Although they may be gone, their memory still lingers with us. The 1965-66 Roundup has been published to retain this memory of our friends, activities. and faculty of our high school year. This year has been a victory for some, while yet, it was a defeat for others. Becoming an A class school raised our standards, as well as our competition. As a united student body we met this challenge and while there remained improve- ment we achieved many honors through this year. The seniors will leave WHS, but will be replaced with new seniors, Even though we leave, we will still remember our years of education, but also remember our role as an individual who still leams from others around us. The Roundup staff has worked hard, with extra hours on their own, but these hours are indeed small when we remember we are recording history for WHS. The staff hopes our students enjoy the Roundup as much as we enjoyed gathering the infomation for its contentsr God Bless You All J ofYa4z' Joanna Hart Editor Ng: . I ,. Throughout the years, Mr. Williams has gone about the WHS campus cleaning the rooms, picking up the grounds, and making repairs when necessary, making our school as comfortable and attractive to the out- sider's eyes as it is to our own. We thank you, Mr. Williams, for though you are seldom seen, your presence is felt by the students and we appreciate your part in making our school 2- what it is today It is to you we dedicate our annual i me , V 5, M ,'.' , my. im.-565. . .R A W ,vhs , J. 3' ' 3 .L'. xg- . It is gratifying to see the growth in- tellectually and physically, that occurs in our students during the school year. My hope is that this growth will continue throughout your life span and that we have given you the desire and ability to use this growth toward a better community for all of our citizens. JOHN SCI-ILO TFELD i O ' In the future this yearbook should bring back happy memories of the past year to the faculty and students of Willcox High School. This publication is one which we should be proud and happy to have as a record of our accomplishments during the 1964-65 school year. In 1937, he came to Willcox and taught science, Spanish and directed the orchestra. He served as principal - superintendant for 19 years and then became the Spanish teacher we all re- member. We not only learned about the Spanish language, but also the people and the customs of the Spanish-speaking coun- tries from the stories and pic- tures of his extensive travels. He had a habit which I used to identify him. His laugh! After I set up an appointment for two hours later that afternoon, I cautiously asked, Aren't you Richard Bedolla? Yes, he boasted. Sole owner of Richard's Beauty Shops, located in every important city in the states. Then came that familiar laugh again. Still he did not recognize me, so I thanked him for the appointment and said I would be back later. Leaving the shop, I headed for the newspaper stand, but my thoughts were interrupted by another familiar-looking person calling out. Help the Air Force Relief Fund. Buy a few pencils to help the underprivileged. Observing closer, I recognized the owner of the voice. Bob Anderson, selling pencils? I told him I'd take 5 pencils. He said, 2.5O please. I laughed to myself, Bob hasn't changed a whole lot, at least he's doing real good. , Later in a quiet restaurant I observed the headlines on the daily paper. STRIKE IIN CENTRAL PARK. Scanning the article, more familiar names ap- peared. It seemed that millionaire Ken Dunagan wanted to buy Central Park and build a ranch. This way he'd be close to the city, but still have his wide open spaces. The New York City Mayor, Tina Frazier, refused, so Russell Mahoney, foreman, and the cowboys went on strike. The paper listed the names of the strikers, who were also well-known to me.,Paul Blanke, Duane Cunningham, Ross Estavillo, Joe Gonzales, Richard Latvergne, Mike Martinez, Robert Perez, Richard Ramirez, George Sanchez, Larry Horton, Curly Vasquez, Jerry Newsome, and Pat Gutierrez. I wondered if they were on strike or having one big party. At the bottom of the article, they had a remark concerning the capture of a rustler, Mike Hubbard. He turned to rustling, because it was much more profitable than ranching. His new brand was -O. Another article caught my attention. Bobby Reno, agent for Philharmonic Orchestra, had just hiredwQ2a,nny,,,Mc.WilliMams-as lead baritone player for the orchestra. Danny always did like that long-haired stuff. In the church section, a small paragraph read: Three missionaries in the Congo who were reported missing have been found. The missing persons, Gary Mortenson, Raffie Berberian, and Danny Higgins were found quietly resting under a large tree. MAY THEIR SOULS REST IN PEACE. Another article contained information about the Hell's Angels. They had had a motorcycle