Caldwell. WILLARD JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Ptiblishcd by The Students of WILLARD JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA BERKELEY PUBLIC LIBRARY Principal ' s Message President ' s Message Again this year, Willard pupils have made a fine record in many fields, and brought credit to themselves and their school. In scholarship, Gold Ws were awarded to 16 High Nine pupils, the largest number ever awarded. Many other pupils made outstanding records in scholar- ship and citizenship. A number of pupils took part in essay, art, and industrial arts contests; our teams made good records in sports, and our music groups reached a high standard in concerts and in competition. Our High Nines were prominent in all of these ac- tivities, and we know that they will continue their good work as they go on to high school. H. N. McClellan. During the past semester as president of the Student Council, I have enjoyed working with Mr. Sitkin, Mr. McClellan, and the members of the Student Council. It has been a pleasant as well as an educational ex- perience. Our student Association has had a successful year. School assemblies, paid for by our Student Body Cards, were of an exceptionally high order. Dances and the Sports Carnival were most satisfactory. The number of students participating through the purchase of Student Body Cards was excellent. I would like to thank our sponsors for their patience and cooperation. Best of luck to the High Nines of Fifty-five in Berkeley High School next year and those remaining here at Willard. Richard Adachi. Faculty MRS. ABBOTT Latin, English, Social Studies MR. The Art Club The Art Club is made up of boys and girls who want an extra opportunity to do art work. It meets Tuesdays, dur- ing fourth period. The 2 5 members are guided in their work by Miss Blu- mert, the art teacher. The Art Club projects for this year were: Halloween win- dow painting for the South Berkeley Merchants Associa- tion; 70 Christmas and 5 0 Easter posters and 136 menu covers foi the Veterans ' hospitals; bids for the Rally Com- mittee, Girls ' League, and the FI-9 Dinner Dance, and the printing of the Target cover. The Art Club serves the school and the community and at the same time its members have fun. Frances Clark, President. The main purpose of the Camera Club is to teach students how to take better pictures. Also, we try to learn how to use different cameras. We try to widen the use of our own cameras by using added attachments such as lenses, filters and flash. Our members make use of what they have learned by taking candid and action shots for the Target. We take pictures at school dances, assemblies, special events, and on Spring Day. Paul Hofmann, our able President, has served the Camera Club well during this past year. We wish to thank our members, the faculty, Mr. James, our advisor, and Mr. McClellan for making this a successful year for the Camera Club. Judy Ward, Secretary. FHA Through participation in the Future Homemakers of America, Willard girls are preparing for the most impor- tant occupation in our country — that of homemaker. Chapter activities this year have included a cookie sale, a joint installation service with Burbank, and a Christmas party for mothers of members. In the fall, two of our members attended a two-day state convention at Asilomar. In March, seven girls jour- neyed to San Francisco to an all-day section meeting. Our club is looking forward to its third year at Willard. President Muriel Nelson Vice President Judy Miklebost Secretary. Diane Gist Treasurer Irene Avotins Historian _ Linda Poole Junior Red Cross J.R.C. was very active during the year 19 54-19 5 5. The J.R.C. appreciates the efforts of all who helped out. We would like to summarize what we did during the year: Wood Shop: Made 2 5 lapboards and 2 5 ping-pong padles. Metal Shop: Made 7 5 copper ashtrays. Seiving Class:Made numerous skirts, blouses, pajamas, and stuffed animals. Art Classes: Made 13 5 menu covers, 70 Christmas posters, and 70 Easter posters. J.R.C. Work Shop: Made 100 clay ashtrays, 10 posters for Fund Drive, enamelled 7 5 copper ashtrays, 60 clip boards, numerous leather purses and portfolios, and 60 dec- orated cans for vases. Students participated in Flower Day in November. In March an assembly was put on for the lower division. Pupils contributed $84.0 5 to our Fund Drive. During December Willard pupils filled 160 gift boxes. Susan Crapser. Student Control The purpose of our student control organization is to promote the safety and welfare of each student while passing in the halls between classes and during the double lunch periods. Student control officers are also responsible for the proper use and parking of bicycles on the school grounds. Student control officers are authorized to issue tickets to these people who delib- erately break the rules of the school. Before a ticket