions. On both offense and defense, was Stein as left halfback. As a reliable and accurate center, Whited filled the bill. Kcre .man and Wendt showed top form in kicking the conversions. The team could not have been a success without the aid of Dykstra, Cook, Krebes, Kolveck, Hunt, Spurlock, and Carlson. Also significant in the victories were the ever-ready Reserves who now have their own victory badges. The titles above tell some of the story but not all. Each of us had special responsibilities, but we all worked on the job that needed pushing at the moment. Selling and managing bakery goods, popcorn, and other refreshments was done by Barbara Guenther, Jim Hady, and Joe Hunt. For the Sandscript Follies, the show and the program booklet, these staff members did special work: Joyce Hinchman, D’Maris Thornton, Eli Marposon, Joe Hunt, Barbara Sargent, and associate member, Margaret Overbeck. D’Maris Thornton and Nancy Demmond had the hardships of Editor-in-Chief Stuart Baruch Business Manager Joyce Hinchman Asst. Bus. Mgr. Robert Hargis Asst. Art Ed. John Newton D’Maris Thornton Nancy Demmond Carol Evans handling the National Studio Pictures distribution and returns. Marilyn Leech and Joe Hunt donated special earnings. Stuart Baruch had many duties in connection with these activities as well as making cost analysis and keeping track of our resources. The major portion of the work on the dummy was done by Barbara Allen, Marilyn Leech, and Bob Hargis. The latter two did the division pages. Barbara Sargent was the chief of photography assignments. Eli Marposon and Bob Hargis prepared the engraving layouts. Ray Carlson and Jim Hady pasted the final dummies. Barbara Guenther and Marilyn Leech set up the underclass panels. Carol Evans had charge of supplies and the library. Back Row: Mrs. Greenwald, E. Marposon, J. Manor, B. Allen, J. Hunt, D. Thornton; Front Row: J. Newton, B. Hargis, M. Leech, B. Guenther, S. All of us had copy asignments of some kind, but Joyce Hinchman and Barbara Allen did most of the final editing. The senior summaries and the senior class history were the work of Barbara Allen, Barbara Sargent, Joyce Hinchman, and Eli Marposon. These were all tough jobs, but so also was the job of getting identifications complete and accurate, which were prepared by John Manor, John Newton, and Joe Hunt. John Manor and Barbara Allen wrote sports’ copy. Newton, Hargis, Hunt, and Thornton helped the faculty and W.S.O. copy. Other copy was written by Nancy Demmond, Carol Evans, Barbara Guenther, Joyce Hinchman, Jim Hady, and Ray Carlson. A figure of great importance is Mrs. Green-wald, who has held our group on an even keel throughout the whole ordeal of publishing this book. We never could have accomplished the job without the help of the associate staff. Barbara Guenther kept a complete record of work done for the book, and presented the names to the entire staff. Fifteen members were voted to associate membership: Kenneth Barwig, Winnie Curley, Jean Erlandson, Margaret Hook, Bill McCall, Betsy Olson, Margaret Overbeck, Bob Palmer, Lydia Penrod, Ray Rebeck, Ted Rogers, Diane Stempniak, Dennis Teeguarden, Pat Weller, and Bob Whited. We are thankful to all in the school and the community who gave us help and encouragement. We hope you like the book.