race to determine the best driver among the females. Collette Dickerson and Connie Moreland tied for lst place and both wanted the award. Sooooo to determine the winner they are having a brawl between them for the conclusion. They always did like to make things interesting. In the Women's Section they had put in a small notice: To whom it may concern. On channel WXYZ. the great debaters Kert Moore and Mike Michael are debating The Common Miseries of being World Famous Playboys. I wondered, Why would this interest women? Continued on page 94 93 Terry Bryant has the leading role for the Shakespearian play Romeo and Juliet. They gave him a cincher and a wig with a little make-up and he's the best actress on Broadway. Another interesting article involved Maloo O'Conner Grant Hudson Brenner Martin Sinatra Hope Skelton Lewis Damone Benny who just divorced her 10th husband. By now her alimony is about Elil00,000 amonth. Pretty good for a beginner. At the top of the following page, they had a full length picture of a shapely young lady in a bathing suit wearing a ribbon with Miss America inscribed on it. Beneath the picture the article remarked that Miss Connie Vesley, Miss America, was visiting New York in her tour of the United States. I guess once Connie got in the spots she couldn't shake it. In the sports section Bobby Nelson and Eddie Bryce have just won the coveted Davis Cup ina thrilling game of Doubles. They won with a set score of 22-20 and 44-40. Robert Holland, who is now the World's Champion Cowboy, retired. It seemed he was tired of all that publicity. Turning the page, a picture of five tall basketball players caught my attention. Below the picture were the words: The Harlem Clowns have been replaced by top five comedians, all of whom played together in high school. Mike Donnelly, Jackie Rottman, Steve Zagst, Ralph Bedolla, and John Blain have captured the hearts of millions in their unique way of playing basketball. Charles Mike is now star half back for the Green Bay Packers. They went to the finals with the Baltimore Colts this year. They gave them a real hard battle. Turning to the want ads section, I found some very interesting material of past acquaintances. Wanted-Two peanut venders desire to purchase 3,000,001 peanuts. Two nuts to a shell only. The driver Mary Alice Simpson, informed me that she and Tommy Allaire collaborated and are running a Red Taxi Service. They have red cars to replace the yellow ones. Back at the Beauty shop, I satdown, when a distinctive looking character walked in and sat next to me. Hello Marilyn, I smiled. How are you and your work? Well, being a fashion model and parttime beauty counselor is really keeping me busy. she replied. Relating what I had learned about our former schoolmates, I asked her if she knew about some of the others. Well, she began, Tony' Benevidas went to Saudi Arabia and has become a big wheel. He thinks he is a sheik, with camels, tents, a private harem and the whole works. Zena Bolin is now caring for several hundred kids. You know, the goat type. She has a big farm, and specializes in breeding goats to get those rare types. Mitch Crow is sole owner of a nightclub. He calls it Crow's Nest. He hired Dennis Ward to play his clarinet for part-time. The other half of the pro- gram involves Danny Riggs on his guitar. Another pair of our former classmates have a discotheque known as the Zan Bizi A .go-go. Jim Cook and Carolyn Fraker are the proprietors. They specialize inlshort legged go-go girls. Candy Coleman, Bo Logan, Lynn Duncan, Beverlee Fenton, Marsha Kuhn, and Tessie Saponara are the main features. Marilyn laughed. A while back the whole group was taken to court for causing riots among the male customers and fights from the female customers. They won on the basis of a sign above the door. ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK. Jill Masonheimer was their lawyer. She really did hand over forceful persuasion to the judge and jury. About that time Richard turned on the TV for the daily kiddie show presented by Gary Bowen with his accompanist, Geri Pratt. They invite four-and five- year olds to the station and have a regular nursery happy time. A beer company sponsors their show. Johnny Hoover, president of the company, advertised his freshly brewed with mountain dew drink. Marilyn laughed, From what I hear, that company's going broke: Johnny keeps drinking up the profits. Between shows a bulletin came on about Mike Meyer winning the presidency on Meyer Island. Mike was the only person there, but he believed very strongly in democracy. Then Roy Gentner came on with a familiar looking blond. Become a blond, he sighed, They have more fun. All at once the front door burst open and John Lane dressed in black tights, sunglasses, no shoes, and a beard, came running in breathlessly. Hide me, the man from