is issued, the pupils are given a chance to try it over if they have done something wrong. But if these pupils continually break the rules, they are issued tickets which are sent to the court where these students are tried by the student court. The Student Control Officers also serve as Junior Traffic Police at street crossings, insuring the safety of the students while they cross the street. It has been very enjoyable serving as Chief of Police at Willard this past semester and I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to Mr. Burke, Mr. McClellan, and the faculty for their cooperation, and also to my fellow officers. The ranking officers who served during the past Studen t Council The Student Council is the governing body of the school. It is headed by the President, Vice President, Secretary and the other Committees and their com- missioners. The Student Body or Council is made up of Representatives from every Advisory. These Repre- sentatives from the Advisories in turn are assigned to different Committees on the Council. We have enjoyed very much working with Mr. Sitkin, Mr. McClellan and the rest of the Faculty during the past semester. Dick Adachi, President. Steve Phillips, Vice President. semester were: Captain, Keith Robinson; Traffic Lieut., Louis Smith; Aux. Squad Lieut., Steve Chandler; and Sergeants John Roper, Mike Stoops, Tom Fukuya, Bob Nash, Morris Kosakura, Don Viers, and James Nohrn- berg. Troy Beretta, Chief of Police. 14 Student Court The purpose of the Student Court is to try those students who have been issued tickets by Student Control Officers for violation of Student Control Rules. The court this year has been very successful. We have had excellent cooperation from the students of Willard. The court tries to judge offenders as fairly and impartially as possible. All defendants are given a chance to plead guilty or not guilty and to state their defense. The sentences differ according to the seriousness of the case and the standing of the defendant, his grade in school and whether he has had previous tickets. The sentences given to the pupils who violate these rules are not necessarily for punishment, but rather to help guide them in obeying the rules for the best interests of all students. The judges of the Willard Court also serve on the Berk- eley Bicycle Court at the Hall of Justice on Saturday morn- ings. The function of this court is to try bicycle violations for which tickets have been issued by Berkeley police officers. The court is made up of the following: our sponsor, Mr. Burke; associate judges, Paul Hofmann, Edna Blankenship, and Donna Price; bailiff, Troy Beretta; desk clerks, Lynn Hannaford and Margaret Hannen; and sergeants, Jeanie Cosby, Tania Fowlks, Lorraine Makishima, and Chenita Lus- ter. I have enjoyed this term as Chief Justice very much and Scholarship Society The Scholarship Society as you can see, Is a growing group of more than three Times twenty-nine, with room for more, There ' s even room for forty score. To join this group your grade points must be Anywhere, from 2.00 to 3.00, This society of two groups consists. You can get in the second if the first you missed. In the lower group your scholarship is good, But work a little harder and then you could Get into the first with a higher score, See, it really didn ' t take much more. In the lower group you have to strive To get grade points from 2.00 to 2.5. In the upper group your aim should be From 2.S to the highest, 3.00. If in the upper group you can stay Through every term, all the way At the end of H-9, will come to you The hard-earned, golden W. SUKEY BARNHART. wish to thank Mr. Burke, Mr. McClellan, and my fellow court officers for their help and cooperation, without which the court could not function. Kirby Brown, Chief Justice. 15 i rf V pp- H V . a n Oft . L.I ' ' V ( The Boys ' Glee Club, under the excellent direction of Mrs. Edna Kellogg, as usual had a very successful year. The Glee Club sang for the P.-T.A. Christmas pro- gram and Student Body assemblies in the fall. In the spring we were highly honored by being asked to sing at the California-Western Music Educators Confer- ence on April 5. Our Glee Club is one of the few organizations singing four-part songs. We also sang at the annual Spring Concert in May here at Willard. On behalf of the graduting members I would like to thank Mrs. Kellogg for her remarkable patience and untiring work with us. I would also like to thank my fellow officers, Dick Adachi, Vice President, and Keith Robinson, Secretary, for helping me this term. Steve Chandler, President. Girls ' Glee Club Listen ' . Who ' s singing? Hurry! It ' s the Girls ' Glee! We love to sing together and give programs for others. It has been fun taking part in the festivals and concerts with the other schools. Our arranger and director, in fact the mainstay of the Glee Club, is Miss Bonney. Each semester the girls elect a president. Last fall May Hessing presided and this year Seeley Dole was president. She played some lovely flute obligatos for us. Patsy Kennedy and Betsy Cannon were the other officers. Where there ' s music in the air, Like a joyful, carefree song, And you hear it everywhere, You are happy all day long. Frances Clark. 