Mr, Eikenberry The Student Council, a representative group of the student body, is comprised of the student body officers Cthe president, vice-president and secretory-treasurer this year also represented the Senior Classy and two council members from each of the other four classes, The Council this year has served not only as a representative group but also as a Smdent Court, At the beginning of the year an Honor Code was established which served as the foundation of the court. This is a new achievement in student body goverment in Willcox High School and has proved very successful. The Council also formulated regulations and enforced their provisions. The student body president attended the annual President's C'onven- tion in Yuma, where he took an active part in the discussion and debates. They considered vital problems confronting the student governing bodies in the state. Many new ideas were brought up, and some of them have proved very successful. Next yee.r's convention will be held in Flagstaff. The Council also selected the cheer leaders for school activities instead of having a class competition to determine them. Jean Maddox and Constance Colanan handled these duties this year. This year under the efficient and capable leadership of Melvin ' Masilko and his co-workers student goverment in Willcox High School has reached a new high in honor, success and achievanent. We sincerely hope it will continue to enjoy it and even greater success in the fufure, W M X UW QM J Q --- .45 W -hi K N fl! Miss Hazel Ahlgren Zz5ti::D I ' ' Say, who hasn't heard of the great Senior Class of 'h1? If a person - has anything at all to do with the high school he has to have some connec- tions with them. nWhat do they do?n you say. The Senior Class has so many representa- tions in the different divisions of the high that it takes an adding machine to count them. Included in these are the Student Body officers, the Gentian queen, the FFA queen, the 'W' Club officers, the president of the Gentian Club and the president of G. A. A. Consider also our preponderance in sports. We had eleven men in first string suits in fottball, with nine of them on the starting line- up. The presence of these seniors will be sorely missed next year. In basketball we had four lettermen. In track, baseball, and tennis both boys and girls were well representated. Then there is our musical and dramatic ability. Representing our class at all-state band were Hardy Kirbyi Dick Thompson, Bill McAleb, and Marie Nicholson. On December 6 we presented our play 'Life Begins at Sixteenn and broke all standing records for attendance and gate receipts. This play was headed by Hardy Kirby and Jean Maddox as the leads. Hardy also received a superior rating at the Thatcher Music Con- test and will represent our class in the vocal end. On April 2 we went on our Ditch Day and really had a grand time. We took off around four in the morning and arrived in Tucson before seven. We had breakfast and then visited San Xavidr Mission and the Old Tucson Movie Set. Most of us took in a show in the afternoon, and then we met for dinner at a Mexican restaurant. At the skating rink that evening is where we really had a good time, Later the social whirligig started to swing. We were guests of the Methodist Churchs the Juniors enteretained us at the banquet and promg and the Rotary Club entertained us at lunch. We have set all kinds of records and marks for the students who come after us to aim for. Not the least is the l9hl Roundup. To those students we wish the best of luck and sincerely hope they succeed. lil' Fl- C Lflbb HI5 FCPRY - We started to kindergarten in the fall of 1928, and the class has grown larger as we have traveled to reach a higher mark than theone we made the year before. As we started our fir st year of school in kindergarten there 'were eleven of us: W. L. Cook, Henry Takagi, Gladys Powell, Joan Maddox, Alaire Browning, Velva Fraker, Mabel Ward, Teddy' Cexen, Robert Dunlap, Bona Joan Moyer, and Billy Winfrey. Miss Helen Ward was our teacher. We were thrilled to think of going into Grammar School with Mrs, Randall as our teacher, where Vilena Tucker, Dick Ellis, David Schol- field, Fern Canidy, and Talitha Snith joined us, Dick left at their end of the year to attend Stewart School, and Fern and Billy also left us. On to the second grade where we thought we were quite 'grown up.. James Kuhn and Jean Adair Reno joined us there, and at thevbeginning ' of the second semester Marie Nicholson, Gene Lewis, Melvin Masilko, Viola Tucker, and Donald Gilbert joined us, but Jean Adair' Reno. was later promoted to the third grade, All the Spanish 'second -,gr ader s joined us. Bill McAleb, who had come from Arkansas to liverin Will- cox, also entered our class, Ernest Miller joined us also this year. In the fourth grade we had Miss Keeth as our home room teacher, and Mrs Coleman came to Willcox that yearas principal and gave us a real helping hand through our remaining grammar school days. Billy Belcher, Mary Bidegain, R. O. Williams, Ed Kuhn, and Margaret Kimzey answered roll calls with us this year, but Mary- and R. O. journeyed elsewhere at the end of the year, 31011 the fifth grade come along for the second time. Our