UNCLE is after me. Why the danger '? Marilyn asked. I am the man from AUNTIE he replied running out the back door. UNCLE United Neurotics Chasing Legal Educators. AUNTIE Association of United Neurotic Thinkers in Interest of Education. Next on TV came two cute little girls singing Roly Poly you'll never be, eating our health food with low-calorie.'f, ' eM17?E?5nx and Rosemary Lawson, owners of H and L Healt w-gre., the sponsors of the Jim Brown Show. Jim, who replaced Ben Casey, was now the heart throb of every female in New York. He has a i Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde personality to please everyone who watches. Marilyn interrupted the commercial and said, Janet Dabbs joined the Peace Corps and went to Red China. She's putting forth an effort to convert the Commies. They are doing the same. From what Ihear, it's quite a battle of words, mainly because of a language barrier. Glynda Nolan now has a Karate school. She has a new technique. Instead of using their hands they just stomp the boards with their feet. Another commercial came on. ,ThiS.-ti1L1Q JeanwGilnlore andpDqnna Warden W'-339 ,.21fiY91115,i,S ing Red,m4White , and Blue Hondas , especially for Hell s AngAels,X Their ,mottq, 6ii IMeet THE Nicest 'iP'ei6pIe 6iM'aTH6nd i'Q 'giggc'-isar,4j'f'f P, About this time Louise Thomason, secretary to Marilyn, pipediup and safa, Let's turn the channel and watch Sally Speelman's show. What's her show? I questioned. She is a famous wrestler who challenges any male in the nation. So far she has a record of five wins and no losses. Louise replied. Susan Poteet finally got to marry Harry. Marilyn said. Then she lowered her voice to a whisper. The reason for the delay was she had to dispose of the bodies of the former millionnaire husbands. Another one who is also married is Mary Jo Wootan. She is the world's youngest Grandmother. Her adopted cat had babies. Marie Spencer is still married and she hasn't changed much. Especially her driving. Gwen Johnson went to Hawaii and became life guard on Wakiki Beach. I told them. Boy, I bet she has a rough time dragging in those drowned surfers! Robert Sheppard is enjoying his life in the Navy, especially since Connie Jones joined and became a Wave. Marilyn remarked, The other day I had a chance to model western clothes on Joyce Wingate's quarter horse ranch. When I got on the plane, there was a cute red headed stewardess who served us. Later I found out it was Dixie Smith, former blond. Dixie said she had more fun as a redhead than a blond. Candy Jones joined the Ku Klux Klan, not because of their purpose, but she likes the flavor she gets roasting her hot dogs at the cross burningsf' What ever happened to Chick Panchalk'? I asked them. Well, Marilyn stated, Last I heard, he was tired of the hustle and bustle of this city life, so he left and went to the South Pacific. I am not exactly sure of his present occupation, but I believe he's gathering shells on the beaches. On the take-off of our 3rd journey the new passengers who boarded our planes of education were Larry Hortan, Gordon Anthony, Robert Perez, Marie Spencer, and Richard Ramirez. Taking-off on our 4th journey some more of our fellow students joined our course and in ever increasing numbers. They were John Blain, Roy Gentner, Raffie Berberian, and Ross Estavillo. Danny McWi,1lul-iams also joined that flight. Lawil - lohn Panchalk, Janet Dabbs, Jill Masenheimer, Candy Coleman, -n flight on our 5th journey four more fellow passengers joined our group. Half way through our education course which was our 6th journey, we picked up Gwen Johnson, Candy Jones, Robert Sheppard, Mitch Crow, and Mike Hubbard. In our 7th journey only one classmatejoined our course in education. He was our own Andy Lewis. Two -thirds through our journey we rested and went without gaining new passengers. Then we checked our courses for the remainder of our trip. As we began our high school years in the 9th journey, we acquired Wanda Terrell Donna Warden and Tommy Allaire. That year we also moved to a accommodate our increasing number. Our second course in high school which was our lOth journey of education included only three who climbed aboard our plane. They were Pat Gutierrez, Mike Donnelly, and Tina Frazier. Nearing the end of our journey our number was increased by the addition of Beverlee Fenton, Steve Zagst, Duane Cunningham, Joyce Russell Mahoney, Charles Snyder, Charles Mike, Gary Mortenson. Wingate, Lynn Duncan, Bobby Reno, Susan Poteet, Richard Lavergne, On our last and final journey we added the finale of our students to our plane of education. As our course in education comes to an end at least as the class of 1966 we will recall our 12. year flight across the sometimes blue and other times cloudy sky of knowledge. We will recall the fun we had as well as the values we obtained.