16 Willard Orchestra Ik This year Willard has its usual excellent but larger orchestra. We played for the P.-T.A. in October and for the February graduation. Other appearances were at the Northern California festival competition in San Francisco, the annual Spring Concert and the June graduation. Small goups of orchestra members were active in public performances, as a trio or soloists, and many are members of the Berkeley Schools orchestras. It truly has been a wonderful year with an expert con- ductor, Mr. Caldwell. Seeley Dole. Willard Band At the beginning of last semester, our band started practicing marching for a Halloween Parade at Le- Conte elementary school, which was very successful. After this we started practicing for a parade which was to be held in Oakland on Armistice Day. Although it was raining that day, our band was not discouraged and we played in the bus in which we were to go to the parade. This news actually reached newspapers in New York which stated Band Plays in Bus. It was printed below a picture of our band playing in the bus. Since that time we rehearsed a march, Com- mander, the Slavonic Folk Suite and the overture, Mandalay for a competition in which many orches- tras and bands from different parts of California played on April 30 at the San Francisco Junior College. Charles Bean. 17 Rally Committee Girls ' League The Rally Committee this past year has had a very successful year. Its purpose is to promote real school spirit and I think we have accomplished this very well. The Rally Committee is made up of students having good grades in both citizenship and scholarship. The Rally Committee this past year has put on two very successful night dances, quite a few noon dances, and ushered for the Sports Carnival in March. The members of the Rally Committee would like to thank Mr. McClellan, our principal. Miss Blumert, our art teacher, and Mr. Isono, our sponsor, for their won- deful help and cooperation. Katie Solari, Steve Chandler. The Girls ' League has just ended another successful semester with the help of Miss Parent, our advisor. Our noon dances were well attended and our big barn dance, Superstitition Frolic, was an unusual success. The motto of the Girls ' League which is To Pro- mote Friendship and Leadership Among the Girls was given enthusiastic support by the girls. I would like to thank all who have contributed in making my term as president a very pleasant and suc- cessful one which I shall never forget. Lexore Uyeyama, President. Katie Solari, Vice President. Florence Cooper, Secretary. 18 Girls ' Sports Despite the most commonly known fact that we tried hard, terrifically hard, the H-9 girls ' basketball game results never announced a victory, and ditto for the L-9 and H-8. But hurray for the L-8 — they came through with a tie! Baseball was fine, too. (Did I say too ?) I ' m happy to say that a good number of awards in the form of diamond, circle, and block Ws were given out. And thanks! Thanks to everyone for giving me the exciting experience of serving you as Girls ' Athletic Manager, and to Miss Parent and Mrs. Beeken, especially, for their help. Here ' s wishing an enthusiastic athletic program for Willard. It was fun, and thanks again. Janet Suzuki, Manager. Boys ' Sports Willard started off the sport season with a great bang, winning three out of four cham- pionships in volleyball, L-8, H-8, L-9. But we slowed up a little in basketball. Although the unlimited team looked very good they finished a strong second, led by David Garth, Steve Chandler, Pat Coll, and Victor Elischer. Burbank was first and Garfield third. This was the first time in ten years we failed to win a basketball championship. Softball and baseball are off to a good start. We have five baseball and two softball groups. All boys interested in track are looking forward to a wonderful Spring Day meet on May 20. Solomon Wheat, Athletic Manager. Block W Club ' Membership in the Block W Club is attained by earning points through the athletic program at Willard. This requires an outstanding effort on the part of the individual. The athletic points are accumulated from the seventh grade through the ninth grade. At present there are about 3 5 boys and girls in the Block W Club. The members of the Block W Club have the privilege of sponsoring the annual Bean Feed, ushering at the Sports Carnival, and formulating policy matters for the athletic program. We all hope that next year ' s members will have just as much fun as we had working under the supervision of Mr. Berry. John Roper.