school was spring of this year with an epidemic Stanley Adams entered with us at the with Miss.Powell as our teacher closed for some time during the Oi' Scarlet fever and measles. first of the year. M Our sixth grade passed rapidly with Irene Barnett, Ruby Rae Green, and Betty Jean Greenwood as our new classmates. Later Dale Eggnan and Sonny Swanner entered our class. At the end of the year Mabel Ward left us and moved to Tucson. r ' f ' New the seventh grade, which was our last year down at the grade school. Dick Ellis reentered our class, but when we counted noses we found three of our classmates--Betty Jean Greenwood, Ruby Rae Green, and Irene Barnett--had moved away and entered other schools early in the year, Dale Eggman finished the term and moved away, and Bama Soto dropped from our ranks, and Bona Jean moved tof Bonita., I New came the last and best year of grammar school, when Glenn Harbour, Isabell Tuck, Francis Shrode, Onita Stephenson, Wilbert Gardenhire, and Jack Hendricks were our new students. Later in the year Geraldine Wells joined us for a short period. At last the big day arrived, and we graduated from grammar school with blue ribbons. We were new looking forward to being School for four years. ' simdents in the Willcox High ' Our high school years began with a bang and have been one all four years. In our Freshman year our faithful qaonsor, Coach Miller, led usthrough the struggle with the sophomores, who were trying to initiate us, but of course we came .out on-top. It was hard for us to settle down to work, but when we finally did we discovered that we had among us the uproaring bunch from Dos Cabezas and Cochise. When we finally toned them down, we discovered that they were pretty smart and a real asset to our class. Lee. and Ray' Gardner moved here from California, and Jean Lane ,came from St. David. 'Ihenks to Coach Miller, we had some pretty' swell times on picnics and at parties. Our Sophomore year started out with Coach Miller as our sponsor, but he was transferred to Yuma in the middle of the year, much to our y regret. 'Coach Goodman took his place. We had big times this year with the Freshman-initiation as our first big undertaking. Our boys' and girls' basketball and baseball teams won in the interclass tournaments. ,, Mr. Williams'was, our .sponsor in our Junior year. With his good ideas '-interest in our affairs we had a very successful year. Every- body had -good' times at-our parties and picnics. Lessie Maye Stone enter ed the second saneister., 'L ' , OlJ.1 'Pl.QI',' l'heHenp.eoked Husband, was a big success. We again won the interclass basketball and baseball tournaments., On May 12 we gave our Junior-Senior banquet and prom and entertained with a Spanish motif, Everyone had' a grand time, and we began looking forward to the banquet and prom when we would be Seniors. We all agreed that we had been the best class during the year. Although almost everybody's car broke down, we had a grand time. Some of our members, Herbert on the baritone horn, Peggy, Connie, and Helen on clarinets, helped represent Willcox in the All-State Band. The edict of' the Sophomores was that we would roll up our pants legs, go barefoot with our big toe wrapped with green ribbon, put on our shirts backwards, and the girls were to wear pigtails tied with green ribbon and green fingernail polish. 'Ihe story of this play is woven around a naive young man known as Button Alexander Woodhouse, whose socially prominent family consider him slightly unbalanced in a mental sort of way. lhe wor t that can be said of him is that he would raidxer be considered a useless eccentric than spend his young life in a mad quest for stocks end bonds, only to arrive at middle age wiih wealth, a bulging waist, and golf, He tries to limit his ambition to easy chairs, good food, and homely philosophyg but there are conflicting forces within and around him. Soon he is beset by wealthy women who try to force their hobbies upon his restful days. Then he runs aww from an antique collector, only to bump into a girl with some new variety of free verse, and evades his brother with a bag of golf clubs, only to fall into the hands of an amateur psychologist who needs him to experiment on. His only diversion from this madcap life is his association with the hired help of his brother's home. However, everything barns out in Button's favor, and he finally establishes himself in his own way and to his own wishes. All the parts in the play were ably played, and the production was one that is worthy of our sincere congratulations. lhe play was directed by Paul Holmes and Mr, and Mrs. Stauffer. LaVern Isaacks was stage manager, Bob Bliss sales managerg Donald Gilbert advertising managerg and Miss Pipes was in charge of decorat- ing the stage and azpervised costumes. The band, under the able direction of Mr. Maynard, has made much progress this past year. Starting with simple exercises, for the benefit of beginners, the band improved very rapidly and won a rating of Superior in the Class B Division of the Gila Music Festival. Besides a sterling performance at contest, the band has played for several social functions in this communityy Among these was a spring concert held in the High School