i rf V pp- H V . a n Oft . L.I ' ' V ( The Boys ' Glee Club, under the excellent direction of Mrs. Edna Kellogg, as usual had a very successful year. The Glee Club sang for the P.-T.A. Christmas pro- gram and Student Body assemblies in the fall. In the spring we were highly honored by being asked to sing at the California-Western Music Educators Confer- ence on April 5. Our Glee Club is one of the few organizations singing four-part songs. We also sang at the annual Spring Concert in May here at Willard. On behalf of the graduting members I would like to thank Mrs. Kellogg for her remarkable patience and untiring work with us. I would also like to thank my fellow officers, Dick Adachi, Vice President, and Keith Robinson, Secretary, for helping me this term. Steve Chandler, President. Girls ' Glee Club Listen ' . Who ' s singing? Hurry! It ' s the Girls ' Glee! We love to sing together and give programs for others. It has been fun taking part in the festivals and concerts with the other schools. Our arranger and director, in fact the mainstay of the Glee Club, is Miss Bonney. Each semester the girls elect a president. Last fall May Hessing presided and this year Seeley Dole was president. She played some lovely flute obligatos for us. Patsy Kennedy and Betsy Cannon were the other officers. Where there ' s music in the air, Like a joyful, carefree song, And you hear it everywhere, You are happy all day long. Frances Clark. 16

Student Court The purpose of the Student Court is to try those students who have been issued tickets by Student Control Officers for violation of Student Control Rules. The court this year has been very successful. We have had excellent cooperation from the students of Willard. The court tries to judge offenders as fairly and impartially as possible. All defendants are given a chance to plead guilty or not guilty and to state their defense. The sentences differ according to the seriousness of the case and the standing of the defendant, his grade in school and whether he has had previous tickets. The sentences given to the pupils who violate these rules are not necessarily for punishment, but rather to help guide them in obeying the rules for the best interests of all students. The judges of the Willard Court also serve on the Berk- eley Bicycle Court at the Hall of Justice on Saturday morn- ings. The function of this court is to try bicycle violations for which tickets have been issued by Berkeley police officers. The court is made up of the following: our sponsor, Mr. Burke; associate judges, Paul Hofmann, Edna Blankenship, and Donna Price; bailiff, Troy Beretta; desk clerks, Lynn Hannaford and Margaret Hannen; and sergeants, Jeanie Cosby, Tania Fowlks, Lorraine Makishima, and Chenita Lus- ter. I have enjoyed this term as Chief Justice very much and Scholarship Society The Scholarship Society as you can see, Is a growing group of more than three Times twenty-nine, with room for more, There ' s even room for forty score. To join this group your grade points must be Anywhere, from 2.00 to 3.00, This society of two groups consists. You can get in the second if the first you missed. In the lower group your scholarship is good, But work a little harder and then you could Get into the first with a higher score, See, it really didn ' t take much more. In the lower group you have to strive To get grade points from 2.00 to 2.5. In the upper group your aim should be From 2.S to the highest, 3.00. If in the upper group you can stay Through every term, all the way At the end of H-9, will come to you The hard-earned, golden W. SUKEY BARNHART. wish to thank Mr. Burke, Mr. McClellan, and my fellow court officers for their help and cooperation, without which the court could not function. Kirby Brown, Chief Justice. 15

Willard Orchestra Ik This year Willard has its usual excellent but larger orchestra. We played for the P.-T.A. in October and for the February graduation. Other appearances were at the Northern California festival competition in San Francisco, the annual Spring Concert and the June graduation. Small goups of orchestra members were active in public performances, as a trio or soloists, and many are members of the Berkeley Schools orchestras. It truly has been a wonderful year with an expert con- ductor, Mr. Caldwell. Seeley Dole. Willard Band At the beginning of last semester, our band started practicing marching for a Halloween Parade at Le- Conte elementary school, which was very successful. After this we started practicing for a parade which was to be held in Oakland on Armistice Day. Although it was raining that day, our band was not discouraged and we played in the bus in which we were to go to the parade. This news actually reached newspapers in New York which stated Band Plays in Bus. It was printed below a picture of our band playing in the bus. Since that time we rehearsed a march, Com- mander, the Slavonic Folk Suite and the overture, Mandalay for a competition in which many orches- tras and bands from different parts of California played on April 30 at the San Francisco Junior College. Charles Bean. 17