Auditorium, April zz, to help raise money to send several of the band members to National at Fresno, California. ' A Ten cf the band members were among .the students of Arizona who were chosen to make up the first Arizona All-State Band. This band, under the direction of Dr. Bainum of Northwestern University, re- presented bands from many of the leading high schools of the state. It presented a concert which was broadcast over' the Arizona Network on Decanber 14, after two days of strenuous rehearsals. We can in- deed be proud of' our band members who were chosen to go. Several members of the band went to Tucson on Ilarch 29 to participate in the Tucson Music Festival. Although no ratings were given as this was not a contest, everyone made e. fine showing. U..' -- 4 XX XX 4, A S'1UDENT'S VERSION OF A FACULTY MEETING HELD FEBRUARY 29, 1941 'lhe faculty menbers of Willcox High School had come to their social hour following a tedious business meeting, Mr. Eikenberry broke the ice by this comment on the popularity-of our amateur actressess 'A senior with his first chorus girl is like a baby with its first toy: he always wants to lick off the paint. 'What isn't so bad, said Mr. Eber. 'While looking over some Freshman test papers I found the following recipe for flunks: Take eighteen weeks' bluff, Stir in several absencesg Combine with plenty of inattentiong Flavor well with moonlight auto ridesg Add plenty of' dates: Bake with a teacherfs hot temper and Serve cold with disappointment At the end of the semester. Well, I must say, observed Mr. Eikenberry, that our Freshmen are rather bright. Just last Tuesday I made the statement that ammonia in the eyes makes than snort, and Lovell Brovm looked at me with a twinkle in her eye and said, 'I need some in my brain. ' I must say, put in Coach, that I have found a new definition, given by none other than Junior Don T. 'What is the definition of a straight line'!' I asked. 'One that doesn't have a bend in it' came back Thompson, after no end of mental effort. Joe Anaya puzzles me, put in Mr. Stauffer. He wants to know if Robert Burns is related to Side Burns. 'I've composed a little maxim after eight months of grading snap test papers, says Mr. Jordan. OBVIOUSLY it applies: ln promulgating your esoteric cegitations or articulating your superficial sentimentalities beware ef platitudincus ponderosity, eschew all conglomerations of flahxlent garrulity, suggestive or apparent. IN OTHER WORDS, speak plainly, clearly and briefly. Don't put on airs. Say what you mean and mean what you say. And DON'T use big words. Here Miss Pipes offered a health-giving recipe which T. Snith is said to have heard over the radio. It goes: Hands on hips, place one cup of flour on shoulder. Raise knee, depress toes and wash tho- roughly in one cup of milk. Add flour, count raises, lower left foot, and mash two hard-boiled eggs through a sieve, repeat six to ten times. Roll up into the size of a marble. Inhale one-half teaspooniul of salt, one level teaspoonful of baking powder, one cup' of flourg then, breathing naturally, exhale and sift, Steam for thirty minutes, remove, put in the refrigerator and serve frozen. Mrs. Barnett contributed her bits Last week I attended a Gentian meeting. lhe subject of beauty came up. I said Q,-just for fun and to see how the girls would reactj that I thought all good-looking girls were con- ceited. Velva F. exclaimed, 'Why, Mrs. Barnett! I am not at all conceit- ed!' I regretted that I had caused her embarrassment. Mr. Maynard, who had been waiting rather impatiently for an opportun- ity to make his speech, now stated that he had a new addition to his sto: of knowledge: I was helping Marie N. write a theme in study hall. Here is the definition of a grazmnatical kiss that she gave meg 'A kiss is alw a pronoun because she stands for it. It is masculine and feminine gender mixed, therefore common. It is a conjunction because it connects. It is an interjectiong at least it sounds like one. It is plural because one always calls for another. It is singular in that there is nothing else like it. It is usually in apposition with a caressg at any rate, it is sure to follow. A kiss can be conjugated, but never declined. It is a preposition because it governs an objective case. It is not an adjective for it cannot be compared. It is, however, a phrase that expresses feel- ingo ' n If you don't like these jokes, And their dryness makes you groan, You should stroll about occasionally And make some of your own, recited liiss Ahlgren, as she awakened Mr. Eikenberry to tell him it was time to adjourn. lfiklk Bill: Are you a back seat driver? Connie: Indeed I'm not. Ifll sit right where I can grab the wheel if you don't do what I tell you. Allan: I've sort of a feeling I've danced with you before somewhere. ' Talithas So have I. The pressure of your foot seems familiar. A. D. 'liay I have this dance? . F Marlyn: Yes, if you can find someone to dance with. Lee Gardner: Nc girl ever made a fool of me! Joe Anaya: Who did then? Mrs, Barnett: Use a sentence with the word 'fascinate, ' Swanner: There are nine buttons on my vest, but I can only fascinate. .6 y 'wif M' 1 4 X if QV i: ,,x QQPU T: Ear 1 HE Y A 4-X, i .yt -H., ,f-. : 1 .
